Weird too as you can mix and match parts, you'd have no idea what tank you were up against :P.

For my tank fix I do Red Orchestra now.  It's has big tank maps (some that require minutes of driving let alone > 2KM gun ranges) and combined arms if you want.  Smaller playerbase as it's old but it's cheap and one time only (no monthly).  Darkest hour mod (free) seems the most populated nowdays for tanks as it has Americian tanks.  Doesn't have WWIIOL damage model unfortunately, but Darkest Hour as a LOT of folks on mics for comms in tank maps, almost intimidating some of the tactical requirements heh.

Red Orchestra is damn good I agree. But there're more good games in the world

 I'm in the Russian Beta for World of Tanks, and I have to say it is fun!!! It is NOT the same as WW2online, but...did I mention it's fun???

I've been playing WW2online since it opened in 2001 off and on...right now off.....mostly because I play tanks....only tanks....once they started to seriously limit the availability of these vehicles I quit. I LOVE WW2online.....and I'd come back...but only if the equipment availablilty was fixed. It wasn't realistic maybe with the amount of armor to infantry...but it was FUN!!! I'm wondering if they would consider having a map that was an entire Tank/Air/ATG gun game. No infantry at all. That would be a blast.

  But anyway...back to World of Tanks....I'll post updates from time to time, or answer questions that don't violate their NDA (which isn't real strict by the way)....so...ask questions if you like, if not...don't write this game off yet...way too early!! Besides, we all need to take out a little "tank agression" on others from time to time :).

Wow of the most frustrating part of the WWII Online game.  Equipment availability in WWII Online is the most serious problem.  Ever since they removed the players ability to determine the make up of units you no longer have a feel of a wargame.  Units that would have been removed from service because they are outdated or obsolete in 1939 are still in the game when 1942 weapon sets are in the game and you cant find any of the new stuff.  In the air new players are left flying crap planes against vets in top of the line fighters.  You find yourself having to jump all over the map and even having to drive a unit for hours to get to the front with a decent tank or airplane.  If you make a small mistake and lose that vehicle to combat you are finished player for another hour to bring another one up or face 1943 tanks in a 1936 model.  It is complete ludicrousy.

In real Generals raced to replace their units old equipment with new front line battle gear to fight better and win the war.  The dev team at CRS has turned a perfectly wonderful wargame into a shoot em up sim by taking the improvement factor in battle units out of the game.  Instead of putting in realistic cycles where units slowly upgrade to better units and allowing for a mismatch of a full Tiger battallion going against a weaker French battalion that has not fully upgraded they have taken all that out of the game with even steven everything in the game and has completely lost any resemblance to a real wargame anymore.

Unfortunately this World of Tanks game lacks all the other aspects of a Wargame and is just a tank shootem.  I suppose there will never be areal wargame on the net.  Sad too.

 Just an FYI, there are free keys to try the beta of this game on the home page. There still is only one form of gameplay, and that's the "random" battles similar to the "blitz" in navy field. But, the game is fun......it's free, so download a key and give it a try!!!
