It looks like it could be pretty good.  And if it's not, then it will probably blow up spectacularly and be a complete train wreck.  (You can drive entire species of mobs into extinction?  Really?)  And better yet, if the game is a train wreck, then the precise way in which it self-destructs is highly unpredictable.  And that's also interesting, albeit in a different way.

Having not played the game, I'd put the odds at 1/3 that it ends up being pretty good and 2/3 that it ends up being a disaster.  But I'll at least give Ankama credit for trying some things that are different, rather than making yet another WoW clone.  Because a 1/3 chance of being pretty good sure beats a 100% chance of mediocrity.

I tried this one recently, hoping it would be the sandbox I was looking for. It's actually very, very much like another game (Dofus?)

I quite liked the concept of it, and it was mildly fun whilst I played it. I actually quit before I'd had the chance to make my judgement, simply due to the fact that I upgraded to a new laptop and lost the install.

Graphically I was underwhelmed, and I'm personally not a fan of the anime artstyle. Still, I would never base my decision about a game solely on its art-style.

/goes to install to give it a real shot.

Tried it during EU beta, was definitely interesting.

Combat felt a little slow/dull (although in all fairness, I later discovered that I'd chosen one of the classes with the least variety). The sheer variety of crafting and gathering was also great, although it suffered from the flaw of making you craft lots of stuff that was rarely any better than the loot drops everyone got anyway. But the freedom to aggressively pursue it (outside of normal combat) was nice.

Got my sights on tera for the short-term, but I haven't uninstalled this game yet. At the very least, looks to be a refreshing change from the majority these days. Hope it does well.

That the means of progression would not be mutually exclusive from the means of enjoyment.
