  • Perfect World Snaps Up Cryptic Studios

    Gamasutra is reporting that Chinese publisher Perfect World Entertainment has snapped up Cryptic Studios. Cryptic was recently put on the market by Atari and is the development studio responsible for Champions Online and Star Trek Online. PWE acquired 100% equity in Cryptic for $50.3 million.

  • Atari Divests Itself of Cryptic Studios

    According to an earnings statement released by Atari, the company has divested itself of Champions Online developer, Cryptic Studios. The move became effective on March 31st. According to Gamasutra, Atari will continue its support of Champions Online and Star Trek Online until such time as the studio is sold.

  • Lifetime Subscriptions Reinstated

    Cryptic Studios has announced that lifetime subscriptions to Champions Online have returned. For $299, players will never have to pay a subscription again and will be considered 'Gold Members' (top tier) when the game goes free to play in January 2011. In addition to the gold membership, players are treated to several other perks.

  • Archetype Details Emerge

    When the free-to-play iteration of Champions Online goes live in January, one of the new features to be introduced is the Archetype system. Basically, an archetype is a ready-made hero with pre-defined build. Players will know ahead of time what will happen as their characters level, what skills will be learned, what role this archetype is best suited to play, etc.
