Hey everyone, I quit playing City of Heroes a long time ago and I am looking to come back but I have some questions before I do go back.
1. Do a lot of people still play this game and what servers are the most popular? 2. Are there any plans for another expansion? I read somewhere on here that someone said it was in development but I haven't herd anything. 3. Anything major change? 4. How is the community? A lot of people doing groups? 5. Is it worth going back?
I think that's all the questions I have for now. Thank you! |

Every new issue brings a fairly significant change. It will be hard to answer your questions unless we know when was the last time you played. |

That is a personal judgment call. I always enjoy coming back '

1. Do a lot of people still play this game and what servers are the most popular? There is still a large following playing CoH / CoV. Two of the servers seem to almost always hit Yellow State usage daily. At this time, I'm not able to remember which ones they are. I'm guessing they are Freedom and Liberty, but don't quote me for sure on it. 2. Are there any plans for another expansion? I read somewhere on here that someone said it was in development but I haven't herd anything. Yes, they made an announcment a couple of weeks ago that Issue #12 would be coming out. It is still in the stages of being put together and if it play like the previous issues, we should see beta testing sometime in the fall. The details that have been released so far look like it's going to be awsome! 3. Anything major change? Depending on when you left, there can be tons of changes awaiting your arrivle. They've added a lot of content and changed some zones around. They've introduced new power sets and inventions into the mix as well. They've changed a lot of mission formats and introduced Radio missions as well. 4. How is the community? A lot of people doing groups? I have never had a problem finding teams, costume contest, interaction events and general socializing. Pick up teams are available and easy to slip into. The super groups are active and running missions all the time. It seems to me that there are a lot of friendly, helpful people playing any time I'm on. 5. Is it worth going back? That one is going to be on you. You need to look at why you left in the first place and explore your options now. One month of play isn't much cost wise and you can cancel the account again if you're unhappy. I'm almost up for my 48 month Vet rewards. I've never stopped playing for more than a few days, and I have always enjoyed the game. There is always so much to do around the game, and I'm still finding out things that I've not notices, learned, or preformed before even after almost 4 years of play.
I hope it helps some.... Good Luck! |

Hmm, is Issue 12 like a huge update? Or an actual expansion? |

CoX doesn't do exapnsions like WoW does. Instead of one large exspansion a year that you have to shell out another $40-$50 for, the devs at CoX shoot for 3 (could be 4) smaller "Issues" a year for free. BTW, the highset population servers are Freedom and Virtue. Just be prepared to roleplay on Virtue. Thats the server that has a majority of RPers. |

CoH has also had only one expansion ever. Yes, WoW is having another one, but I'm sure there was once a plan for CoH to have more as well. CoH will probably not have any more expansions because a) City of Villains was absolutely terrible, and b) they know Champions Online is going to kill CoH. (OK, not kill it, but take enough of the player base that CoH expansions are not financially viable.) |

Your questions: The game recently hit its all time high for the Freedom server (which is the most popular). I have no problem finding people on any server, and would specifically not choose Freedom because I think it's a little too crowded. You'll see when you log in that the servers are in order with the most populated at the bottom. Even the lightest servers have enough people for me to form Pick-ups whenever I want, but if you're worried pick one in the middle. On the other hand, aren't you a returning player? Wouldn't you just want to use your older characters anyway? Most of the new stuff has been mostly for higher levels, so replaying 1-20 won't show you too much. Reading between the lines, it's possible. The game just switched hands from Cryptic to NCSoft. NC hired over 100% of the previous staff, so it's not like they're planning an overhaul. But with bringing those developers over, they also hired a bunch more. Because of the new staff, rumor is another full expansion may be planned for some point. What it would contain though is purely speculation. In the meantime, they've been doing a great job with 3 issues per year. You should check out the official features display. There's not so much known about i12 yet, but it will help you catch up on the other things you've missed. The basics of the game haven't changed, so if you hate instances or things like that, then it will still be true. But there are a good number of new maps, the crafting is new, people spend a lot more time playing their previously-retired 50s, and it's a good run. I think it remains one of the best communities around. I do pick-up groups all the time, either leading or getting invited in. And I'm almost always happy with who I meet. The other night I was doing one of the newer and most difficult challenges, the Statesman's Task Force. It was me, one other person I've teamed with a bit before, and 6 nice-but-mostly-inexperienced people. And we had a bit of a problem completing it, but eventually were able to get our focus, attempt a new strategy, teach the necessary skills, and win. Now I mention this because it was a difficult challenge and we didn't really know each other. Had it been an immature or argumentative player base, we surely would have disbanded. I think the fact that a group of virtual strangers can ultimately work so well together says a lot. I'll tell you, I was away for most of 2007. I came back in December, and have been loving it. If you have 50s that you retired because there was nothing for them to do, and no goals left to achieve, I think you'll find there's plenty to do now. And if you stopped your characters somewhere in the 30s because you felt like they weren't progressing fast enough, you'll like the new "XP Smoothing" change they just made. It's now much faster to get over those humps. If you want to come back, I recommend getting an "Invite a Friend Back" key and reactivating your old account. Like I said, you can't really get a good feel doing the first few levels over again. I happen to have a key listed right here for anyone who wants it, but you can get it from plenty of people if you want. Instead, if you want to start over with a trial, I'm sure someone can give you a key for that too, though I'm out at the moment. |

Originally posted by Hexxeity It looks like someone is confused about what an expansion is, which is something that is added to the game. WOW's one expansion was the Burning Crusade, if I recall correctly since I don't play it
COH's expansions consists of COV as well as eleven, soon to be twelve, updates which are called issues. So in total, COH will have thirteen expansions within the next couple of months. Another bonus is that these expansions are free |

WTS - a clue. cheap. I do not support stupidity or weakness. Sorry. |
Originally posted by ShastaHawk a game with an expansion a year (or more) would be eq and/or eq2. wow comes out with a new patch every 3 months (which is the equivalent of a COx issue). COx comes out with a new issue every 4-8 months. COx's last issue was november? i12 isn't on test yet, once it hits "open beta" on test, you probably have a month before it goes live. sooooooo, may at the absolute earliest, which would put this issue at 6/7 months? wow has had the burning crusade expansion. COH had the COV expansion. yes, expansion. marketing did a horrible job deciding to market it as a separate game and they've since made it free to get both red | |
