Aion News - December Address Reveals Paid Services

Posted by Michael Bitton on Dec 23, 2009  | 45 comments in our forums

The December community address for Aion has been published on the official Aion website, shedding some light on the plans NCsoft has for Aion in early 2010.

The biggest changes coming to Aion in early 2010 will be the addition of paid account services, such as plastic surgery, name changes, Legion name changes, and even gender changes. Pricing for the aforementioned services will be revealed sometime in February.

Beyond that, NCsoft is being tight lipped on the exciting features they are planning for Aion in 2010, but they ensure us they'll be eager to talk about them some more when they return from a much needed vacation in early January.

You can read the full December address here.

Its cus they are feeling a little sheepish, all year some AION players (and others) have been trolling the wow forums with "paid services.. will never happen in my game".. eek

But lets be honest it looks like ALL mmo's will be going this way, with more and more mmo's going F2P and having some success it could spell the end of the subscription based MMO in a few years replaced with paid4services and vanity shops.

For those with comments about "cash shop" and so on. It is a common practice to add extra service for small fees. Actually, I cannot remember a game where changes like appearance, name or sex could be done free (unless you simply delete your character and roll a new one). Again – it is more then common for any western game too. Save your hate for real game-braking thing.

This is an example of what i just done get. Why would anyone be glad to see a game gone?  I would guess you do not play the game and I do not play the game, but there are those that do, what pleasure can you get from those who play losing their game?

In GW you dont earn skills, you go to a skill vendor in game and you buy them with gold. They have only started selling skill packs after factions and nightfall because, honestly, there are just too many of them.

Elite skills are the ones that take some effort, and the effort is only in googling where the boss that has them is in the world.

The challenge of GW is not in the grind but in the gameplay itself.

Um.. You are half right. The end of subscription (only) games is here, because games are now offering multiple tiers of play. They usually consist of : Free (limited or not), Microtransactions, and Monthly Fee. Expect to see every major game to offer all three options, and stack them (so you can do monthly + microtransactions).

But lets be honest it looks like ALL mmo's will be going this way, with more and more mmo's going F2P and having some success it could spell the end of the subscription based MMO in a few years replaced with paid4services and vanity shops.

Subscriptions will never go away, simply because the more popular games run by the bigger companies (such as ncsoft and blizzard) know they can get away with having a steady income with subs and double dip with a cash shop. How they do this is by adding cash shop items after the game has a solid player base. They know no sane player would sign up for a new game  blatantly charging them twice for the same content, and they also know that no matter how angry you make a veteran player, they aren't going to pack up and leave if you ninja a cash shop in under them after they have a couple months of their life invested into the game.

If you thought wow messed up the industry bad... just wait til the next generation of mmoers that have grown up in this cash shop environment and doesn't understand that they are being taken for a ride start outnumbering the older generation. This is going to be the standard, and in a year or two, our "cheap" form of entertainment will no longer be so. It can cost an excess of 50 dollars or more a month to get all the basic features in a standard f2p mmo and companies "stuck" in the subscription based system are really motivated to figure out ways to get that kind of money out of their players.  Some ambitious players spend in excess of a thousand dollars a month.

The services being planned will in no way shape or form be justified by the prices they will charge, and we all know damn well they didn't spend any time or money developing them. Things like surgery tickets are already in the client as IN GAME ITEMS. Are we all suppose to forget about the character editor we used to make our characters at level 1 and pretend ncsoft is doing serious work that deserves extra payment when we want to make a cosmetic changes to our character? Uo showed the world that every possible character tweak can be automated in game with in game items if the company really wants it. Indeed, most of the stuff our hard working ncsoft staff is pretending to be working hard on FOR THE NEXT 2 MONTHS are already in the game files.

Oh look, it's one of those stupid children who think cash shop items are the norm and a good thing. It's a common practice to add poison to milk in china too... I guess that justifies it going by your logic! You can change your sex and appearance for free in atlantica online, a huge cash shop game, given the right conditions. For fucks sakes, the plastic surgey TICKET IS AN IN GAME ITEM. THERE IS NO DEVELOPMENT COST NOR TIME. IT IS AN INGAME ITEM. IN GAME ITEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEM. WHY ARE YOU SO STUPID? I bet you also think ncsoft will be adding new content  "soon" as well.
Declining numbers I think not. My server is growing daily. The game is healthy I can assure you.
All servers are light and with most having one side controling the abyss uncontested says differently. Oh right, fanboy talking. If you love the game and ncsoft so much, why don't you actually play the game? Then you would know how things really are.
It s paid services, not a shop.
It's not a penis, it's just a dick! Just suck it! Semantics.

This is such an obvious cash grab. It's sad. Not because it's so pathetic, but sad because ncwest has failed for the final time. They are all going to be laid off and ncsoft is going to pull out of north america. No blade and soul for us all because our market has been mismanaged for 10 years straight.
please go to school. GW is not made nor operated by NCsoft, they are the publisher, Arenanet has all the power and responsibility.
I don't know where you two are going with this. The current heads of ncsoft are the arenanet people. So basically, there is no excuse.

Services and Vanity shops will never replace subscriptions. Take the Lil KT and Panderan Monk in WoW. I bought both for ~20 USD. That's roughly a one month subscription fee (ooo, only 5 bucks more; yawn). Now I have them and I won't need to purchase them again...so what about next month?

The only way MTs can work in the long run is when they offer gear...useable gear. Vanity only goes so far..and character changes only happen ever so often. But gearing....that's an on going process; especially if new content (and gear) is release every few months.

Like tier gear in WoW. 5/5 sets are release on average every 3 months. That's $44.85 they could charge for the ability to purchase the entire set; working out to $8.97 a piece. It's a safe bet that most of the players would have bought at least one piece prior to the 'Badges for Tiers' change, which only started with T9 (talking full sets not 2/5, or 4/5 [Hero/Valor]).

So, yes MTs will probably rule the MMO-world....but it won't be the MTs you are seeing now.....

Its important to note the kind of changes offered here with  these microtransactions  dont  effect game play.  All this stuff is cosmetic only even though Aion is very cosmetic in nature it doesnt hurt game balance.

I'm sad anytime an MMO embraces the evil of microtransactions, usually I jump on said games forums, make sure I register my utter disgust at the decision swiftly followed by a cancelation of my account, in this case it would be difficult because I'd already cancelled my Aion account due to the game not being my cup of tea anyway, but I'm sad for those still left playing.

Of course at the moment it seems to be the usual 'out of game' stuff, which I don't mind so much, but it tends to be a slippery slope. I wonder what odds I'd get on them introducing a 'pet store' within the next 12 months ?

LoL I will be the first to admit that Jotull is mostly a Troll, but in this case he is right...I mean have you ever actually read the forums? Heck read the in game chat the mods were flooded by complants when that guild was doing open pedo RP, and the Mods basically said it was Ok. It's Okay because the mods are really to lazy to care, this is Koreas game not the rest of the worlds...their audience matters ours don't unless it's to squeeze cash out of via a Item shop.

And anyone that says the game is flourishing in the west really needs to stop exaggerating, last few times I was on Ghost town, saved for a few kids seeing how much outrageous profanity they could spam in chat…oh and the bots of course still plenty of them.
