I was just wondering what this game was like. I was looking at some of the screen shots on the official website, and the graphics look incredibly dated; are there newer graphics that have been implemented? Aside from the asthetic questions about graphics, overall, is it a fun game to play? What is there to do in the game? |

Hello, let me try to answer your questions. First off, unlike many others on this site, PlaneShift is not a commercial MMORPG, and all the work put into it has been voluntary. If you're looking for an MMORPG with competitive graphical quality, then PlaneShift probably isn't what you're looking for. Although the code is in the engine to support things like parallax mapping, as of now the game doesn't use them because they don't have a team of thirty or so professional artists they need to fully support the features. The game has some skills such as combat (swords, daggers, axe, melee, mace), spellcasting, mining, weaponcrafting, reparation, etc. but many skills still need to be implemented, such as alchemy, brewery, gemcutting, backstab, and so on. Many areas are still inaccessible because, although work has been done on them, they are not ready to be put into the game. Still, I personally consider it fun because it is a role-playing intensive game; everyone RPs in it and there are always people on. If none of that really matters to you, then that wouldn't be a problem. Else, it is still worth checking out every now and then. Unlike commercial MMORPGs, there is no big parent company around to axe the game, so PlaneShift will still be here years from now, and people will still be playing it. |

It's not a commercial project anymore, but it does aspire to commercial quality. I actually like the "vintage" graphics but that's because I belong to a generation that grew up on earlier games. |

Thought I would mention that there is now a version of the podium map with parallax mapping and specular, and it looks much much better than the old one. Perhaps this is a sign of good things to come. |
