Was enjoying playing through the new Romulan content, logged off to make some dinner, half an hour later I came back and logged in to find this

Yeah, the launch of LoR is pretty bad.  Fairly evident they grossly underestimated the number of players coming in.  They're losing a lot of new customers due to this for sure.

It's a shame.  The new content is rather well done.

This is not necessarily a bad thing. It means that the interest in game is bigger than they estimated. World won;t die if i can;t log in 2 days. Looking forward to see even more captains in space .

True, yet it also means lost revenue for them if potential new customers aren't able to log in and make purchases in the store.

Not only that, but it also means they were not prepared for the initial surge of players. They could have seen this given Neverwinters soft launch. STO's servers always blow up and have disconnect issues any time Cryptic updates the game. One would think adding extra hardware for these types of updates would be an after thought instead of a "whoops, we done goofed" moment.

I agree with you. To be fair, I'm sure it's difficult, if outright impossible, for Cryptic to guesstimate how much new traffic these releases will bring in. As you suggested, it would be wise for them to have additional server resources ready for this. These server crashes (across all their games) are a common occurrence with Cryptic. At least to me, they seem to get worse every release.

Shame because the LoR expansion adds a lot of great content to the game. They're losing sales because of these queues for sure.

Yeah, what you said sums it up pretty well for me. I suppose it is somewhat unrealistic to expect a company to be totally prepared for the rush of traffic that hits their servers. I just would have thought these problems would have been lessened a bit over time. But you are correct from how I see things. This does result in many lost sales.

I very much enjoy the UI revamp, the new content for the Rommies even though the mission structures are "same-ish". I don't expect Cryptic to re-invent the wheel as far as mission variety goes, but the content I have played so far makes me want to go on to the next mission to see what happens next.

I got one of my new Rommy Bridge officers to look like Kasumi from Mass Effect 2. Got the hood and stuff going on for her. I like that sort of stuff. All in all, its a decent update, that's for sure. If it makes me want to actually buy anything from the store like ships or other things, well, not so far.

Were I Cryptic, I would have  a server (or perhaps a few) ready to go when releases are launched.  They can use them on an as needed basis until the traffic levels off, then re-purpose them later if need be.  We did something similar with our production web servers here and it's saved us a lot of headaches.

From what I've seen, Cryptic won't ever be able to launch big updates for their titles simultaneously.  NW open BETA nearly took STO and CO down, and the LoR update was causing issues in NW and CO.

It has more to do with the account server and the game server set up, then anything else. The bootleneck is the account server . Although the game server does have it's limitation they aren't nearly as bad as the account server.

as of May 28, still issues bringing the servers down, long queues occasionally, etc.  They're working on it, but if you're considering playing STO, might want to give it a couple weeks to iron out the wrinkles.

The good news is the new Romulan Republic "faction" seems fun to play.  There's an engaging, if pretty linear, storyline, eventually opening up around level 10, I think it was, allowing access to other unrelated story arcs running parallel to the driving one.

More pixels next time plz, some of us got reading-glasses eyes.

Oh, "stuck in queue" grumble.

Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.

Oh yeah, its nasty.

If your lucky, you might be able to log on and enjoy yourself for a few hours. I estimate this game is only up 18 hours per day ever since the release of Never Winter Online beta and their new STO expansion.

<imo> one of the worse launches this year. I know there trying their best, but their best just simply sucks.

I feel sorry some of the players out there, since STO isn't localized, I wonder which country of players are feeling the pain more than others that wish to play this game.

STO is online for 23 hours a day and it goes down for an hour or so even though down time says 2 hours.

Unless your day consists only of 20 hours. But then people like me who have been gaming for ages know how thing goes every time major content is launched in any MMO.

The queue traffic seems pretty severe. I wonder if it's for all the PWI stuff in NA or just Cryptic's ? If it's just Cryptic then they need to spend the cash and upgrade the account server or the program, this is ridiculous.

I keep reading about Qing issues; I JUST created and account two weeks ago, and have had zero troubles zoning in. It's strange, I guess I could consider myself lucky, but maybe it is a region thing.

Also, 2nd vote for awesome thread title :)

Haven't actually had to que again since I started this thread. That night it took over an hour and a half to get back in...... But that is mostly because I got stuck in the kettle! BOOM!...................Ummmm?..............I think I need some new material, but seriously are people still having trouble with this?  STO's population has seemed to be quiet healthy since the F2P transition but if people stick around after the new expac's crapy launch and still still want to play it can only be good for the game. STO is never my main game but it is a guilty pleasure that I pick up and play every few months and It would be nice to see it do well, personal feelings about PW and Cryptic aside.  Would have liked to see a new level cap but guess there is not much further you can go after Admiral. Super Grand Poobah of all space? ;)

Let me just say after today's Thursday so called patch, some of the game basic features are broken once again.

Does Cryptic even know how to fix the real problems instead of making new ones? (PVE ques are jacked and now even give random letters in the que list, let alone boot you out once your in, you cannot mine for some reason today, some of the STF are borked without dropping rewards, mail system is in shambles and customer support is even beyond bad, it sucks).

So many good things in LoR, however if you cannot play it, what good is it and this has been going on since release.
