Has anyone brought up the fact that if Blizzard has that symbol trademarked and NCSoft reproduced it in a game...such as if a publisher reproduced an image in their magazine...that they are liable for a lawsuit for unauthorized use.  Even if they did not realize that it was in their game.

@ Vladkov I dont see why you can't use the "Swastika" Hitler wasn't the first one to use that symbol. The Japanese have used it and many other cultures have as well.

The Swastika used by Hitler is not the same as the symbol used by a few other countries. And you're thinking China not Japan.

So no, Hitler's Swastika should never be allowed in a game.

Because....?

Christianity has killed more people worldwide than nazis were able to kill.

And yet their symbol is allowed to show in public.

Christianity does not say to wage war, people do. Perhaps you should ban the symbols of men and women they put on toilet doors the world over?

Religion... along with Christianity in the past has certainly waged war... crusades? Jihad? Religion is definately the source of more evil than good in the world if you look at it over the last 2000 years.

I would argue that politics and greed have killed more than any religion ever has.  WW2 was not a religious war.  Ganghis Khan killing millions on his march was not religious.  African tribes killing every man woman and child in enemy tribes was not religious, Stalin's eradication of "enemies of the state" was not religious.  What ever anyone say governments, leaders, politicians, and 'organized groups' commit more evil in this world but only religion gets the blame.

The swastika will very likely remain linked with Nazism for as long as history endures in the western world. It is now the closest thing to something symbolic of evil, and rightly so, as the unavoidable association with so called "Aryanism" has made what was once considered a harmless token of good luck, representative of the absolute worst in mankind. The symbol's own history in the west has been superseded by the memory of the Holocaust, making it's use utterly inapropiate and offensive.

While it's use is officially banned in Germany and a few other countries in Europe which were occupied during World War II, it is by no means illegal to use in most of the western world and it's use remains more widespread than many people would think. It's use it's not banned in my country (Mexico) where unfortunately it's not an uncommon thing to find.

The swastika in the east remains a different thing altogether, although it should be pointed that the traditional symbol is rarely the same as the one once used in Germany (Buddhist use a rounded symbol which faces the oposite way and is complemented by dots for instance). However the radicalization of the Arab-Israeli conflict has encouraged an unacceptable trend towards apropiation of Nazi regalia in countries like India or Iran (Which in farsi means "land of the Aryan") that makes it's use inapropiate even for people originating in these regions of the world.

Just to make things clear...

Wow bitter much that USA is the best country in the world?

Based on?

According to UK, USA is 9th.

I would think the UK would know better than to try ranking other countries in any way. They have their own non-stop scandals to deal with and frankly have become just a pale shadow of the empire they once were. It's a different world and monarchies don't much fit in anymore.

If you actually took the time to read the page provided, you would've noticed the research result was provided by Legatum Institute.

Any other opinions?

It's why it is held in such esteem and why it's generally (except by you, apparently) known as the foundation of the fantasy genre.

Ironically, the piece of crap online game that bears it's name is one of the last I'd call "true" to the original works.

Okay...I'm gonna stop you right there. Elves, Dwarves, Orcs, Dragons, Undead, Magic, Curses, and almost every single other possible thing you can think of in Tolkien's works are from ANCIENT MYTHOLOGY from around the world dating back upwards to a thousand years of more.

The reality of the matter is that the entire fantasy genre is nothing but an expansion upon ancient Norse, Germanic, Egyptian, Japanese, etc. mythology and culture.

I get sick of people saying "Oh, that was just ripped off from Tolkien" because quite frankly, he stole it as well.

And just so ya know, I love his works. Definately prefer the Hobbit over Lord of the Rings though. Frodo was a whiny emo teenager. Bilbo was awesome.

I never once said that Tolkien's works weren't based on mythology. What I said was that D&D is based on Tolkien's works specifically, this is acknowledged by the creators themselves many times. And if there is any doubt that the vast majority of fantasy-based games exist today due directly to pen-and-paper D&D than you have your head squarely up your own ass.

Ancient Mythology itself is based on popular superstition. So it is hardly original in and of itself.

Uhhhh- WoW came before LOTRO and saying that Blizzard ripped off Tolkien would call into question all high fantasy material printed after 1940, including Everything by TSR Publications, Robert Jordan, and George RR Martin to name a few.

As for which country is the "best" in the world, this depends on the criteria used. The US is certainly at the top of some rankings.

And? Pretty much everything you named is some variant of an inferior Tolkien derivative. Robert Jordan is a total hack, I read some of his Conan stuff. I'm glad Robert Howard died before he got a chance to see his Conan bastardized in such a fashion.

As for GRRM, I tried reading his Song of Fire and Ice series and was bored to tears by the second chapter of the first book. I went right back to my holy trinity of awesomeness. (Tolkien/Howard/Lovecraft)

that sir, i did not know, however, its ridiculous that its possible,  for example you could also upload a swastika? LOL

the swastika has been around for almost 600 years it still occurs today in the modern day culture of India, sometimes as a geometrical motif and sometimes as a religious symbol; it remains widely used in Eastern and Dharmic religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism.

This thread is great. We have the "do some research and leave my Aion alone you meanie-head!" fanbots, some weird guy who came in and accused WoW of copying Tolkien, and a "greatest country in the world" debate with some U.S. hating. Oh, and throw in some swastika discussion.

That symbol originated in WoW.  Not sure why anyone would care...it's a cool symbol.  If a guild wants to use it, so?

I'm also confused how someone can, on one hand, make use of the term 'Asian cash shop' as a disparaging term, yet flip out on others for not liking Aion only because it's an Asian game.   Starting to wonder if a lot of people just get baked before they post here.

Unfortunately, popular opinion isn't on a first come, first serve basis.. There are far more people who understand the swastika shaped symble as exactly what it is most common as. The nazi swastika.

Wow now that's some pyramid.

Nothing new though, as far as I remember every thread about legion emblems and their freedom on fansites ended up like this (nazis, WW II, etc), it just happened that someone wanted a new reason to call Aion a "WoW clone" and failed, you should mourn the loss of the WoW player that copied the Lordaeron symbol (the origins for this symbol might even come from Warcraft lore...).
