Have you ever dreamed of surviving a direct strike from a nuclear weapon? Well that is exactly what you can expect in the Issue 23 content update for City of Heroes. on April 4th I had the opportunity to sit down with Matt Miller, Melissa Bianco, and Jeff "Arbiter Hawk" Hamilton of Paragon. Jeff was responsible for the work on the Magisterium Incarnate Trial. During this sit down we conducted a play through of the pinnacle raid experience in the Going Rogue expansion.
The raid finds your hero tasked with finally putting an end to Emperor Cole and severing his connection to the Well of Furies. There are four separate encounters to this raid. Initially you must destroy a wave of 250 reinforcements. Once the reinforcements have been dispatched you will have to face off against Chimera, Shadowhunter, and Pendragon in a Battle Royale. Each of these antagonists has unique mechanics. Shadowhunter will shift into a dog form. Pendragon will phase shift targets. Chimera will cast area of effect damage spells throughout the battlefield.
After the Battle Royale you will engage the Black Swan. Black Swan opens portals throughout the area that you should destroy before you damage her. All of these mechanics will prepare you for the final encounter with Cole.
Once you destroy Black Swan you will receive a new ability, Quills of Jocas. After witnessing a short cut scene and surviving a nuclear blast you will finally come face to face with Cole. You must use your newly acquired Quills ability to destroy the light pillars and sever Cole's link to the Well of Furies. There is a counter that will keep track of these on your UI. If you die, do not worry, you will go back to the hospital and after a brief encounter with the Dream Doctor you can teleport back in to the fight. If you are a City of Heroes noob like me just stick to killing the pillars.
Two of the more popular questions from the play session were
MMORPG.COM: Can you explain the Hybrid Slot?
PARAGON: The Hybrid slot is part of issue 23. There are 4 Trees: Assault, Control, Melee, and Support. They mimic things that are features of other archetypes. You can make yourself better at things you are already good at or you can gain access to features you would not normally have access to. Assault gives you stacking damage buff with every attack. Chances to proc and the damage types increase as you move up the tree. Melee can give you buffs based on the amount of enemies around you. These are point blank area off effect abilities. Control tree will allow you to mimic scourge, containment, or overpower depending on what type you pick. Support is a bit like all of the leadership powers rolled into one.
MMORPG.com: When can we see the Genesis slot?
PARAGON: The Genesis power slot will not be part of issue 23.
I was really impressed with the graphics in this issue. If I did not already know I would have never assumed this game is eight years old. City of Heroes has held up extremely well and the Paragon team has done a nice job bringing Going Rogue to a conclusion.
