Underlight was a fantasy MMORPG touted as being a "true" roleplaying experience. Launched in 1998, the game was a 3-D world in which players themselves set the tone and pace of the world. The game was nearly completely lacking NPCs, and left players to run the dream world environment, shaping the virtual world in a unique way. The focus was on roleplaying and questing, not combat or item collection. Players could write quests for others, create monsters, create political systems and hierarchies, and essentially customize each guild as a separate space within the shared realm. Underlight featured low system requirements and was accessible to many. Due partly to the nature of the game, Underlight eventually took on a number of volunteers to help with development. A planned sequel, Reclamation, was announced, but development was abandoned when it was announced in November, 2006, that Underlight would shut down at the end of that year.
