City of Heroes Previews: City of Heroes Preview

Richard Duffek (aka Kunou) has been really hard at work playing City of Heroes for the past couple weeks (don't you feel sorry for him?) He finally stopped long enough to share some of his opinions and experiences with you!

By Richard Cox on April 04, 2004

Fun & Value:
City of Heroes will provide the player endless hours of fun and enjoyment reliving the superhero fantasies of their youth. The game is set up in such a way that it is equally fun for those who can only spend a couple hours a week playing and those who spend many hours each and every day playing. With the friends list and Super Group features it is easy to log in and meet up with your friends, go out and thwart some crimes and protect the city. With the lack of loot and equipment you don't have to worry about having the best gear in the game to accomplish everything. Without having equipment such as armor and weapons to deal with as you do in most games, you no longer have to spend hours camping for that super drop to finish off your great set of armor. Now you can use that time for more important matters like enjoying the game, playing with your friends and completing quests to advance the storylines. As far as value goes, City of Heroes is a very fun game and worth the current standard MMORPG monthly fee. The official fee for City of heroes hasn't been released yet, but assuming it will be around the industry average then it will be well worth it. Where else can you live the fantasies of your youth? This time around the arch-nemesis won't be your younger brother and the family dog, but it's still just as much fun as you remember.

Summary:
Even though City of Heroes is taking a huge leap in a new direction in the MMORPG genre, it pulls it off very well. It's nice to see someone break away from the typical fantasy/medieval or sci-fi themed MMORPG and take the risk of trying something new. And on top of all that, do it well. With so many MMORPGs hitting the market in the coming months it is nice to see one that is done as well as City of Heroes and still break away from the cookie cutter mold that most MMORPGs follow. Hopefully a lot of other game developers will use this as an example of the fact that you CAN branch out from what the public considers "the norm" in the MMORPG genre and breathe a breath of fresh air into the genre. Too many people feel that in order to succeed in this genre you have to base your game on what other successful games of the past have done. So if you're like me, and a lot of others out there, and are looking for something new and different to try, City of Heroes is the game for you. Drag up those old memories from when you were a kid and get ready to relive them, without having to deal with the embarrassment of tying a towel around your neck and chasing the family dog around the neighborhood.
