I suppose it comes down to something pretty simple. Most men love cute things - IE cute girls to hang out with look at etc. Only wierd males that I know of like to be the cute thing. To play an MMO usually means for most people to enter the world and envision yourself as being what that world represents. So to walk into an MMO world based on cuteness to envision yourself as the center of that cuteness is just a little wierd and odd, definately not for me :) . I do think though there is potentially a huge untapped market of females that would love that sort of thing and so I say go for it to them.

I dont know a single thing about this MMO and the closest I have come to the Hello Kitty world is a girl I knew about 5 years ago really loved the Hello Kitty stuff and even then I pretty much figured it was a girly thing and left it at that.

Interesting post...it ties in with the insecurity thing well.  See...the very need to play a game and immerse yourself only in the character which best fits what you wish YOU could be is a big red flag for some deep security problems.  I do like to play things which are things I cannot be in real life....but most times my character is simply means to an end in that regard.

I often do not view my character in game as some kind of virtual representation of my own self.  Except in CoX...where I actually MADE a character that looked exactly like me.  That technically WOULD be a virtual exactness of my own personal self.

baseball doesn't have it right. A man with 4 balls CANNOT walk.

HKO might be a great game, might be incredible. I might give it a shot. If i choose not to give it a shot, it won't be because of the reasons the OP mentioned. It will simply be because i have no knowledge or interest in the IP. So if there's a trial and Im bored, I'll try it. Or if I see someone else playing, I'll check it out.

I would guess this is the same position most guys take-no insecurities involved.

I own, and wear, pink shirts at times. I happen to like pink, and I'll kindly introduce my steel-toed boots to the ass of anyone who finds the cajones to laugh to my face about it.

Hello Kitty is not "girly".

It's childish.

That's why I won't play it.

Frankly, at this point....HKO has just as much chance to kick ass as anything else.  I don't see any of the "men" games rocking socks off these days.  I'd actually be a major supporter of the "slap in the face" an HKO success would give this god forsaken industry.

Hear here!  I'm a married man without 'issues' regarding my gender/masculinity.  I have played 'dudes' and 'chicks' in just about every game to see if there's any sociological differences on how I'm treated.  Actually there is, but a story for another day.

I too will be trying it.  Admittedly 'cute' doesn't appeal to me, but neither did most genres of the games I play when they first started out.  If it is a good game, I shall play it.  Heck, I'll even discuss strategy with my guy-gamer friends if it turns out to be interesting.

well hear it from a Man who tried it, it was really fun and I say if Animal Crossing and Harvest Moon is fun for men and boys alike, then so is this!

As if Age of Conan isn't for adults only ;-) I've read my share of violent comics and books in my time and I certainly wasn't an adult male then, since when did Orcs, Wizards and Dragons become the exclusive realm of so called adults?

D&D anyone? how old where you when you met your first Wizard/Orc/Dragon (for the men out there lol)

Well said havel, I remember in High School it was all about being cool.  Then I was into heavy metal and blow-up sci-fi movies like Aliens (great movie) but in college, my roommate and I woke up Saturday mornings, ate Fruit Loops and watched Sesame Street.  Why?  Grass roots, college was a headache and letting your mind return to muppets was very therapeutic.  Coloring books were a hot commodity because we needed a break from studying for the upcoming chemistry exam.  I bet pound for pound, we'll find a lot of men who are bankers, scientists, doctors and soldiers weighing in for the same relaxation/goofy potential.

Okay, i laughed when people are still so afraid to be more open-minded.

Men card? Give me a break. Ive never heard that ever.

Im a guy, i shave my armpits and occasionally arms (Due to that i hate hair that's belove the neck.)

Ive had skirts on me, pink t-shirts with ponies and etc. Yet i don't feel unsecure in my masculinity. Im jsut opne minded :-p

And no, i won't play this game because it's not my cup of tea.

I think that holding your pinpoint over the stereotype of being a "man" is so overrated it's stupid -_-

The speed of the mole and the power of steel is my weapon

Hmmm...I don't shave my armpits, but do believe in keeping trimmed with a beard/body hair trimmer.  Summertime increases the funk-factor even with deoderant so unless your girl is into that kind of thing, probably a good idea to keep it short.

I don't wear dresses unless a joke is involved (which happened twice in my life).

Here's what I say to the men:

If you like football, excellent.  If you like ballet, awesome.  If you feel weird following your girlfriend/fiancee/wife into a women's underwear store, then check yourself and ask what you're trying to prove.  When you get married, you should be taking turns folding it and perhaps your daughter's as well.

Nicely put, and change your daughters nappies too if you have never done so yourself!

Lets face it, MMOs today are turning into single player console games with a chat box included.

Did this thread really digress into where men choose to shave?

I wont lie, I would definately poke fun at a friend of mine if he played it. Would I think any less of him? Probably not, but cmon you cant let comedic gold like this just slip through your fingers.

I guess if one of my kids wanted me to play it I might, but thats about the only way I can see myself picking it up. Mind you though, I would expect my pals to bust on me for it.

You also have to remember that the adolescent male hierarchy is more prevalent is more prevalent nowadays because young men do not mature at quite the same pace they used to.

Awesome pic!  Some guys can look good in pink, others not so much.  I'm in the 'not so much' catagory, but it's all good.  No doubt there will be a backlash to the goth movement in a few years where pastels will be the anti-goth tough guy style :-D.

If Hello Kitty were to toughen its image, it would wear...

Goth Leathers
Camo's and military facepaint
Football gear
Tattered Pirate outfit
Ninja mask and black gi
Knight's full plate
Samurai armor

Actually I can totally imagine this shirt on a guy, could look pretty good. I think this is the kind of pink that works with (many) guys. ;]

Hello Kitty and Baby Milo

@saint4God - Btw I voted "Knight's full plate" :P

Hehe, thanks for the vote.  As cool as that shirt is, I seriously doubt I could wear it without being targeted as a child molester or  having questionable romantic interests.  I know I'm supposed to 'buck the trend' in my life, but with my wife and daughter to consider, I'll stick to the more masculine archetype.

Men, do you wear pink?

Absolutely.
Sometimes.
Only on a tie or men's dress shirt.
Never.

Think I'll wait for DoW:Kitty Island Crusade myself...

Hundreds of years from now, it will not matter what size my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove... But the world may be different because I did something so bafflingly crazy that my ruins become a tourist attraction.
