The NDA for Champions Online has officially dropped, according to a post by Community Manager Daeke on the official Champions Online forums. Like he says there, you may now talk about the game until you're blue in the face!

Also, remember Open Beta begins today at 10AM PDT. For the full Official Open Beta schedule, go here.
They must have just posted that because I just got done looking for word about the NDA lol...
Okay then - how does the cash shop work?
What is end game like?
Now we can hear all the crap about the game
Be prepared!
1) You give them moeny and they give you stuff.
2) Big sign, GAME OVER - THANK YOU FOR PLAYING?
With the NDA removed, we can all tell you now how badly this game sucks...
It sucks very badly!
Cash Shop wasn't online during the latter half of the beta when I was on. The endgame is essentially Arena PvP and UNITY missions - a daily misson arc for special credits for buying restricted equipment and unlocks.
QFT. Infact this imo after all the years of handling COH and developing it, they have learned absolutleuy fuuck all, except to make the customistaion screen the startgame, midldegame and endgame. They added a few dailies at endgame and UFC cage fiths. Personally I think cryptic have lost the plot big time.
This means exactly *nothing* without any sort of detail added.
I think WoW 'sucks very badly', but 10 million people seem to disagree with me.
what does the CO online NDA being dropped have to do with wow?
*eeyes glowing as i rise from the floor*
The chains have be broken!

well seriously, what questions do you have, ask away!
Postal13's One Senence Summation is as utterly worthless as my One Sentence Summation. I just went a step further and pointed out that 10 million people disagree with my One Sentence Summation.
Unless Postal13 coughs up 4 or 5 paragraphs describing WHY he or she thinks that Champions Online 'sucks very badly', I'll take their opinion for the merit that it has - which is 'none whatsoever'.
Have you played Cryptic's 'other Hero title' at any length, and if so, how would you compare and contrast the two?
Ok, how about this -
With such an incredibly diverse variety of skills and appearance, and the ability to create a character that is far beyond unique, one would think that this would be a fantastic game. That is until you login and realize that the UI is lackluster, the small number quests are incredibly dull, levelling up consists of only increasing stat points and also you find yourself fighting the exact same thing over and over and over again.
All in all, I have to say "I certainly hope that Star Trek Online will be better than this, or they surely would face The Wrath Of....."
i only played The other Game for 63 months so i'm not to experienced....
Theirs a big style difference betweeen the two and while CoH/V tutorial is stale i kep find some other little quest in CO i didnt find before, its ile a 1-6 zone on it's own!
Oh and you can rescue Foxbat, which a bit tounge in cheek with him calling (in voice over) for the devs to change his spawn point.
After that you get 2 choices for starter zones The Desert or Canada which each have a "mini crisys" you have to solve to load into the "proper" world so it feel like you are making a difference.
Also
animated tails
This game is nowhere near finished. I would kill a mob, its health bar is down to zero, and "attack animation" is still going on. The baddid is standing there .. erm . . dead, and my toon wont stop attacking . .lol. After several cases like this, I stopped playing. uninstalled. That was last week, they may have fixed it since then.
The game is quit fun actually. Sure it isn't much different than other MMO's quest or combatwise. But it's a nice change having all the customization (4 different areas where you can shoot powers from and changing the color) and I personally think it's better than CoX.
As for people saying the UI is bad, it's actually better because it's smaller and more compact compared to other MMOs that have 1/4 of your screen covered with unnecessary crap (See WAR).
And you people need to realize that "you kill the same stuff over and over again" is what you do in EVERY MMO. Come up with a less than idiotic excuse please.
Exactly, STO has got to be better.
CO had some very neat ideas. The cell shading was not among them however. I absolutely detested that and was thrilled when I finally got a dev respond to my request and tell me the command line to turn that off. Then the graphics actually became breathtaking. It's like Cryptic had a really sharp/crisp game and then scribbled with a crayon on it.
Anyways, I still could have dealt with the look if the gameplay had been fulfilling. It wasn't. You have to use an endurance building power over and over until it builds up enough of a bar for you to fire off a bigger attack. This translates to a lot of 1-1-1-1-1-2 style of number-mashing. Oh and occasionally, a 1-1-1-1-3! Essentially, Champs is a MMO designed for the console and you have no choice but to feel that.
Some may enjoy that. I did not. Take it as you will.
Hrmmm, I would say that CO allows more customization of your character. However, you have to be carefull when playing with the custom sets or selecting powers outside of your main power set. It is hard to balance those powers and abilities that do not belong to the same power set. It can be done but, it is not easy and requires some serious trial and error and research before getting into it.
However, changing your power colors and ( to some effect ) where those powers eminate from your character is top notch. Having crafting play a major role in your character is another think CO does well.
With CO being more stat based, it gives you a better feel for what drops and crafted items you need to enhance your character. More than the C0X series. I find myself selling less and crafting more.
The zones are way larger and so far that I have experienced, relies less on instancing than CoX. Although in some cases it does promote a lot of camping certiain areas and quests ( not a big fan of that ). While some argue against this there is the caveat that you tend to interact with the other players in the area to form groups so you do not have to fight over things. EQ was known for that as well and a lot of people hated this and some swore thats how they made friends. So, take it either way.
Travel powers are waaay cooler and you get them quick.
Being able to experiment with the powers you take prior to being stuck with them is awesome.
No servers, no having to coordinate where your group plays. Only 1 server to log into and instances of each area that have your guild mate, friend, and team mates tracking. Being able to change instances at any time by clicking on the map. Great idea IMO. Do not see why anyone could not like that.
I've been playing CO off and on since Oct of 2008. Initially I was very excited about the game and I spent a good chunk of time browsing the character creator and coming up with "dream" heroes and look-a-likes.
I have always found the gameplay to be horribly repetitve and lackluster. In Champions Online you have an endurance building power that you choose at level 1 and will continue to use ad nauseum. You have to build endurance to be able to use your other powers.
This may not seem that bad at first, but once you spend any length of time with the game you start to really despise the chosen mechanics. For almost a year testers spoke out about how horribly unfun the combat mechanics were. Testers discussed the ins and outs of how it pretty much robbed the game of any depth insofar as strategy and teamwork were concerned.
This ended up being the most frustrating aspect of this game to me. I still can't believe that in the face of all the continuous negative feedback they still pressed on with the chosen combat mechanics. As far as combat is concerned City of Heroes/Villains is much more fun and infinitely more engaging.
Remember power suppression from the CoX games? It's back and it's just as annoying and fun crushing as it ever was. This time around our good friends at Cryptic chose to give NPCs the ability to hit you with an ability that will not only suppress your travel power, but turn it off completely, forcing you to charge it back up again. For those of you who are unfamiliar with how the travel powers work, they are not toggle on/off. Instead you hold down the key binded to your travel power and watch a bar fill up before it is fully functional.
On to character building:
Much like the City of games before it, Champions Online falls prey to an overly restrictive and cumbersome system with which to build your character. Anyone who played the City of Games can attest to the frustration that every decent build pretty much required the player to choose Endurance for the regen.
Champions Online brings with it, a whole new world of frustration as all powers are gated. Meaning that you must first purchase other powers in that same "set/category" for the other powers to become unlocked and therefore available for selection to be incoporated into the player's build.
However, all powers become unlocked eventually at certain milestone levels.
When you factor in all of the stats, super stats, and oceans of forgettable stat enhancing items that smother the player with numbers and terms that are not only unfamiliar, but make character itemization one of the most cumbersome aspects of the game, the overall fun factor of the game drops infinitely.
As if all that wasn't enough to ensure the mediocrity of this game, Cryptic opted to lock costume accessories and parts from their regular subscribers. So not only will you be paying a monthly fee, but you will also be paying extra for cash shop items. Granted the only cash shop items that you can't unlock in-game are costume pieces, but you will be able to purchase other items that can be unlock in-game in their cash shop.
If I missed any aspect about the game that you want to know about, feel free to ask here or PM me.
Hope you enjoyed the read.
I have beta tested so many games I am starting to lose track but lets try
Ultima Online
Everquest
Planetside
Anarchy Online
Age of Camelot
Everquest 2
Earth & Beyond
Star Wars Galaxies
City of Heroes & City of Villains
Matrix Online
Tabula Rasa
Age of Conan
Warhammer Online
And of course, Champions Online.
CO is the ONLY beta I ever quit. No matter how bad the game was I always stuck with it. Testing everything I could think of and filing endless bug reports.
The idea was no matter how bad the beta was I thought maybe I could help them find the problems and fix them.
This was not true with Champions Online, They gave NO indication they were listening to beta testers at all.
So I was left testing one of the most boring and ugly games I have ever played. And just to make things worse, this is the ONLY beta I have ever been in that had such tiny beta windows. For gods sake the week before they went into open beta they had 2 partial day betas and that's it.
The amount of grinding in this game is staggering, the quests are almost all of the go kill X number of Y of collect x number of Y. And instancing? Almost unheard of.
Throw in almost no reason whatsoever to group. (No instances, almost no boss mobs that you need to kill) And you find yourself soloing through almost the whole game.
Add to this the massive PvP balance issues. (Don't even THINK about melee if you want to PvP), the massive need for clearer indications of what powers do and what is needed for what. (I.E. You MUST get a passive power, defense or offense but they never even indicate this)
Long story short, this is a boring, ugly, solo-heavy, broken PvP, with a item store game. They would have to pay me to get me to play it. No way in heck am I paying them.
I am very very deeply worried about Star Trek Online now.
Despite being a game set within the super hero genre, a genre in which you can pull off just about any idea and have it work, this game is surprisingly unimaginative and dull. I'm a person who is easily captivated by new games, it generally takes me more time than most to figure out whether or not a game sucks, but I was bored within the first hour or two of playing Champions Online. This is a bad thing.
What's even worse is that I'm a huge dork for super hero games; I played City of Heroes/Villains for 4+ years even though it was incredibly repetitive. I will make tons of excuses for super hero games, and forgive flaws that I would severely criticize in other genres, but despite my leniency I still found Champions Online to be completely lackluster.
I'm very sad that I don't find Champions Online to be fun, but I'm just bored to tears by it. Hopefully DC Universe Online will be better.
People wonder why people stay away from MMORPG. Its due to the number of idiots on this site who just slam a game when nothing is wrong with it.
Some folks have been waiting with bated breath for the NDA to be lifted in order to share their experience. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. If you have a different opinion, go ahead and give it voice. I'm with the doomsayers on this and I got into beta in early March.
Solid game if you like super heroes games , i think it bring the super hero to a new level .
My only negative comment and it's a big one , when you level up there not much to your character customisation beside adding new powers .
But overall it's a fun game i really liked the enviroments and i actuallly felt like i was in a comic book .
have fun
What a well thought out and poignantly written response to the criticism this game has garnered. What a sharp whit you seem to possess.
I am humbled by your insight and am left to ponder the error of my ways.
There was a time in the beta in which I did not enjoy it either. I found the game to be rather boring and just did not make any sense.
Then one day I had the A-HA moment. I dunno what it was, I found the right character to play. The right power set? I dunno, I just noticed that the stats worked this way, crafting was that way, powers were this way and WOW! OK, I get it !!!! This is pretty kewl.
The issue as I see it is the game is very easy to pick up and run with it at the lower levels. However, it is like playing most of the MMO quests. They do not take time to read the quest and just go through clickin on every quest giver to get the quest. Then they go back and gloss over the text to find out what X they need to kill to get Y and return to Z. Not paying attention to the stats and the powers and what they offer can seriously take the fun out of the game.
Now, is this what happened to everyone who is posting negative information about the game? NO. Some people DO NOT LIKE THE GAME. More power to you. I do not want to get rid of your posts. It gives players with like minds some thing to digest before investing time and money in the game.
I am saying that I enjoy the game and the quirkiness in the quests. Are they much different from other MMO? Not really. They do have the public quests and stuff.
I like the no server idea and the fact that there are huge intances ( similar to AoC and CoX ) but, this allows them to have a "server/shard" -less environment ( unlike CoX and AoC ). So you do not have to worry that your friend creating X on server Y. He will be in an instance in the game. Add his name to your friends list and you will know which instance he is on.
I like the variations in powers and where they emulate from. I like the various selections on powers, the ability to select powers outside of my power set.
I like the Cel Shaded animations and though there are some tweaks needed the power animations as well.
I like that crafting can actually have an affect on your character at a low level and is not something you have to focus on but, can do alongside of everyday questing and not feel like it is being neglected. The stats mean something and every little point you can get is used to its utmost to squese every last benefit out of your power set.
I like that powers have secondary effects and other modifications you can apply to them. This completely changes the aspect of the character in the game.
I like the IDEA of roles. Allowing you to have different builds for different roles you want to play, offensive, defensive, utility... This is the next aspect of the game I want to really flesh out. Not just build a role and go, meh.
I love Super Hero games, I was really really looking forward to CO. But I'm sorry they fell down on this one.
My issues are.
1. You do not feel super.
No I am not saying the game is too hard, I am saying they missed on the look and feel of super powered people fighting each other. When it takes 7-8 charged up hits from my main attack to kill what for all the world looks like a classic zombie out of any of a hundred zombie movies... I start wishing I had a shovel so I could one shot them like normal humans do in the movies.
2. It is ugly
I know, some people like the cell shading look. I am not one of them. This game is just plain ugly to me and all my guild mates who beta tested with me.
3. The missions are boring
I can not think of a single mission that wasn't some variant of go collect/kill X number of Y and come back. Even WoW has better missions.
4. The lack of instanced missions.
In almost every MMO I have played the main thing that made people group was going into a instance or if you are talking real old school just a dungeon.
4b. The lack of any reason to group.
I have never seen a MMO where there was so little grouping. Even with my guild beta testing with me, there was simply no reason to group up. So you solo... a LOT.
5. PvP is broke.
If you want to PvP you MUST be a blaster of some kind.
6. Item Mall.
I am happy to pay a monthly fee or pay for in game items. Not both. I know this doesn't bother some but it does bother me. So I vote with my money.
7. They ignored their beta testers.
If a developer ignores their beta testers you can be VERY sure they are going to ignore their players.
8. The game is confusing.
There is a lot of depth to the stats in this game. Too bad it is so badly documented. Until players step in and do the developers job for them and make wikis... New players are going to have a HUGE learning curve.
9. Tiny beta windows.
What does it say about a game that holds tiny beta windows? Every game I have ever beta tested was 24/7 beta for at least a couple months before open beta. These people never bothered to do that. Why? Because they do not value the feedback from the beta testers and are only interested in stress test data.
10. Servers have not been stress tested.
The server populations were always tiny, no surprise as the beta test windows tended to drive away most beta testers.
11. The developers do not have faith in their own product.
Offering life time deals before the game comes out and before people even have a chance to see the game is a BAD SIGN. This indicates they want to get as much money as quickly as they can. This has the feel of a company that knows the product is not going to do well. Look for a Boom as it comes out then a crash as everyone goes back to whatever games they came from.
I could forgive any 2 or 3 of these, but add them all together and you have a disaster just waiting to happen.
I really wanted this game to work, I really like the super hero genre and DC just does not look like my kind of game (Too consolish). But no matter how much I tried to make myself believe that I could grow to like it, or that I could overlook the problems... I still found I had to force myself to log in to beta test...
I am so disappointed.
Played CoH from beta until just about a year ago, and recently gave CO a try.
Here's my take from a weekend preview:
Character Customization: There are plenty of choices, but the interface is rather clunky. Every time I chose legs or footwear, it kicked me back to the head, chest, or full body section. It was a pain to keep clicking the body part to try something and then have it kick you back to another menu.
The way the customization handles is somewhat akin to CoH, but it's not as intuitive. For example, there are many items you can add individual colors / effects to, but the portion of the interface where you might notice this is ridiculously small.
Every item starts out with a locked color set; why can't you just unlock it once and be done with it?
Power Selection: As someone previously mentioned, you had better be careful when choosing powers. TAKE A RANGED ABILITY! If you don't, you will soon find that pure melee combat is idiotic, since every single creature in the game has a ranged attack (much like CoH).
Speaking of melee, that brings me around to targeting. Targeting is a pain, mainly because you can continue to target dead enemies. I suppose there is some mechanic or rationale for that, but I found it to be a pain in the butt when I continued beating on a dead opponent while a live one(s) bashed on me.
In CoH, I'm used to using target nearest; they have this option in CO, but it is not particularly useful when the target closest to you is dead.
Environment: They are.... ok. Small as all get out, though, like claustrophobic small. One of the great things about CoH was that most of the basic layouts were familiar; cities, sewers, building interiors. CO has some truly bizarre layouts from the beginning, so finding things was sometimes a bit of a pain.
Crafting: The crafting trainers were accessible early, and part of your initial game experience, and the system was pretty transparent. My personal take, however, is why have crafting at all? I'm not a big fan of the invention system in CoH and I can't honestly say that I think much of crafting in CO. I guess it's a time waster and some people find it enjoyable.
Combat: As someone else already mentioned, repetitive and boring. Before you get a travel power, you move so slowly that there is no real jumping / dodge / turn mechanic. From the outset of the fight, you're pretty much in a slugfest.
Couple that with the targeting system, and it's just no fun.
Then add in the build-up bang away with your primary power until you can use the others... ugh.
Honestly, combat is just slow and not all that impressive.
Grouping: Why? Didn't encounter a single situation where I needed to group in order to complete something.
Zones: There are multiple instances of the zones. I don't know why, I just know having to choose a zone instance every single time I zoned in somewhere was incredibly annoying. I was on a preview weekend, so perhaps they had limitations on the server / zone instances, but if they don't... ugh.
Did I mention they are really small?
Missions: Pretty much standard fare, although I had one mission at the beginning to gather gun parts and defend the gun against the bad guys (aliens, cant' remember their names).
For whatever reason, the mission kept starting over again. There was no warning, I just happened to notice that the timer had restarted and the mission goal had reverted back.
In CoH, you get giant text telling you "mission failed" "mission success" etc. The only time I really noticed something happening was when I leveled.... that was a pretty cool effect.
Usable items: It seemed like nearly every item you could equip was exactly the same, or minus one stat in favor of another. I kept trying to find a balance, but it seemed like the items for different slots just never complimented one another.
I can sort of understand that, at the beginning, because your character is pretty much a one or two-trick pony. I can only imagine that later on the items become more robust.
These are all initial impressions after just a weekend of game play, but that weekend was more than enough to convince me not to subscribe, even if I weren't already vehemently opposed to their sub / cash shop setup.
As far as I know mmorpg may be one of the biggest sites dedicated to mmo's and I certainly haven't heard of any massive campaign of folks warning others away from the site. Ok and these people are idiots because they don't have the same opinion of the game that you do?(Statements like this may be the real reason that people you seem to know stay away from mmorpg) I certainly wouldn't want to go to a site where I would be called an idiot simply because I didn't agree with you. Lastly lot's of people have stated quite eliquently what problems they have had with the game and you have done absolutely nothing but throw a temper tantrum because (why exactly are you acting an ass again?) who knows, but really most of the reviews have left me feeling that either the game is not good at all or ok if you have a different opinion then enlighten us with it instead of trying to bash people for expressing their own views of the game.
Oh yeah my question for those who did play the beta and actually have something to say about it was the nemesis system in place and if so how does that work?
Sorry it was not in place when I gave up on the beta.
Too bad too, I really wanted to check that out. It sounds like a great idea.
Thank you everyone for your time in reviewing CO.
It pretty clear where they want to take this venture. The holes the beta has will probably be filled much like CoX in reguards of short comings. Being a beta, there are features that have yet to be added such as Nemisis and such. That understood, I don't think CoX, DC or Marvel will have much to worry on this product. I feel they wanted to bring CoX to the console and this was the direction. So much so they lost a high profile IP (Marvel) in the process of cracking this egg. The boys at Cryptic want to cash in on the console possiblility but I don't think it will fair well against DC. I've watched the DC game in its alpha form and like what it brings to the table in its interface and action. Marvel probalby saw the writing on the wall with thier advisors and pulled out. It seems to me that Cryptic is just trying to break out into the console market where they feel this game will provide an alternative to the PC that kids can't access as well. IMHO.
This is not true.
The example given above is the *OLD* design of how Endurance Builders functioned. It was too spammy and made the game un-fun. Forgive me if I have the date wrong, but this was changed back around the beginning of May. The general opinion on this spamming playstyle (ie, repeatedly hitting 1 attack button a bazillion times to power up Endurance) was extremely negative by everyone using a keyboard and mouse.
The alternate style which was adopted has the Endurance Builders function as form of an Auto-Attack. EndBuilders do very little damage, can be given additional benefits as you advance, they only exist to build up your endurance and set up for more powerful attacks. A single depression of the "1" key activates the Endbuilder and you do not have to hit it again while you chose to use any other power - it continues firing at the mob until you turn it off or the mob is defeated.
(I have been playing Champions since March)

Lets not make it sound like they totally revamp the combat to make it more fun, like they should have.
All that changed was instead of pressing 1,1,1,1,1,1,1,2, you press 1 at the begining of every fight to toggle on your endurance builder and then watch and wait until you have enough endurance to use a power, then wait some more and repeat.
(Also, does it really matter how long you've been playing the game? Does that truely add more credence to your arguement or perception? I've been playing the game since Oct '08. It's doesn't mean my opinion is more right or that I know more about the game than someone else.)
IMHO 1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,2,1,1,1,1,1,1,2,1,1,1,1,12 Is ever so slightly better then 1,WAIT,2,WAIT,2,WAIT,2
Both are bad, but at least the first one has you doing something.
Errm... no. You have enough energy at the START of a fight to use some of your more 'super' powers straight away, before using your builder to power up some more. It was that way at least for the last couple of builds in closed beta. Didn't you notice that?
To be honest, with the latest changes in and spome spec in END or REGEN I find myself doing more 1-1-2( 1/4 hold )-1-<tab to next target> 3 ( hold to full power ) = 2 dead mobs
usually only hold the second or 3rd power to full charge when fighting the LT or more HP mobs. Lackeys rarely need more than a tap or two of the charging powers.
I find this no different than most MMO. Except you usually do a 5-4-2-1-3 and if the mob is not dead you wait until end builds. Some people are big fans of leaving the 1 key as an auto attack. I find it limiting and hard to time attacks with melee builds in game. With ranged attacks I generally leave the auto-spam buttin on.. However, the more I play the more I find that it really works good with some builds ( like Power Armor ) but not others ( Like Electricity ).
I cant speak about the latest changes. Seems in the last week or two they decided to do major revamps... right before open beta.
The main problem I have is that the whole game is.
1. Use end builder
2. Use main attack
3. On rare occasions use some 3rd attack
When I contrast that to almost any other game much less MMO it shows how limited the game play is.
My CoX blasters tend to have a quick low damage single target power, a slower higher damage power and a 3rd really high damage power.
Throw into that mix AoE powers and CC powers. This gives me the player a lot of control over the play style and flow of the game.
In WoW I have so many powers I run with 4-6 bars of buttons and use macros to get the exact control style I want for each toon.
Having said that both CoX and WoW allow people to play their games very simply or at very high levels of complexity.
CO... It just never gave me that feeling, it all felt so simple. You could almost feel the console controller in your hand, press X to build end, press B to attack. Press Y to dodge....
Shrug, once they get the console port out they have a much better chance of finding a audience. There at least people expect their games to have simple controls and have no expectations of being able to customize the UI.

lol It still translates to pressing 3 for the opener, pressing 1 to toggle endurance builder, wait, press 2, wait, press 2, wait extra long press 3.
The combat is exactly the same, but now you start the fight with enough endurance to use a different power once before you have to wait for more endurance. All they did was raise the equilibrium of your endurance bar. The mechanic itself is crippling in that it severely limits how and when you can use your abilities to the point that they can't make any kind of meaningful encounters because of it.
It translates to a very shallow game.
With the prices of games rising and the greedy in the eyes of the companies who not only want a full box fee, a monthly fee, but also lock content to be sold piece by piece to the poor smucks who all ready shelled out cash for the game and then the fee, you would think that games would offer more than they have in the past and not less.
This is sadly not the case.
The problem is that the majority of gamers are either too young to know the value of a dollar or are just have poor money managing skills. Companies have gotten away with the bare minimum for so long that it seems to have lowered the bar. It's bad enough to pay full price for a single player experience that doesn't last more than 5-6 hours, but it's even worse to shell out full price for a game AND a monthly fee for the current trend in MMORPGs.
They aren't even trying to add in player housing or any kind of virtual world. The MMORPG s dying a slow and agonizing death. I'm holding out for DCUO and/or Star Wars The Old Republic and if those games can't bring any lasting appeal that justifys charging a monthly fee, I'm going to go ahead and put the first nail in the coffin.
