MMORPG.com's Carolyn Koh has been spending her time delving into the dark depths of the Hello Kitty Online Beta in recent weeks to bring us an in-depth look at this cute MMO based on the popular Hello Kitty franchise.
Hello Kitty Online. So cute you could puke. Yes? No? That was what I went out to discover as I entered Sanrioland, created my little avatar dressed in a plain tanktop and shorts, and named her. Not too many choices in faces and hair so I quickly settled on one and braced myself to be overwhelmed by “cute.”
It was. Overwhelmingly cute. What can I say? Hello Kitty and her friends – Badtz-Maru, My Melody, Purin, Pochaco, Keroppi, ad nauseum is all about cute. Their motto is “Bring Happiness to the World” and they surely try. The User Interface is simple – so simple it took me a while to figure it out – the green check icon means “Yes” dummy… The entire game can be navigated via mouse clicks and indeed, movement is done by mouse-click.
Created by Sanrio Digital and based in Hong Kong, Hello Kitty in Asia is targeted towards the “Office Ladies” – women in their twenties to their thirties, most who have never played an MMOG in their life. In the US, the demographic that Hello Kitty appeals to shifts downwards to the younger players in their teens. Players will also find that Hello Kitty Online is not just an MMOG, but an integrated social space, with blogs and mini-games that you can access directly from the game.

Please shoot me now before my old Sanrio addiction flares up and lures me towards the pink, pink homes...
My God Armagedon is upon us. We have all been given the kiss of death. Why has this cruel world done this to us. Do they having Butters running a company or something, just unbelievable.
When Butters talked about HKO in that episode, was the game already announced and in development?
Sadly...no
-Jive
I think the game is cute yet amusing. Just the idea of it, that is.
Keep this is mind - Not all MMO's are for YOU. There's a variety of individuals out there with different tastes. Why bash it? You haven't tried it out. Females do play games. Sheesh.
Oh my god, are you implying you'd be no man if you try a game like this? Grow up. lol
The mature types wouldn't bash any games, just to state opinions as to what needs to be improved and whatnot. NOW that's a man (in reference to who isn't).
Good luck with Hello Kitty Online.
Oh well, looks like his comment was deleted.
Hey, alot of people were complaining about a new, different type of MMO.
Here you go.
Indeed.. they just deleted my comment, they also deleted the topic I made about hello kitty.. and I just found a warning in my inbox..
i'm just really dissapointed, sorry but I really can't take hello kitty online serious.. this is like that joke from southpark.. and now it is real.. And I don't think I said someting about how strange you must be to play this game....? Well I can say you I will never try out the game, I can talk about everything, try everything.. but this Is going just too far for me.I don't think a lot of female players would like this game.. maby some kids.. But I don't believe you can take that game serious.
yeah no i dont believe so i think im setting myself up by revealing that i wanted to actual see if there was a HKIA game but there wasnt and omg this is deadly. butters is going to be the only one who plays this.
I was really starting to wonder when they would release a Hello Kitty MMO, well seemce they finally managed this step also.
Now the time has arrived for the Hello Kitty franchise to hit the Theme Park market as soon as possible by creating a Theme Park based exclusively on Hello Kitty elements.
Wow, and all this time I thought that it was just a joke, but here it is. Hello Kitty online. You have to be yanking me?
*sighs*
Well it'll probably be better than AoC....
WoW Killer, Obviously.
Hmm...
Skill-based and with a very heavy emphasis on crafting...
Player housing - and you get a garden too!
This sounds disturbingly close to what some old fogies would consider a perfect MMO....
Lol, I'm in shock it took 12 replies to get to the AoC bashing
I might try it out. LOL
Im a female and Im quite an avid gamer.. and I like to expand my gaming experience in a variety of games. I cannot just stick with one at a time.. Id get burnt out easily. I think it's a cute game. There's no game that would be better than the other. It's just frankly simple, just don't play it. For an example, everyone's like zzzomg @ AoC and yet you guys get disappointed with the way things has turned out and it doesn't work well with your systems.. [sigh] Hello Kitty Online may be for you. ;]
The graphic decapitation finishing moves put me off.....
I wonder if they have system specs out yet. Im thinking
3ghz quads
4 gig ram
9800 GTS sli

Is this a joke?
I was just joking, I find it fun to mess with this mmo. But, seriously I know alot of girls that would look into this game. I am sure it will be rather successfull in Japan where is a way of life. I am a little worried about some of the other people that might play the game, it could turn into the next myspace for ill willed people.
This is hardcore.
My whole corp from EvE is going to make the move ASAP.
Nobody took Pokemon serious either, and look how much money it made! Don't forget a plumber named Mario too.
Oh, and that yellow rounded Pac-Man thing.
Difference here is that Hello Kitty is an established franchise, there is very little suprise in what you are going to get from this game. Each of the others was a new idea and the concept was criticized.
I swear that I thought all the references to Hello Kitty MMOs were a joke.
I also thought this was a late 1 april joke or someting
but after getiing a warning of trolling and 2 posts deleted... I think it's real :(
I agree i thought this was a joke also. I even have this as my desk top as i thought it was the coolest thing i had seen in a long time. Now that i know Hello Kitty online it real or atleast in the works i bet it will do well.
Lol ^^ that's cool :D
Take it most of you here don't realize how huge Hello Kitty is out there in the world! The game is not that bad and was quite fun to test and ran wonderfully well!
I think it might attract more 20-30ish ladies in the US than they think. My ex-sister-in-law and my son's girlfriend, both mid-20's, are heavy into Hello Kitty collecting. I'll check it out too, I'm ashamed to confess. I am a lady too but older than that.
And it will probably be huge with the 8-12 year old crowd.
Now we will start seeing the "Will my system run Hello Kitty?" threads....
I went totally "Harvest Moon" on the farming. Can you see it now? Harvest Moon Online?
To each his own. Although it was cute overload, I actually had fun with it. It helps to have a 6 year old niece who thought I was the "bestest auntie in the whole wide world" for getting Hello Kitty Online. It *can* be a grind if you "work" it like a regular MMOG, but it's a lot of fun to simply run around chatting, showing off your house / farm / cool duds and doing the quests at the same time.
The Hello Kitty Franchise is huge and the tools that Sanrio Digital has provided to grow the community is bonus - Hello Kitty email, video editor (Dream Studio), forums and blogs. All which can be accessed from the game itself.
Somewhere in internet land, I think, a male gamer reviewed it. I recall him mentioning he had a hard time finding the least "pink" house to build.
Hehe, funny to see. Well what do you expect, guys, its a kid game. ^^
I am afraid we carebears gonne hear "stfu and play Hello Kitty Online" in stead of "go and play WOW" now.
Or maybe they make a Hello Cthulhu expansion, ja ne?
Will there be free-for-all PvP? I want to pwn some kitties.
Hell has indeed frozen over.
Oy vei.
"Mommy, mommy, make the bad man stop!"
P.S. Posting in Legendary Thread.
It won't truly be a MMO success until we see naked kitties dancing on various objects, and farmers selling cat nip (the game's currency I assume) on their websites. We'll just call them nip farmers.
Can you imagine the in-game spam messages?
Message from UberKitty1092783: Buy ur Kat nip here. 1 mil nips/$10. Come to xxxxxx site now! omGz!
Just wanted to correct something here... Hello Kitty Online WAS announced, and in development, when South Park did their WoW episode and Butters made the reference to "Hello Kitty Island Adventure."
That episode aired on October 4th, 2006. I'm having trouble finding the original articles, because so many MMO sites have replaced/deleted them, but I can confirm that the first press release from Sanrio about plans for HKO was sent out on January 7th, 2005, some 21 months before the South Park episode.
actually it was already being made,..well actually the way i heard about it was that someone was making fun of another game and said they where gonna wait for hello kitty online,..that was a while ago i think they were just talking about making it at the time,..but i beleive that is where the giot teh idea to mention it in south park
Is that the sound of the world grinding to a halt, and hell freezing over? I believe it is.
I wonder if they'll have a RP and FFA PvP server?
LOL damn I was hoping to be the first to giggle and ask for pvp... Be the first to stun your opponents obnoxiously cute character! Get insanely cute arena gear to help you stun better!
Oh yeah... I can just see Wow having a head on collision with HKO. World Kittycraft Online.
*gigglesnort*
Stop... please stop... my sides hurt and I cant hardly breath... lol
Black Kitties dancing naked on mailboxes.... catnip spammers.
I wait with baited breath and barely contained giggle-fits to see a nude-patch. xD
Thats a lotta nips for your buck!
Seriously, though, I'm not even going to lie. I loved Harvest Moon...and just the PREMISE of having my own crops in an MMO is enough to warrant my playing this on a trail basis and seeing where it takes me. I LOVE crafting and creating. The fact that, should I get bored, I can molly-whop something with a microphone just makes me giggle.
All my giggling and poking fun aside. Im curious to know if this is f2p or p2p... if its free... Ill download it and try it out. I like crafting too. >.>
Sadly, this sounds better than most current MMOs out there right now.
Didn't know the franchise, but now I wonder when we will see My Little Pony Online and Carebears Online?
omg omg These are the cutest cute cute avator I have ever seen and played.
i love Santrio avator, I have all Santrio Stuffs in my bedroom ,
I knew a woman over in Lansing that had such a set up... you never saw so much pink in your life. lol I loved it.
Elitistjerks members will have their hands full with this one, I tell ya.
My prayers have been answered! I welcome our kitty overlords. Warcraft says what?
I did some research, and now I understand why I did not know the franchise. It is a direct rip-off of Nijntje by Dick Bruna (known as Miffy world-wide). It never replaced the original over here.
BEST GAME EVER!!!!
lol sig.
This is great news of all of the NGE Players of SWG . This game should go live about time NGE shuts down . Its a no brainer game jump for those with no brains,
Haha....
This game will test the man in you! Not to mention half of the guys bashing this game in a very special fashion, probably will be playing it in secret.
If the game is hilarious and makes you drop half dead of laughter, why not play it?
All i see here, are a bunch of wannabee "mature" guys having no balls.
I'm there if they make a FFA PVP server.
With full looting.
a hello kitty-pvp server xD
little kittys smashing on each other to dead, I hope you see a lot of blood
1) This game has been in development for way too long... I remember reading about this before WoW came out...
2) It looks like they bought the engine rights from Fairyland, if anyone else remembers that game. Nice looking, but still isometric and cheap
3) ... North American release date? I hope not. Keep it to the asias.
Just curious why is this site bothering itself with a children's game?
I am sure there is a market for Hello Kitty, It has been going since the early 70's and has many fans..
That aside, take a look at this, it comes straight from the Hello Kitty Wiki,
"A planned Sanrio themed MMORPG, Hello Kitty Online, is currently in beta testing. The developers are SanrioDigital and Typhoon Games. After creating an account, one can make a character and customize them. In addition to fighting monsters and socializing, one can mine for ores, farm, cook, etc. Quests are a part of the game, being able to meet other Sanrio characters as well. Pets and housing have been implemented too. Among the first to play the game have been hard-core World of Warcraft gamers."
Last sentence is the one to read!!
Hello Kitty is actually extremely popular with adults, particularly women of all ages. There is a Sanrio store at the Mall of America, and I'd guess "kids" (with their parents) probably only account for maybe 1/4 of their business. Mostly it's women and geeky guys who are into anything Japanese.
Even if HKO *was* primarily targetting children (which I don't think it really is), MMORPG.com as far as I know does not discriminate against kid-friendly MMO's. Check out the entries for ToonTown, Pirates of the Caribbean Online, and all those cutesy Asian F2P's that under-18 kids tend to play (since their parents won't let them actually PAY for a game).
Y'know, I had to check th date when I saw this... Not april first, So it's real... And will probably be a Hit. I can see plenty of people getting into this. I've already posted two Blogs about it... But there is a problem that comes to mind; Adults looking for kids. I hope to God this isn't the most contravercial game to date... I'm hoping that it won't be, at least.
QFT
Miffy is the orignal and waay better than that coldly-calculated commercial ripoff Kitty.
Hello Kitty is Miffy on crack. If Miffy is UO then Hello Kitty is WoW.
it's friday 13 joke
Ive never heard of Miffy... and I knew about HK back in the 80s I think.
Uhmmm....well, I have to agree.
Honestly, I think it sounds just adorable. I don't know if it will be able to trap and enslave me for 4 years like WoW did, but I'm willing to give it a go. Sounds more casual. Personally, I'm getting pretty bent about having to be so hardcore in games to "keep up with the Joneses," so to speak. I like immersive games, but WoW, at one point became like another full time JOB for me, constantly having to make raids and "do my job," so that our guild/company could OMGWTFBBQPWN everyone else on the server.
Blech. It's time for me to play something more light-hearted and just have an enjoyable guilty pleasure. Aren't games SUPPOSED to be FUN? I'm not having fun with any of the classic MMOs anymore, so.....
BRING IT ON, HELLO KITTY!! I'll be there with bells on! (And maybe a cute little diamond-studded collar too.)
Rofl
Lets all play nice
You may be joking but I couldn't help but think "gosh, it's everything I've been wishing a new MMO would come out with" since UO.
Now the question is.. is housing instanced?
I am a female gamer but I have never liked Hello Kitty.. except a mild interest in the pencil cases sporting 15 secret compartments when I was about 7. But if I can get past the ridiculous cuteness the gameplay actually sounds pretty appealing.
Hold on is this a joke??? Its not even april 1st. Someone please tell me this is a joke and its not real?
So?
Nijntje was first published in 1955.
"In 1964, Nijntje appeared in Japan as Usako and later as Miffy (or Miffy-chan). She became so popular that Japanese marketers soon realized her commercial potential as a fashion icon. They knew that the Japanese tweens, teenagers and even twenty-somethings would love her simple design and cuteness (“kawaii” in Japanese).
In 1974, the Japanese company Sanrio adapted her to Japanese fascinations, which feature not bunnies, but kitties, and not the Dutch, but the British culture. Miffy, the Dutch bunny rabbit, became Hello Kitty, the English kitten.
In an interview, Dick Bruna said that Sanrio admitted to being inspired by Miffy. Sanrio has, however, never admitted this in public, and the copyright has never been worked out."
But that is not our concern, of course. Just interesting to know. For me it explains why Hello Kitty look so much like Nijntje. My first thought was "hey did Dick Bruna make that?" Apparently not.
So?

So? I wasnt saying you made stuff up... I just said I had never heard of Miffy.
So? I wasnt saying you made stuff up... I just said I had never heard of Miffy.
And I was not saying that you did. We are both so clever.
This game is going to rock, the word is this game is comming out with FFA PVP and a hard core permadeath PVP server.
Everything has to be craftable, and player build cities!
The death pentalties in this game are going to make EQ death penalties look like a joke! Naked corps runs will be the norm and level losses at death will be very common.
A game that takes women out of my game? Sounds good to me! Bring on the care-bear game! Sorry ladies, no insult intended, but sadly most women I have met in MMO's are attention getters and usually make the guild dramas what they are. Guys just want stuff and to kill things, you want attention and more attention and ummm.. more of that.
So I say bring on the kitty and let the mice play elswhere ;)
I am really looking forward to the release of HKO. I have been really impressed with what I thought was originally a fairly unknown game. I admit that I was fairly skeptical (like others) at first as a Hello Kitty MMORPG just sounds...well...a bit far fetched.
But now, it seems that the actual appeal of this game is its "far fetched-ness". The graphics look super cute. It will be interesting to see an MMORPG that doesn't contain the usual consortium of swords, spells, and disgruntled fantasy beasts. Hello Kitty may have the potential to stir up quite a lot in the MMORPG world. I don't think the "cuteness" factor has ever been pushed like this, so I am quite intrigued.
The "Hello Cthulhu" and "Hello Kitty 40,000" fan art is a funny example of HKO's popularity already with the online gaming community. There's a bunch of cool stuff like that floating around, check out these giant mech robots for example:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=erGvc9HThgM
So yeah, I am quite looking forward to seeing HKO in action.
I just want to enjoy the cuteness of HKO? Why not?
Haha well I am not going to lie. You are going to love HKO then. It is CUTE
Might finally be an MMO my wife would try. Sounds fun. I know my friend's little girls are going to love it. They already like to walk around in his Battlefield 1942 and play house in Stalingrad.
"O.K., this one is going to be my house because it has lots of windows ."
I'm an MMO freak and would try it just for the hell of it because it's different. Why not?
Bring on the KiityPwn !
Bring on the kitty style PvP! haha
hello kitty online with PVP wth?is this true??
