Fury News - Auran Shuts Down

Posted by Keith Cross on Dec 13, 2007  | 13 comments in our forums

Auran CEO Tony Hilliam has posted an announcement stating that Auran, the developer of Fury is closing its doors.  The 70 people on the fury development team have all been let go, with a small team remaining to maintain Fury.  He also assures everyone that Age of the Chosen, Fury's first update, will launch as scheduled on Friday.

The Directors of Auran Developments, the company that employs all the Auran staff, have today called in a Voluntary Administrator (like Chapter 11 in the US). All the staff were dismissed today. Despite earlier reports, staff will be paid for all their work to date, their annual leave entitlements, redundancy payments and long service leave.

Whilst this is the end of Auran Developments, it is far from the end of FURY and Trainz.

Trainz is the world’s leading rail simulator and has a community of more than 250,000 registered users around the world. It is published in dozens of countries and there are many products in the market today. The bulk of the Trainz team will continue to work on current projects and these projects will be released next year.

With Fury, we built up a team to make a world beating game and sadly we have not reached our goals – yet. Our performance to date has meant we could no longer fund the 70 strong dev team. However, FURY: Age of the Chosen will be launched as planned Friday 8pm GMT. We have put together a small but committed team to continue developing FURY on an ongoing basis. This core team, as we announced last week, are a passionate group of people committed to making FURY a success. We will be releasing bug fixes, content and feature updates on a regular basis and in fact they will be more frequent with our new agile team.

Well, they spent MMO bucks on a FPS game... I've been saying it since I learned what the game was going to be like.

I feel bad for the employees who lost their jobs during the holidays, but the writing was on the wall (from where I sit anyways)... MMORPG PvP is just not the shiznit everyone seems to think it is, and this game design even removed the thing that saves the others: PvE.

Was a hard thing to swallow, paying monthly for a game that was buggier, slower, and smaller (at least all the instances I was in) than your average free to play multiplayer FPS shooter (well, free to play once you bought the game). They went to free-to-play, but too late. They marketed it like an MMO, and it wasn't.

"will be more frequent with our new agile team". Isn't that always the spin... 'more agile'. Sure, management gets harder with more people, but if more people can't produce more work than fewer people, you have a problem with MANAGEMENT. Heh.

They had to bail on it before release because they knew they couldn't afford to go that way. And that was the first sign of the fury apocolypse.

That's bad. They go Free to Play then shut down their shop in a week.

Problem is you can't compete in a MMO market with a FPS wanna be.

It is a small niche market and you just can't spend the big bucks on development and expect to survive.

Sorry to see them go, but it was easy to say I told you so.

PVP-centric just does not work (attention Darkfall devs)

You have to cater to us carebears if  you actually want to earn some money no matter what system you use to get it

I know EVE is alway brought up as a PVP game that works and earns money but most people - 91% - are carebears - mining, trading and building to support the other 9% in 0.0 space

I didn't keep up with the news of Fury, but didn't Fury offer a million or two million dollars worth of prizes for tournaments?

The end of Auron = the beginning of Fury , that`s why this business decision was made  based on budget.

Auron is being sacrificed in order to put everything into Fury and Trainz , it came down to one or the other and they decided to continue developing Fury , so thats why when they tell you Fury isn`t over thats what they mean .

They have a long term sustainable budget to develop Fury which has already been stated and the team they have in place now is currently going all out with whatever it takes to improve the aspects of the game that players have noted as being unappealing .  They will be re launching the game tomorrow with the new upgrades as planned , offering the free to play option , and going full steam ahead with any changes that players feel are necessary . They have an open dialog with the fans and community and are very dedicated to implementing new ideas based on player input according to what everyone feels will improve the game.

Probably the best player/developer interaction I have ever seen in a game .

Ok....fist the "legend" of the perfect MMORPG game will never exist...As for Fury and all of the games of its kind...
1 : A PvP based MMORPG is for now fresh (70% of the players are tired of grind fests...)
2 : Level system missing =
Best to go is a leveling system that takes you MAX 1-2 weeks to make ur char to the max lvl and maybe farm for items.
3: A PvP based game has not to be with "perfect" graphics because not all can afford 2GhzDualCore and 2Gb ram...It has to be fast paced and not heavy(i dont mind the good graphics but not the perfect ones that want a ton of RAM)
4: It has to be a Faction and Guild(Or Clan) based
5: And most of all to be real and not to offer overpriced month fees or fake rewards from events

This is my opinion of the good PvP based game...Fury is 40% of all this

True , the perfect game does not exsist , different people like different things.

You level in Fury through pvp

You get loot and coin in Fury through pvp

   There are factions/clans in Fury

Subscription fees are optional in Fury

That's quite foolish to say that PvP games are not desired, especially based off of Fury. This game should have been a box buy and F2P from the start just like any other FPS. There is no world to it like you would expect in an MMORPG. Most players that are interested in PvP either want it for realism's sake or for epic battles (sieges, city battles, etc.). People want to feel like they can change the world and while PvE could offer that, you will never find the same difficulty in fighting mobs as you will players.

If DarkFall ever releases, as feature rich as promised, without bugs, then you will see a popular game. Never near WoW popularity because the PvP market IS smaller than the PvE market. But nonetheless, a sizable amount.

That story isn't exactly true, but not far from it. While Auran Developments is closing, it is only a fraction of Auran. Auran Games, the section that owns Trainz, is still operational which, for me, is a good thing. However, I know a few good people that were not rehired by other sections of Auran, and for them I send to them my heart-felt condolences.

Fury isn't really my "cup of tea", as I'm more into PvE, rather than PvP. Yes I know that killing the environment isn't as good as killing other players, but it's what I prefer. I was shocked to hear that Fury didn't do as well as Auran had originally thought it would though. It seems that all the hype before it's release was precisely that...
