I seem to remember CO having "Canadian Wildnerness" or whatever and "the Desert" or whatever it's called... has the world been changed since the shift to free to play? I have a subscription and I know content was supposed to come with it... are there other areas to access in the CO world still?

pretty sure they are you just have to pick up the quest line that leads you to them.  I believe they are in the UNTIL HQ area.  the sub takes you to lemuria and the helicopt will take you somewhere else, name escapes me at the moment.

There's a helicopter just under the Jet outside Ren Centre now, that takes you to both the Canada Crisis and the Desert Crisis (when that becomes available to you). 

The Canada Crisis is available from first coming to MC, although you can bypass it and go straight to Canada via the Jet if you like. 

The Desert Crisis doesn't become availble till lvl 15 I think, and then the Desert becomes available as before.

All this AFAIK, but might be wrong.

there is also another questline to let you do the demon flame piece, though it doesnt scale to your lvl.  the other "expansions" they scale to your level and group size.
