Honorable mention goes out to World War II Online who hilariously launched a World War II MMO with planes that couldn’t fly.

That was the comment on the MMORPG article about the 5 worst launchs of a MMO game.  I was there for the launch and basically it was awful the first three days but after that not really bad.  It was just a badly finished game if you want to call it finished.  It basically is still not finished 8 years later.  But I do not think the planes that would not fly is a true account.

Anybody?

I can't remember that specifically, but I know for certain that the tanks would just start levitating straight up in the air every so often. I watched that happen many times. Heck, I still have the original box from the month it launched (the game, not the tanks).

Asheron's Call. The one open world, classless progression, live team content oriented game that ALL game sites and developers show little respect for as a template to pattern future MMOs after.

Yes it is True I was there when the game launched and NO the planes didnt work.  Now I dont think this game was a failed launch though.

Oh yah the flying tanks...  I will allways remember the time a buddie and I took seats in a tank crew (I was the gunner)  and a tank I had a dead bead on shot straight up in the air.  That was fun.

I don't know how you could possibly think it was anything but a failed launch. After the first week, they put it back into what amounted as a virtual open beta status, and they gave everybody that had purchased it 6 months free access.

I don't recall the airplane issue myself, but I wasn't able to log in during the first four days because of their network issues (anyone remember the so-called "phat pipes" that they were bragging about right before launch?) and it must have been corrected during that time. I can remember Stukas bombing the crap out of us and no way for the Allies to respond because we didn't have a bomber of our own yet. Large tracts of land that didn't have the vegetation placed on them yet. Radio tables that wouldn't spawn no matter what you did. And, instead of the one server they had promised, they had to make a number of them because they couldn't put more than a thousand or so people on one server without it crashing.

Oh yeah, it was a failed launch.

That said, I do enjoy the game now more than ever.

Im glad they gave this honorbale mention after i called them out on this.  It was one of the worst launches ever up there with AO.  It wasnt just non flying planes, it was the inability to access the game at all for the majority of the first week and the frequent disconnects and the inability to actually meet up with anyone in game in the following days.

well I did not have trouble meeting up with people in the follow days during US prime time there were plenty and the world was really small.  The frequent disconnects is still around.  I loathed the old 20 min to load the game trick though, glad it is gone.  The problem now is the game devs think everyone wants to be in the same place so they put player concentration mechanics in and turned the game into a zerg fest quite often.  Now they are working on visuals for the past year of dev which unfortunately will not be enough and the game will quickly become old without new stuff imho.  Stuff like ragdoll and that will be fun for 20 min then will become ordinary but it should be better than infantry dead standing up or at odd angles which is a wierd thing killing immersion.

The game can be fun in groups.  There just needs to be more tactical depth than slugfestsonline.  There are so many of those Planetcide games.  This one does not need to turn into.  Though it is what people pay for in the other zerg games.

RAF flight about to take off on a fighter sweep.  So flying now is no problem (Scroll right to see all the flight)

I was there on launch day and it was most certainly an honorable mention in crap launches. CTD's up the butt, ultra choppy, planes, tanks and men skipping accross teh field with lag. Hell! How many months into the game until we realized that German machine guns were shooting backwards?

You're correct though, the planes did fly. On day 1 I took a stuka out and got shot down by a hurricane over Namur.

Lots of problems day one for me I can't even think of them all but that being said this was one of the most fun games I have ever played.

How about the french rifle when it would sway from side to side. You had to time the sway to get your target.  I don't think that was a launch problem though I think it happened later on.
