When you log in, the servers are sorted from lowest to highest population. Freedom and Virtue are the most populous, but you'll have little problem finding teams on any server. At least hero-side. For villains, you might want to move to one of the others, or Protector, which I'm trying to make the unofficial villain server. (Well "trying" in the sense of wanting it to happen but not really doing anything about it.)

The biggest addition in the last year is the Architect Entertainment system, which allows players to create and share missions of their own for virtually unlimited content. The downside is that this has become popular with a lot of people for farming, thus resulting in the opposite - one mission forever. When you log in, you may be tempted to go there, get pulled on a tema, and level up very quickly. If that's what you want then feel free. But some new players have been so pulled in that they failed to realize the rest of the game. So I urge you not to spend all your time in one building when the whole game existed and thrived for years without it.

One upside of the AE - especially if used correctly - is that it allows players of different levels to team together without effort. But even without that it's pretty easy to find a team at any level. And as I said in another post, if you learn about the Task Forces then after level 10 there is always at least one you can earn experience on, and they push people into the same level range to make teaming easier.

The population is pretty good. At least until CO and any other hero games come out, they have a loyal fanbase of people who like the hero genre, as well as some like me who aren't so crazy about comic books but still like the gameplay.

Avoid Protector server, low population, teaming can be a pain at times.  Freedom, Virtue, Justice and Infinity are among the more populous servers.

Champion is where to go for excess drama.

Virtue and Victory tend to be the RP servers.

Freedom is sometimes Freedumb as there will be many new players who haven't learned the game yet and idiots who refuse to learn the game.

Wondering about this as well. I've enjoyed Aion Online in the closed and open betas. So I'll be around for that once it goes live. I've been playing WoW for a little while now and I've been liking it finally due to finding a nice guild. So I'm not really sure I want to leave it as a result. Though I do have an itch to play CoH/V again. Perhaps I'll alternate between WoW and CoH/V with Aion being the constant for a while.

protector is my main server its sparce but can find groups with in chat channels .been trying virtue an its hopen .tons of players easy to get groups if want.heck their was a costum contest in atlas an one then in galaxy at the same time.

ae changed game a bit but that will change again with i16 which may go live today.the boss farm missions will go away.ae offers a change up from orign starting missions an less of a problem travel powers . tho i read some whenre their helping 1 -24 level bit faster with i16 or gr.

i had choice of either geting chamions online or  get costum booster packs in cox . after reading all the co news an desideing to wait at least 3 months on it im enjoying the new costum parts in cox alot.

I play  mostly on freedom and have had no problem finding non-AE groups in the mornings and afternoons (eastern time) -- I'm assuming evening are even better.

I was going to ask pretty much the same thing.  I'm in between MMOs at the moment.  Left WAR for a while, completely quit LotRO, waiting for MO to be released, and bored out of my mind in my real life down-time.  I use to play CoH when it first came out then picked CoX up again months ago (before this AE I'm hearing about).  It was extremely fun but I didn't have the money or time at that point.  Now I do and am curious as to the state of the game as well.  All I hear people saying is how AE has ruined the game and it's rare to find players just questing through the actual story.  Is that true?

I played for an hour or so last night and saw maybe 6 or 7 other people while running to steel for a costum update.  That's not really that great considering I remember when the game was cram packed full of people wall to wall in steel a few years ago  8 )  But I'm optimistic that there are people running around somewhere ...

its all gona depend on server an zone realy on how many you see.my self tho i knida like not triping over otehr super heroes all the time.cox is heavy on instances. ae made it even worse but its a great alternate to doing low level missions with no travel power an if done right you end up wiht enuff ae tickets to buy SO's for all slots at 22.

Last night (based on the date of  your post) would have been Tuesday night? How many people do you expect to be online on a tuesday?

I've heard rumors that the first weekend after the release of i16 is going to be a double xp weekend. i16 is out now, so this weekend may very well be that double xp weekend. If you want to see what kind of populations this game can really bring in then make sure you log in during the double xp weekend. Its not uncommon to see the Freedom server completely FULL during a double xp weekend.

For the last few weeks CO has been getting a lot of the glory but that is about to change I believe. People are starting to figure out that CO is just CoX with fewer features and crappy graphics. Many will come back now that i16 is out. And when the expansion pack gets released many more will come back then (though this could still be six months away or more though).

To be honest, population across the board has been drifting down. That's not a fault of Champions Online though. To be honest, word is that CO is not doing well and less than a month in people are already drifting away. In the words of one person I teamed with last night "I wish I waited for i16 to come out before I wasted money trying CO."

No, the population decay has been slow but steady for months now, and I think it's because there hasn't been anything to really enhance gameplay since the invention system came out.

This month's issue 16 is "Power Spectrum" and if you've always wanted to customize the color of your powers, you can. They even have some more interesting changes, like how you can mix up Martial Arts by changing kick animations to punches. So if you're a person who loves to spend hours trying out different costumes for each of your many characters (and you could, it's that deep) then you'll love it. But those of us focused more on the gameplay haven't really seen anything new.

That said, the population is by no means hurting. What I do recommend though is that whatever server you go to, find that server's main Badge Channel and join it. Not only are they home to the most knowledgeable players, but they are the best place to find Task Force teams, which are some of the best teaming experiences possible.

On Pinnacle it's "PinnBadges"
On Liberty it's "LB"
On Infinity it's "Inf Badge Seeker"
On Protector it's "Protector Watch"
and I don't know the others, but ask around (use help chat "/hc <message>") and you'll find out.

And they are working on a boxed expansion, with no announcement date yet so I'd expect early next year. That will probably push up populations at least for a bit, as it provides an excuse for a new marketing campaign.

i agree aion was just clustered with ppl. i just started on justice i think and i must admit no lag lol. i was going to go back to lotro but i might just go with coh. still not too sure but honestly this game seems to be ok as soon as i logged in a was in a team and i noticed the sidekick thing was pretty cool which is something they should do in aion.

since my last posting i have gotten a chance to play a bit more and my only complaint is lack of players in my lvl bracket and it would be nice to hold more then 3 missions
