I can spot a pile of sh!t when walkign through the yard and AION is not one of them. AION was an AWESOME game and felt like a western style MMO only with the awesome art style of Asia. The game is absolutely gorgeous and is VERY quest driven unlike most of the asian market MMO's. This game is meant to target Western players and it did a damn great job of it. When questing I did not feel like it was a chore to complete any of them, they were fun and engaging. The combat animations and skill animations were fluent and badazz on top of doing some sick combo's and DP moves. This game is nothing like any of the other NCSOFT games so please don't be as ignorant as the guy with the backyard analogy. This is a MUST BUY IMO, I know I am. |

Might be a fun game, might have some cool features but any game that is "Very quest driven" is not for me unless the quests mean something and they are different for each player.

Very helpful. I now know not to purchase this title. Many thanks. "Many nights, my friend... Many nights I've put a blade to your throat while you were sleeping. Glad I never killed you, Steve. You're alright..." |

The OP is basically asking if this game is going to a major BOT grind-fest like other Asian MMOs often end up being. If so, I can tell you right now that it will be a huge disappointment in the West. Most of us don't seem to have the required attention span for endlessly repeating the same boring tasks and succeeding at games of this type. |

Yeah, we are more into repeating the same old prejudices in every single aion post. |

If I watch an Asian movie the fact it is not a Hollywood film is sometimes part of the attraction. If I buy an Asian MMO I want it to be different from western style MMOs. Since my favourite MMO ever is FFXI I hope that Aion is more Asian style than Western style. I would prefer any localisation to be as superficial as possible. |

Originally posted by Ephimero I plan to try this game and I am not necessarily saying that it will be a grind-fest. I was merely clarifying what the OP may have meant since his concern that the game might be a grind-fest seemed to automatically imply that he was a 'carebear'. I will always reply when I feel someone is being unjustly labeled for making a fair criticism of a game. My only point is that some (not all) other Asian MMOs I have played have felt very repetitive to me. This is something they should be criticized for and it does not make us carebears because we don't enjoy that level of repetition. Still I think this game looks very good and I play to give it a shot. Especially since most people say it is not as grindy as some others... |

So..go play a asian grinder then. Not every quest is go kill 800 swamp men and come back lol. The quests were really fun and not at all like chores. If you don't like to do quest then go grind...what else would you like to do to gain xp? I would love other means to gain XP but you don't see that in any games besides maybe dancing in a cantina somewhere in tatooine. |

Heh, I like this part of your Sig "The Themepark Method of making MMOs is structured entertainment, akin to a puzzle." Sandbox games are not made to hold your hand, give you direction, give you a reason to play or automatically reward you. It's there to give you a choice in what you make of it. The fun is that what you get out of it, not what it Pigeonhole's you into. For you that maybe the case as well as others but others feel different. Point being i see this mmo appealing to westerners and making a very good playstyle. |

If you don't like questing or grinding mobs. You can always gather, and craft to max level, seeing how both of those things gives you exp. |

From my time playing Aion I've never really felt like I was "Grinding" where as in WoW I felt that way at level 6 when I got to Brill, but I kept with it anyway. My point is that not only Eastern MMO's give you the feeling of grinding, Western ones can too. Consider this, how much of localization is changing quests to be diferent and not just changing the text of what NPCs say? My Guess: None of it.
EXAMPLE: Quest in wow has you gather 60 tusks off Quillboars in the Barrens at level 15 around. THATS not grindy AT ALL is it?
Well just about every MMORPG has a grind of some type. To keep people playing you have to have repetitive elements whether it be questing, instancing, or even doing PvP. The trick is giving people enough variety of grinds and/or making the grind(s) fun enough that people don't even notice they're doing one. And no, I don't consider the 60 Quillboar tusk quest to be even close to a grind compared to leveling in a game like Lineage 2 (a-la the aformentioned 3 billion Lizard Men). MMO games would be pretty cool if it weren't for the people. |
