Hello Kitty Online News - Beta Preview

Posted by Keith Cross on Jun 12, 2008  | 80 comments in our forums

MMORPG.com's Carolyn Koh has been spending her time delving into the dark depths of the Hello Kitty Online Beta in recent weeks to bring us an in-depth look at this cute MMO based on the popular Hello Kitty franchise.

Hello Kitty Online. So cute you could puke. Yes? No? That was what I went out to discover as I entered Sanrioland, created my little avatar dressed in a plain tanktop and shorts, and named her. Not too many choices in faces and hair so I quickly settled on one and braced myself to be overwhelmed by “cute.”

It was. Overwhelmingly cute. What can I say? Hello Kitty and her friends – Badtz-Maru, My Melody, Purin, Pochaco, Keroppi, ad nauseum is all about cute. Their motto is “Bring Happiness to the World” and they surely try. The User Interface is simple – so simple it took me a while to figure it out – the green check icon means “Yes” dummy… The entire game can be navigated via mouse clicks and indeed, movement is done by mouse-click.

Created by Sanrio Digital and based in Hong Kong, Hello Kitty in Asia is targeted towards the “Office Ladies” – women in their twenties to their thirties, most who have never played an MMOG in their life. In the US, the demographic that Hello Kitty appeals to shifts downwards to the younger players in their teens. Players will also find that Hello Kitty Online is not just an MMOG, but an integrated social space, with blogs and mini-games that you can access directly from the game.

I think the game is cute yet amusing. Just the idea of it, that is.

Keep this is mind - Not all MMO's are for YOU. There's a variety of individuals out there with different tastes. Why bash it? You haven't tried it out. Females do play games. Sheesh.

Oh my god, are you implying you'd be no man if you try a game like this? Grow up. lol

The mature types wouldn't bash any games, just to state opinions as to what needs to be improved and whatnot. NOW that's a man (in reference to who isn't).

Good luck with Hello Kitty Online.

I was really starting to wonder when they would release a Hello Kitty MMO, well seemce they finally managed this step also.

Now the time has arrived for the Hello Kitty franchise to hit the Theme Park market as soon as possible by creating a Theme Park based exclusively on Hello Kitty elements.

There's no game that would be better than the other. It's just frankly simple, just don't play it. For an example, everyone's like zzzomg @ AoC and yet you guys get disappointed with the way things has turned out and it doesn't work well with your systems.. [sigh] Hello Kitty Online may be for you. ;]

I was just joking, I find it fun to mess with this mmo.  But, seriously I know alot of girls that would look into this game.  I am sure it will be rather successfull in Japan where is a way of life.  I am a little worried about some of the other people that might play the game, it could turn into the next myspace for ill willed people.

Difference here is that Hello Kitty is an established franchise, there is very little suprise in what you are going to get from this game.  Each of the others was a new idea and the concept was criticized.

To each his own.  Although it was cute overload, I actually had fun with it.  It helps to have a 6 year old niece who thought I was the "bestest auntie in the whole wide world" for getting Hello Kitty Online.  It *can* be a grind if you "work" it like a regular MMOG, but it's a lot of fun to simply run around chatting, showing off your house / farm / cool duds and doing the quests at the same time.

The Hello Kitty Franchise is huge and the tools that Sanrio Digital has provided to grow the community is bonus - Hello Kitty email, video editor (Dream Studio), forums and blogs.  All which can be accessed from the game itself.

Somewhere in internet land, I think, a male gamer reviewed it.  I recall him mentioning he had a hard time finding the least "pink" house to build.

Just wanted to correct something here... Hello Kitty Online WAS announced, and in development, when South Park did their WoW episode and Butters made the reference to "Hello Kitty Island Adventure."

That episode aired on October 4th, 2006. I'm having trouble finding the original articles, because so many MMO sites have replaced/deleted them, but I can confirm that the first press release from Sanrio about plans for HKO was sent out on January 7th, 2005, some 21 months before the South Park episode.

"A planned Sanrio themed MMORPG, Hello Kitty Online, is currently in beta testing. The developers are SanrioDigital and Typhoon Games. After creating an account, one can make a character and customize them. In addition to fighting monsters and socializing, one can mine for ores, farm, cook, etc. Quests are a part of the game, being able to meet other Sanrio characters as well. Pets and housing have been implemented too. Among the first to play the game have been hard-core World of Warcraft gamers."

Hello Kitty is actually extremely popular with adults, particularly women of all ages.  There is a Sanrio store at the Mall of America, and I'd guess "kids" (with their parents) probably only account for maybe 1/4 of their business.  Mostly it's women and geeky guys who are into anything Japanese.

Even if HKO *was* primarily targetting children (which I don't think it really is), MMORPG.com as far as I know does not discriminate against kid-friendly MMO's.  Check out the entries for ToonTown, Pirates of the Caribbean Online, and all those cutesy Asian F2P's that under-18 kids tend to play (since their parents won't let them actually PAY for a game).

QFT

Miffy is the orignal and waay better than that coldly-calculated commercial ripoff Kitty.

Hello Kitty is Miffy on crack. If Miffy is UO then Hello Kitty is WoW.

Uhmmm....well, I have to agree.

Honestly, I think it sounds just adorable.  I don't know if it will be able to trap and enslave me for 4 years like WoW did, but I'm willing to give it a go.  Sounds more casual.  Personally, I'm getting pretty bent about having to be so hardcore in games to "keep up with the Joneses," so to speak.  I like immersive games, but WoW, at one point became like another full time JOB for me, constantly having to make raids and "do my job," so that our guild/company could OMGWTFBBQPWN everyone else on the server.

Blech.  It's time for me to play something more light-hearted and just have an enjoyable guilty pleasure.  Aren't games SUPPOSED to be FUN?  I'm not having fun with any of the classic MMOs anymore, so.....

BRING IT ON, HELLO KITTY!!  I'll be there with bells on!  (And maybe a cute little diamond-studded collar too.)

You may be joking but I couldn't help but think "gosh, it's everything I've been wishing a new MMO would come out with" since UO.

Now the question is.. is housing instanced?

I am a female gamer but I have never liked Hello Kitty.. except a mild interest in the pencil cases sporting 15 secret compartments when I was about 7. But if I can get past the ridiculous cuteness the gameplay actually sounds pretty appealing.

"In 1964, Nijntje appeared in Japan as Usako and later as Miffy (or Miffy-chan). She became so popular that Japanese marketers soon realized her commercial potential as a fashion icon. They knew that the Japanese tweens, teenagers and even twenty-somethings would love her simple design and cuteness (“kawaii” in Japanese).

In 1974, the Japanese company Sanrio adapted her to Japanese fascinations, which feature not bunnies, but kitties, and not the Dutch, but the British culture. Miffy, the Dutch bunny rabbit, became Hello Kitty, the English kitten.

In an interview, Dick Bruna said that Sanrio admitted to being inspired by Miffy. Sanrio has, however, never admitted this in public, and the copyright has never been worked out."

But that is not our concern, of course. Just interesting to know. For me it explains why Hello Kitty look so much like Nijntje. My first thought was "hey did Dick Bruna make that?" Apparently not.

And I was not saying that you did. We are both so clever.

The death pentalties in this game are going to make EQ death penalties look like a joke! Naked corps runs will be the norm and level losses at death will be very common.

A game that takes women out of my game? Sounds good to me! Bring on the care-bear game! Sorry ladies, no insult intended, but sadly most women I have met in MMO's are attention getters and usually make the guild dramas what they are. Guys just want stuff and to kill things, you want attention and more attention and ummm.. more of that.

So I say bring on the kitty and let the mice play elswhere ;)

I am really looking forward to the release of HKO. I have been really impressed with what I thought was originally a fairly unknown game. I admit that I was fairly skeptical (like others) at first as a Hello Kitty MMORPG just sounds...well...a bit far fetched.

But now, it seems that the actual appeal of this game is its "far fetched-ness". The graphics look super cute. It will be interesting to see an MMORPG that doesn't contain the usual consortium of swords, spells, and disgruntled fantasy beasts. Hello Kitty may have the potential to stir up quite a lot in the MMORPG world. I don't think the "cuteness" factor has ever been pushed like this, so I am quite intrigued.

The "Hello Cthulhu" and "Hello Kitty 40,000" fan art is a funny example of HKO's popularity already with the online gaming community. There's a bunch of cool stuff like that floating around, check out these giant mech robots for example:

So yeah, I am quite looking forward to seeing HKO in action.

Might finally be an MMO my wife would try.   Sounds fun.  I know my friend's little girls are going to love it.  They already like to walk around in his Battlefield 1942  and play house in Stalingrad.    "O.K., this one is going to be my house because it has lots of windows ."

I'm an MMO freak and would try it just for the hell of it because it's different.  Why not?

Bring on the KiityPwn !
