The Agency News - A Day in the Life of an Agency Intern

Posted by Jon Wood on Dec 05, 2008  | 5 comments in our forums

When she originally won an internship at SOE's The Agency through the Gamers in Real Life program, Julia Brasil had no idea that MMORPG.com would be tracking her progress, but that's exactly what our own Carolyn Koh is doing, checking in with the new developer on a regular basis. Today is part three.

Julia Brasil is the first winner of Sony Online Entertainment's Girls In Real Life scholarship which includes a period of internship at the game studio of her choice. Julia chose to intern at SoE Seattle to work on The Agency. In her last two weeks, she had progressed in level design to the 2nd phase concept art and the creation of unique objects in game. Still working on creating the nightclub Metamorphoza, Julia has been creating concept art of the space she has designed. At this stage, she takes screenshots of the space in progress and then paints over them using Photoshop.

ahh........

James Bond meets WOW?

If I wanted to walk into a seedy bar and fight I'd go down to the local corner dive. Where is James Bond meets Oddjob? Why not walk into the Boss's office and meet a henchman that does something like take off a top hat with a razor sharp brim and throw it at you? Or Bambi and Thumper, like Roger Moore met? Where is Man From UNCLE? Where is the IRA hit on The Royals from Patriot Games?

Are we slumming here? Going after notorious evil doers that live like tramps?

Can't we go after the bad guys that run the bad guy organizations, and live in 7 figure hideouts? The ones that have sophisticated security systems, video survellience, and don't hire thugs in unwashed wife beater t-shirts?

Must we bust the street pimp and pusher to grind our way up The Agency career ladder?

So much for roleplaying the days When the Lion Roared......

ahh.....

wow, Man from U.N.C.L.E. , who even knows that reference any more.

Great show, should be required viewing for sci-fi espionage mmog devs.

Napolean Solo and Illya Kuryakin were great!

It looks like a moth to me, but elegant. I kind of agree with the other concept artists, because, well, the first pic looked like the insect creature was excreteting the cabinet.

Actually, I remember something in a book about this situation. Where the 'wow' factor isn't the 'wow' factor intended. An example from the literature book was: "Her face sparkled like the face of a small-pox victim."

The response would be "Wow!" but not the kind of wow you were looking for. Lol.

Cool stuff though, look forward to the next article.

A Day in the Life of an Agency Intern - PLEAAASE!

It was already announced that this game was on hold until next summer.

Now are we suppose to jump up and down like a bunch of children with visions of Sugerplums dancing in their head just because Carolyn wants to write about Julia.

I can think about better things Carolyn can do with Julia --- and it would come alot quicker then any SOE MMO in development -any.

I can just see the action now......

You appraoch a guy hanging out in the bar with a big, yellow, exclamation mark over his head. He gives you the same quest that he gave the last 200 people that approached him today..."Take this highly confidential top secret "for your eyes only" document to Bill in accounting three zones away".

Either that, or he will ask you to go kill 10 henchmen in wife beater tee shirts and return with their badges of rank from the opposing organization.

Sigh.....all I want to do is meet a contact like Peter Lorre in Rick's American Cafe in Casablanca, or pick up a mission from Audrey Hepburn while having breakfast at Tiffany's. Give me an emote in which I can dance cheek to check with Jenny Agutter in London. Let me live the life of a sophisticated international spy.

Rather than that, we get number crunching dps accounting games which they call "role play". And ten year olds that yell out "head shot".

Sigh.....
