DC Universe Online News - Chris Cao Video Interview

Posted by Michael Bitton on Oct 26, 2009  | 7 comments in our forums

DCUO Source, a fansite for DC Universe Online, recently visited SOE Austin for a studio tour and got a chance to sit down for a four-part interview series with DCUO Creative Director Chris Cao. In the interview, Chris Cao answers a number of questions straight from the DCUO Source community.

In the interview Chris discusses the role of feedback in the game's development, including the process for reviewing it and implementing changes made due to feedback in the game.

Another topic that was brought up is the possibility for hero or villain exclusive costume pieces, as it has been mentioned previously that there would be origin restricted costume pieces in the game. Chris didn't feel the former was appropriate, but got very much behind their idea for origin restricted pieces. Players will have a large array of general costume pieces to choose from, but the game will also reward players with costume pieces fitting of their specific origin. The idea behind this is to help differentiate players from one another.

Also, a question on everyone's minds, especially those who have played Batman: Arkham Asylum: Will Kevin Conroy voice Batman in DCUO? To that, Chris Cao was pretty coy and only answered that the team is really trying to leverage the DC Universe license in the best way possible.

Finally, Cao was asked about the role of secret identities., And again, like the Kevin Conroy question, he wasn't really able to answer, for fear of being sniped by hitmen hired by the marketing folks. Chris would only say that secret identities would serve an important role and that fans should "be prepared."

you never watched Teen Titans did you?

And they did say they were cherry picking for all the DC media so it IS a valid point.

Brother Blood in the comics was not a cyborg, from what I have seen the game is going to be more comic based then animated show based.

Brother Blood was a worshiper of Trigon, Raven's Dad and cult leader. First one TItans encountered was like number 8 in the line. The first one killed a priest for what thought was the burial shrowed of Christ. It granted him Invulnerability and what. The original was cursed though that the men of his family would live 100 years and then be killed by their son. and So on and so forth. This happened up to modern day. There is also a new Brother Blood who is a Vampire and leading the cult of Blood currently.

ok i'll give another example. My point is i hate being forced to "look" like my orgin. There are plenty of heroes and villians that mix themes.

Dr. Doom - a master of mysticism...

but uses robots and power armor

Tigra: Magical champion of the Cat People

looks like Chetah

Cpatial Marvel (DC)

he looks more like a fighter pilot from the 50s' but is a magical hero.

The idea all mages are going to be Stragefate and Talia knock offs just rubs me the wrong way.

I'm not saying that technology and sorcery can't co-exist... I never said that I was just doing a correction on brother blood :), not a cyborg via comics, I am aware of Captain Marvel, even though not technology but still the big red cheese isn't no Dr. Fate either. Also Dr. Doom does use technology with his mystic abilities, and it was stated once that sometimes his technology limits his magical abilities depending on the comic boork writer. But you can have technology and magic, never said you couldn't :P The ancient Atlantians are a prime example of magic and technology, even Aquaman had a magic hand for a while pretty much.

Wow, that was wholly unnecessary.

Besides, he's lead the development of several of the best and most successful MMO's so far.
