I played the game when it was released , and i returned now.

I must say I am impressed. The game is much much better now.

Its easily comparable to City Of Heroes but with less instancing - and its free to play.

Actually I am enjoying it more than Rift.

And although I am getting tremendous value for free, i can see people wanting to plop $ easily (and do)

All in all. Another great value game. Making choice to subscribe to any MMO harder and harder.

Recomended !

I can second this, and raise my glass.  CO as a F2P is worth checking out and messing around with a.k.a, having fun.  I think the CoX team will have a hard time retaining players if they don't do something drastic with Issue 20 IMVHO.

Played it on release and left mainly due to lack of content and variety in content as well as the combat system not fitting right with the type of game. CO tries to be an action game but retains the standard RPG combat system. Essintially it's still a hotbar centric, auto attack, heat seeking, lock on targeting game. Don't get me wrong it's like they tried taking the combat fully in the right direction for this type of game, but it's like they gave up about a 1/4 of the way through.

The content though, there just wasn't a great deal to do and the variety in what there was to do was severely lacking. PvP was fun even if it was only instanced though.

Now...... on to todays CO. I checked it out again since it's F2P and I did love the char customization. But..... the game doesn't seem to have come very far. The game has seen a fair amount of content added, but it doesn't like a game thats been out for as long as CO has, for a game of it's age the content is still fairly lacking. Variety hasn't really improved either. Combat.... well combat is still in the same boat.

In the end you can definitely tell why the game went free to play. I'm sure some may like it so it even if it's just for the char customization. Never hurts to try it in any case since it's free. But it's definitely not everyones cup of tea.

Go in with low expectations and you may stick around longer than most tend to.

CoX and DCUO don't have anything to worry about from CO though thats for sure.

I understand your opinion but I disagree.

For one the combat is much faster paced than city of heroes.  Is it as fast as DCUO no, but to be honest that is kind of a good thing.  Let me explain.  I love DCUO, but i reached a point playing it on my laptop where I couldn't hang unless I bought a controller.  (kind of hard to turn on a dime and aim in that game with a touch pad).  That being said, DCUO has limited costume customization that CO surpases evern with just its free options.

For me CO is a good middle of the road between DC and CoX.  As far as its free to play option, I don't know that I have seen as much content availible without a sub.  Even Lotro which I have been known to champion in the past, reaches a point where if you don't like grinding your going to have to dish out the cash for some adventure packs.

CO only has two purchasable adventure packs right now and 1. they are unnecesary to complete the game's story and 2.  they scale to your level so they always remain viable.

The main trade off in playing it for free is of course having to play a preset class but to be honest at the rate they are adding classes to buy, you have a lot of options if you eventually buy cryptic points, but even without them the (is it 6) basic ones you start with are good enough to enjoy the game.

Before I started playing Rift full time I was having a blast in CO's F2P outing and I prob will keep playing it as a secondary MMO.  But had it not been for rift it would easily have become my primiary.

The influx of people has been really high and now there are plenty of people to do lairs with. Old SGs has been renewed with a lot of new and returning players. Also pvp has increased at least in the early tiers(I haven't tried the old ones).

No it doesnt, it has limited character creation customization. In game the costume customization is pretty crazy.

Im tired of hotbar global cooldown spam gameplay myself.

CoH, CO, DCU......................there are 2 MMO too many for this kind of subgenre

I honestly do not see the market for this kind of games.

OK, the first day spent on the character creation screen is fun, but after that I cannot see the attraction

I am not saying the game is not fun, but it is not fun in a MMORPG sort of  way, more as a single player sort of fun

To work as a MMORPG this genre has to be heavily PvP centered, with territorial conquests, world PvP, and Arenas/Battlegrounds.

PvE in this kind of games is just boring regardless who makes those games (the genre is not suited to PvE IMO).

Thats you dude. Not everyone want a game like this to be entirely on PVP. That would just suck in every way possible. But DC Universe online does have a PVP server. Beside the sword and axe shield genra has been boring for the longest how many was can you tell the same conflict over and over again. I mean it's the same in evry game, but hell atleast it's Scifi thiis go around. Maybe you can see the market for this type of game, because you're so closed minded. But some out there has.

If you want masses of avatar customisation and AT-less powers in a persistent open world you have CO.

If you want a fully featured traditional mmo experience in a comicbook form and mood you have CoH.

If You want a pacy action led experience based on contentious objectives (and pretty much the pvp you state is appropriate) and IP integrity DCUO is the one to pick.

There is actually far more justification and differentiation for these three games to exist than the plethora of generic fantasy clones we see as an alternative.

Let's be honest PvE doesn't suddenly work if you out an Elf and an Orc facing one another but fail otherwise; its really down to how the enemies and missions/quests are presented and structured. Its about how the gameworld reflects its theme and in this regard I think Champions' biggest issue is that lack of appropriate flavour, quests and enemies are very much the stuff of the generic fantasy game, they don't feel like intelligent villians or coordinated plans they are simply a precession of 'critters to cull' fundamentally there is no real understanding of the comicbook genre in the design of CO. By contrast CoH and more especially DCUO do actually go that extra mile to deliver a feel and style appropriate to the theme and that imo elevates the content and fun making it 'feel' very different from those hack and slash quests.

Why is there a F2P Q&A section of your forums but F2P players can't ask questions in it?

I just started playing this F2P as well and the questing side is pretty fun and of course the character creation, but the biggest problem I've had so far with the game is the pvp.  If you are the type that enjoys pvping as you level up you're going to notice right away that every single pvper will be using teleport as their travel power.  I'm told that at high levels it is more managable, but at the mid levels the pvp is an absolute joke in this game it is incredibly terrible.  Not sure why but teleport has no speed penalty like the other travel powers so you're literally gimping yourself to the point there is no reason to play unless you're using teleport.  So this leads to the pvp matches being all the people with teleport preying on the ones without(until they leave the match) and if everyone has teleport(or they're the only ones that have stuck around) the games just become super long, boring stalemates and it is incredibly stupid.  Not sure why Cryptic didn't notice this or if they've just decided to ignore pvp entirely, but its pretty awful and hard to miss.

I have to agree here in some extent here. I am not an strong pvper but I have noticed the teleport issue. The thing is that there is no easy solution, most solutions pass by gimping teleporters. I don't think they are neglecting the problem but that the solution is not straightforrward and they have more pressing matters.
