Earthrise News - The Industrial Area

Posted by Jon Wood on Jul 13, 2009  | 11 comments in our forums

The team from Earthrise has put together this lore-based developer journal revealing the situation surrounding the "industrial area" in-game.

Earthrise

The Industrial Area was created as part of the major expansion plans of Continoma. Construction began during the first waves of the Resurrection as the Pioneers built the first installations from basic modules and metal scraps and endured hellish working conditions in their push for completion. Without their heroic efforts, the marvelous city of Sal Vitas or the immense projects of the Concession Territories would have been left on the drawing board forever.

The industrial area is just a part of the map, like Ogrimmar is a part of the map in WoW.

Earthrise is all about territorial warfare and open world FFA PvP with full loot actually

What a shame ...I had such high hopes for a new sci fi game :(

This game looked promising but with FFA PVP and Full Loot its just going to suck with all the ass hats it will attract

Earthrise isn't actually Sci-Fi, it's declared post-apocalyptic by the developer. Just not in the style of Mad Max, but some few hundred years after the apocalypse :)

Obvious Troll is Obvious.....or is it Rabid Fanboi?

I'm not going to debate what falls in to the realm of Sci-Fi with you...You can call it what ever you want but last time I checked post-apocalypse was considered science fiction..... or possibly religion...(ugh not touching that one)

You might want to read the FAQ since it does state it is Science Fiction set in a Post-Apocalyptic Earth.

 » What is Earthrise?
Earthrise is a post-apocalyptic science fiction MMORPG, set in the dark future of the planet Earth. The game is designed to run on the Windows operating system, and will be launching in 2009.

» Why Sci Fi?
We believe that science fiction themes in MMORPG games are clearly underdeveloped and need a fresh and innovative approach. Along with the action and battles which will take place in Earthrise, the game will raise questions such as:

What future awaits us?
How will the posthuman behave?
Should cloning of humans be allowed?
What will happen if the events preceding Earthrise become reality?
What is the real enemy of humans?

It isn't just as cut and dry as FFA PVP with full loot.  Items can be individually insured, and I believe you have to have killed someone to make you vulnerable to item dropping.  There is a pretty complex system in place for murderers which allows for players to uphold justice.  A large part of the PvP is through faction based warfare, but there is the option to be a solo murdering criminal, but it has risks such as item loss, and I believe when you are an advanced criminal you can't get your items insured.  I can't remember all the details, but I thought it looked good from a design perspective.  It's all subject to change of course.  I also believe they are working on a bounty system for these criminals where a play can accept a bounty, and then has a time limit to track them down, and is given a general area where they were last seen.  It could be a pretty interesting system.

Another cool thing to note is they have some offline progression.  It is a skill based game, but the skills don't level over time with offline progression like EVE.  Instead your career continues to progress whether online or offline.

In addition to their skills and abilities gained from adventuring, battling, and crafting, characters can take a "career" that will provide them with cash and other perks. Characters will advance in their career whenever they are offline. You can think of your character's career as their "day job": It's how they make money when they aren't killing mutants or battling in the Outer Territories or experimenting with lost technology. Some of the careers in the game include Holo Artist, Electro Sampler and Zero-T operator

My understanding about pvp is it is controlled to certain areas and not free for all. As for looting I have no idea.

Nope, sorry to do away with your wishful thinking there. Earthrise will be open world FFA PvP without flagging. You can even go on and shoot your group-members in the head.

Fighting will only be prohibited in the NPC-cities.

You don't need to be a bad boy yourself either, to be killable by the next one that crosses your way. However, for killing people you'll receive some standing-hits towards the NPC-factions and the killed person will have the opportunity to place a bounty on your head, but that's it.

Insuring your items works as follows: you buy an item and insure it. Now you start killing mobs and loot some stuff. As you get killed, your insured items get send automatically back into your vault and for the just looted stuff, you have the option to buy the stuff within a 30 second timer and secure it this way.
However the killer will get a monetary reward for every item you had insured.

You can read all this information on their forums in QotW-section.

FFA PvP, full loot= holy grail of online gaming. Anything else is a glorified single player game connected to the internet.

CANNOT  WAIT

Can I dry hump your dead body after I loot it?
