DCUO will bring a lot of players when it's out, but it look like a bit silly and it also have one big problem. I look a little like the Hulk game.... didn't like that one at all.

The game is also stuck with DC Comics and can't just add new content. That might hurt the game later on.

That game will also have nerd rage if the Hero characters are different from the comics etc. See Star Wars games for same problem hehe.

DCUO have better graphics then CO, but CU have a special look that are closer to comics. I like Anime, so I have no problem with that.

CO will be "F2P" when DCUO comes out, if that will help I don't know.

The effect of DCU's release on CO will be utter annihilation. Even the bravest CO fanboi can't hope to stop it. CoH will survive as a F2P title though.

Playing: Diablo 3, Tribes Ascend, Skyrim

Disappointed by open beta feedback: GW2
Waiting for: TSW

there is one big thing that has made me realise how popular DCUO is and that is comments on threads about it.

So far out of all the news announcements i have seen on DCUO in the past 3=6 months there have been no more than 10 comments on it.  That is terrible considering FFXI still gets 20+ comments on each newspiece today and that most other MMO's can generate huge threads.

What that says to me is that people are not impressed by DCUO (yet) and (for me) it seems like it's only gonna get worse once released.  Yes it will take players from CO and CoX but it wont be the juggernaught of the Hero franchise and could possibly end up with a smaller population than CO (depends on how the gameplay pans out).

MMO wish list:

-Changeable worlds
-Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

CoX wasn't really direct competition due to the 2 games playing very different. Even then CO has struggled to make a big splash on the MMO scene. With DCUO potentially delivering a similar but different action packed setting what will happen to CO?

CoX delivers a more polished but slower paced game. DCUO is looking to deliver a more fast paced experience to rival CO, we will have to wait and see what level of polish it has or if it is a more robust game.

DCUO launch date  November 2010.

If I was a betting man I'd say it's going to put the final nail in that games coffin.  It is based on a more well known and in depth ip made by what some may consider to be a more competent developer with better access to resources.  but at the end of they day I just feel like any competition involving something made by Jack Emmert is bound to lose, this guy is like the glass joe of the mmorpg industry.

People are not impressed with DCUO because they haven't played it. I wasn't impressed with it either until I got to play it. The game absolutely rocks!

As far as what effect DCUO will have on CO, I have a feeling that all but the most devoted lifers will switch over to DCUO once it launches.

I guess people will switch, since it is the new thing. I think it is natural, even CO made people switch from other games. What it has to be seen is the retention after a few months. Actually I fear more Wow expansion effect than DCUO.

I think most people interested in DCUO will already have tried CO by then and will either be hooked on its avatar customisations or turned away by the total lack of variety and originality in every other aspect.

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

You guys are leaving out a HUGE leverage DCUO has over Champions.

The PS3.

DCUO may not be all that hot on this particular website, but imagine all the little kids who'll run into BestBuy or Blockbuster yelling at their parents for the cool new Batman game they see? Who cares if it has a sub, they still buy the game thinking its like Spiderman 3 or the Hulk.

Hey now lol DCUO is fairly popular even here lol. It's managed to stay on the hype meter unlike FFXIV ( I know it's launched now but a good while before it launched it dropped off the hype meter never to be seen again lol).

But most respected the NDA on DCUO... even I did :P. To much fun to risk das boot from the beta lol.

But yeah, PS3 is going to be a big boost to DCUO.

But its just one of numerous things DCUO has over CO lol.

Personally, I like playing on a PC than on my kids PS3 so I guess those who are like me wouldn't be affected that much.

First impressions are everything and DCUO I believe will have a good launch. I think we'll be seeing tumbleweeds in CO very shortly.

DCUO lacks the character creation that CO has... yes, there's far more important things than creating a truly custom character, but it does'nt give me a good first impression.

A super hero game will never be a juggernaut. Its way to unidimensional & catter to a very narrow crowd. Only the die hard comic book fans want to play a hero wack a mole game for more than a couple weeks imo.

As for how DCUO will affect CO... Does anyone realy care what happen to that game?

No. DCUO will have NO affect on CO, or at least so little it will be unnoticeable. Here's why:

1) You can't take from something that doesnt exist. CO's population has already dwindled down about as far as it's going to go. There are only enough people on to play with if you're in a guild, but if you're not, you're going to have a hard time finding people to do the various group instances with. It doesn't have the community it did at launch, because the various issues CO had killed it and the majority of those people have not come back. They probably won't either, until F2P CO, which leads into point 2...

2) CO is going F2P soon. DCUO has a subscription fee. That means a person can play both, and many people will. There are undoubtedly people who will play DCUO that still like CO enough to check in whenever there's a new update or expansion, and they will do so. On top of that, CO will be the only Super Hero MMO that is free to play, with both DCUO and CoX requiring a monthly payment. No matter how many issues CO had, it is still FAR superior to the standard F2P fair. That doesn't include LoTRO and DDO, which while F2P started out as P2P and are backed by a larger company far more interested in quality than say...Perfect World International.

3) If you talk to people playing CO, you'll find the better majority of them hate on DCUO. Feverishly. Mentioning DCUO in global chat is like mentioning WoW in LoTRO chat. You will get flamed. Avoid it. I'm sure plenty of those people have no justifiable reason to hate on DCUO, but they do it anyway, because they are dedicated to CO and see DCUO as encroaching on their territory somehow. It's unlikely those people are going to move from CO to DCUO

That's why CO will continue on its merry way whether DCUO comes out tomorrow or two years from now. The only way this can change is if F2P alienates people to a huge degree, which at the moment doesn't seem to be the case.

I am not sure that the game go really for the same players. CO may be a superhero game but it is still a classical MMO while DCU is more similar to an action/arcade game.

I think DCU also flirts a lot with console players and for that matter people who want something more of an FPS.

Nothing wrong with that we need some more action oriented MMOs as well as classical combat. The MMO genre have had kinda boring combat lately, it have been more or less the same since M59 and EQ released. try some new things doesn't hurt, it is a good way to get new players into the genre.

I don't however think neither of the games are much for me, even if I am a Jim Lee fan (I used to read Gen 13 before) who made the art for DCU.

COs arch nemesis is and have always been CoX.

Why should DCUO have more of an impact on Champions Online than, say, Guild Wars 2, TERA, SW:TOR, or various other upcoming games?  Do people really not look at anything more substantial than "it's a superhero game!" before deciding what to play?  SOE hasn't released enough information on DCUO game mechanics to know what sort of games its nearest competitors will be.

Can we please stop necro'ing this thread.  It was 2 months dead before you posted and it really really did not need to be revived.
