I hadn't even heard of this game before reading this thread.  Did a couple Google searches and stumbled upon this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=trpmoQnEDfA  Seems pretty cool and I really hope this guy succeeds.

What can change the nature of a man?

No offense, mate, just curious... Since T:R is your dream game, what made you think that D:O would launch before T:R? I´m one of those that believe that both games will launch, but seems clear to me that T:R will do so much sooner.

No offense taken, I get where you are coming from. (...) I will have a lot of time invested in The Repop n likely lose interest in Divergence (I have adhd when it comes to games... fingers crossed on repop). Do not get me wrong I hope and pray my money was not wasted and I do get to try this game and it is on par or better than the repop but it looks grim. I have been bunny hopping mmo's so much that it is almost a daily thing. Right now I am playing Tera simply for the enjoyable combat... likely to switch to single player games soon

Ah! Gotcha!  :)

I dunno... I for one I´m kinda excited that, also including the Face of Mankind revamp into the list, there are at least three indie Devs pushing it towards making Sci-Fi sandboxes. I realize that, at some point, they are competition and may cannibalize their playerbase, but on the other hand (and probably having myself to plead guilty of excessive optimism), I think that it would be awesome if the three of them could launch their games, and push a bit our beloved MMO genre in that direction.

It´s like it´s in the air: more and more players requesting their Devs to "Go Classic", sort to speak, and bring back some of the features that were rather common ten years ago. As if we are beer aficionados that, although won´t ever agree among ourselves whether or not Stout is better than Pale Ale is better than Lager, we are damn sure we are a bit fed up with so much frikkin´ diet drinks with weird fluorescent colors... and can´t help thinking that at least a few of the diet drinkers would actually learn to like good beer should there be some available. :)

(for the record: Stout is better, of course; just giving a simple example! :P)

If the OP's post is a dev explaining where things stand, I can't seem to reconcile the whole "it's 90% done, but I have nothing to show investors." That makes no sense.

If I'm misreading, please just let me know.

No you are not misreading. It is what happens when you make up bullshit faster than the speed of your blog post, which is the case for this developer. Anyway was thrown to this thread from somewhere else, I'm done here, good luck sperm glass camel, or stained glass llama or whatever, it sounds gross.

This could all be very interesting if the references to the original texts were available here.

To me Divergence is nothing more than vaporware or in my eyes a scam. I don't believe people will ever truly see this project be released. It just sounds too good to be true and I question why they've had an increasingly hard time to find investors for a project that's nearly finished. Divergence reeks just as bad as the whole Warmonger drama that recently came to pass a few months ago.

This confuses me greatly.

2013" We have money, now we need to make the game."

The loss of my $10 because they cant deliver wouldn't bother me. If its all a scam to get some free money, that would make me feel stupid. We will see in a few months If they can deliver something playable. And then decide from there.

Im worried about a dated design, dated engine...old code ect.

Plus, from what I saw, the guy just had a basic bump map world and a few items in it.  That's hardly more than a start point I guess.

Since this game came out of hibernation, in case no one noticed, gamers went from loving the games they play to loving to tear them to shreds and trash talk/scare potential players away.  This game cant just pick up where it left off and launch with a substandard combat system, game mechanics not fully fleshed out...there is no longer tolerance for "hey stick with us and the game will be whole soon" ect

I would kill for a scifi full loot sandbox...I want to see this do well...ive just been down this road before.  Seems that sandboxes are often high on promises of a better future and short on developers to make that happen.

So for this game ill give it a try in a beta, and if the combat is bad, if the game is missing content and systems...well if it appears the game is going to be like all the other sandboxes...im just going to pretend it doesn't exist.  I know not what beta is for but im sick of paying for betas and having a beta where nothing changes for the better before launch.

I really hope a large budget studio does the full loot sandbox, or an indy studio does it right for once.

I know it's hard to find reliable information about this game, but I can tell you the engine they are using is completely new they trashed the old one.

Secondly, I heard they will be releasing a prototype with combat in it for this summer to get the kinks worked out before their next crowdfunding campaign begins. Right now that's where they are at.

Lastly, the developer has promised he will not be making any sort of launch before the main features are finished in every sense of the word. I know this is a promise many make and fall on, but I think if he were the type to release unfinished games, he would've released his old version many years ago to try and get some excitement about it. Since that hasn't happened I'm putting some faith in him.

(It sucks you dont wanna see it)

Golly Gee, someone rezzed my old thread...

And I am surprised this is still going.

Well people, before getting all excited, you all better investigate the past as to what happened.  There is more to this story than what I posted years ago.  It all started with posting of rendered scenes supposedly from the game, of which they claimed, but were not.

As for today, hopefully they learned from their lessons to not make over the top promises with nothing to prove it.  Which is why I made this thread.  What I would ask to see of what is being shown; is that from a game engine or an actual MMO platform and with what features.

Also you may want to check with other developers of how it was like dealing with them.

Then decide for yourselves.

Now back to my grave.

And that is why...

Conservatives' pessimism is conducive to their happiness in three ways. First, they are rarely surprised -- they are right more often than not about the course of events. Second, when they are wrong they are happy to be so. Third, because pessimistic conservatives put not their faith in princes -- government -- they accept that happiness is a function of fending for oneself. They believe that happiness is an activity -- it is inseparable from the pursuit of happiness.

Got news for ya, they are alpha testing already.    This game will be the the ultimate sandbox mmo.  Even better than the original swg which I was a 6 year player there.  This is the one game that will truly allow you the complete freedom to actually be in a world simulation.

Based on what evidence? They were "alpha testing" years ago too. Before they scrapped the engine 4 times and wasted a ton of money and time. How much money are you going to throw in this pit?

I did battle with ignorance today, and ignorance won.

To exercise power costs effort and demands courage. That is why so many fail to assert rights to which they are perfectly entitled - because a right is a kind of power but they are too lazy or too cowardly to exercise it. The virtues which cloak these faults are called patience and forbearance.

After doing a little research, it's easy to see why he's had so much trouble getting anyone to work with/for him or get any kind of investors behind him. Great game concept, bitter human being. It's sad, but I wouldn't play it if it was finished tomorrow.

Well... I don´t know the guy personally, so I cannot comment on his bitterness.

But if the game was finished tomorrow, what would his personality matter?

(Don´t get me wrong: I fully understand your point that his personality may prevent him from getting enough help to finish the game... but, should he manage to finish it, IMHO players will only care if the game is good or not. I mean, Steve Jobs is said to have been the most tyrannical boss ever, but lots of people seem to like their I-pads and phones! :))

I agree with you 100% based on your example. I was trying to be polite when I used the word "bitter". While Steve Jobs was quite frankly known by many to be a complete tyrant to his employee's, I don't think he ever condoned violence against anyone or attacked any particular segment of society or peoples beliefs. The views held by the dev in this case are very radical and probably contribute to no one will back him financially. I don't know him personally either, but I'll take his own word for it from his personal FB page. I've been known to not exactly be PC myself, but I do not condone violence against people or property.

Well... I suppose this may be a bit off-topic, but my point was: if as a consumer we think a product is good (but whatever defintion of good we may have, and in this I think we can agree that milleage varies greatly in each case), most of us are quite happy just using that product.

I mean, it´s not like we can audit the whole production line of every product we use, in order to check if at every single step everybody involved in the process is treated kindly and fairly. Of course, most of us would stop using product "A" if we were to learn they are involved in some sort of unethical/illegal practice, but most of the time it´s just not humanely possible to check everything. Which means that, should we find a game we like (again, with "like" being variable due to personal tastes), I somewhat doubt any of us would stop playing said game because the Dev says something we disagree in his FB page.

(I´d even be willing to bet that, should the game be good, we wouldn´t even care to see what the Dev has to say in any other venue other than his Dev Blogs and forums; we´d be too busy having a blast with the game! :))

Of course, the above assumes that there actually *is* a game, which in this particular case remains to be seen; and a hell-to-work-with Dev may of course make it very hard on himself being able to get his product to the "finished" line.

Yep, looks like more smoke and mirrors, like the photoshopped pics he posted to this site initially 8 years ago. For a community alpha test where is the thread exclaiming how awesome it was? Where is the actual community?

Also, while none of us may know him personally you can get a great sense of his personality and level of professionalism from many sources, not the least of which are these very forums. Steve Jobs was a loathsome human being, but he had the fact that he was a marketing genius going for him. When he died how many people thought Steve was the best thing since sliced bread? Ethan however, likes to blame others for his own shortcomings and spit hatred with his advertising. Besides which, he has made technical claims that he has shown no evidence of backing up. There is a reason why he has been compared to Appleton instead of Jobs afterall.

I did battle with ignorance today, and ignorance won.

Quite right.

Its never their fault, any fault is due to circumstances beyond their control or because of someone else, or because of this or that...

MMO's are a service, not a product; which require a good level of customer service.  That attitude will be eventually directed towards players.

And I wonder how well this can really perform against Face of Mainkind with its recent kickstarter...

And that is why...
