Message sent to you follows: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Greetings and welcome to another installment of the Divergence-Online newsletter. I must ask that you read this entire letter before discarding it at your earliest convenience. <BUSINESSSPEAK> It's no secret that our one and only problem so far has simply been the lack of progress as a direct result of our as of yet inability to procure solid and reliable investors for our project. </BUSINESSSPEAK> It's damn depressing to pretty much have a completed product in high demand; to be 90% there and unable to come the last 10% simply because of the lack of petty cash. Here is a small chunk of undiluted truth about Divergence: As far as the design and the overall plan are concerned, this game is nearly done. Dozens of factions both human and alien alike, barely any of which are even announced. Playable races already sketched, outlined, implimented and quasi-balanced. Hundreds of special abilities pre-designed and scripted ready to be cut and pasted into the engine. A gaming world just slightly smaller than the land mass of Sweden. The combat and crafting models in their entirety. A three-year story arch composed of 36 monthly and unique chapters. Bandwidth and hosting provider ready to go. 3d assets and animations for all playable and NPC races, factions, creeps [mobs], items, components, doodads, weapons, armor, everything ready to be chucked out at a moments notice. Voice actors on standby. It's all done. It's all been done for months upon months. We've been done with this stuff for so long we're even past Convergence and into designing a D-O universe console for nextgen! We just can't come up with the money we need. It's really as simple as that. It's rumored that Sigil used a team of 80 people and a budget of $20-22 million to make Vanguard; a blindingly bland bastard child of Everquest 2 and World of Warcraft. However we have failed as a business to procure the mere $170,000.00 we yet need to purchase our chosen engine license and pay the company responsible for 100% of the 3d assets (aside from fauna) in our game. Banks won't lend money because there is no tangible product and no record of sale (Duh it's still in development!) Individuals won't invest because there is no product to show yet (No engine = No product, once again duh). That being said, we've decided to shut down divergence-online.com effective March 26th until such time as i/we manage to squeeze enough nickles together to make this happen. We're only leaving it up until the 26th to give those who want to migrate their micromunities to other places to keep in touch. This decision was made simply after coming to the realization that since we actually give a damn about our community, in some ways more than ourselves, it isn't fair to anyone to effectively "lead you on". Personally I've grown to loathe logging onto the site simply because I don't want to unload my own personal frustrations and zero good news onto my own community. We know you guys desperately want some good news but realize that nobody wants it more than we do. We set a deadline for our previously mentioned investment partners of March 20th, and when that didn't happen, we abandoned those contacts permanently. Whether the DCN website goes down as well is entirely up to Darwa and his crew. Stainglassllama.com will remain up simply because we need to give out that address daily to other people. THIS IS NOT A GOODBYE! Several people involved with the development of Divergence including myself are not putting it on a shelf while we toil away in our cubicles and passively petition 1-3 people a week about investing in our company. No sir or ma'am as the case may be. Every single day including Sunday I and we are bothering people morning noon and night, businessplans in hand and yearly expected revenue reports beneath. We haven't said, "Well if it happens great. If not, well I can survive." Many people have sunk their lifes ambitions into this project and it WILL become a reality just as soon as this trend of investor-be-wary mentality comes to a close. The same day that grand event happens, this mailing list will be forwarded another letter like this one but to a very different tune and all I and we can do is hope that the community will still be there waiting and starved to death for a badass scifi mmorpg to sink every waking our of free time into. Until we meet again, SGL Dev Team development@stainglassllama |
