Auran Games has announced that Fury will be introducing a new free to play free to download business model with the launch of Age of the
Cockpit, Austin, TX - December 10, 2007 – Gamecock Media Group and Auran Games today announced a new Free to Download, Free to Play option for their fast paced arena combat game FURY. The new business model will begin with the release of the first major free content update “Age of the Chosen” on December 14, 2007.
“FURY was built around giving players options that suit their play style and their wallet,” said Tony Hilliam, CEO of Auran. “With the AotC update, we are introducing a new player category called “Chosen”. As one of the Chosen, players can access all game types, equip all weapons and unlock all 400 abilities – and they can play as much as they like absolutely free. This is a fantastic opportunity for players to jump into battle with their mates and discover the frenetic pace of the fastest RPG combat ever. Chosen will earn less gold and essence, and will not be able to trade with other players.”
“Chosen players can purchase game gold from the FURY store or upgrade to “Hero” status to earn more Essence and Gold. Retail stores sell the “Hero” status pack, along with a free month of “Immortal” status, so this is $30 value for the new price of $19.99 (in US stores). As a Hero or Immortal players can unlock abilities faster and purchase better gear, but the matchmaker then ensures they are playing against other players of similar skill and rank.”
FURY: Age of the Chosen is a massive free content update that introduces two new game types aimed at the new player. “Carnage” throws two teams into battle with the aim of returning blood tokens to their base faster than their opposition. Blood tokens are gained from killing bots, not other players, so the action is indirect competition rather than head to head. The 1v1 Elimination game type means games will spawn faster and matches are more evenly balanced.

Never have played this game but its nice to hear they've added a Free trial type thing. Reminds me alot like the Free thing in Planetside. Although I'm playing DAoC at the moment so I can't be bothered to play it =(.

This is too funny. Way to go Auran. Thank you for showing us all how "successful" ( snicker ) a pure PvP game can be.
Bad game just got worse.
I dont see how it could have gotten worse. The game is actually pretty fun, just not a ton of content. Even though the game is somewhat categorized as an MMO, really its more like an FPS. Once I looked at it that way, the game became a bit more enjoyable.
*Only thing that sucks for me is that I purchased the game at retail price. I doubt there will be any compensation :/
Send 'em an e-mail. Maybe they'll give you a dollar off your first gold purchase.
Its great offer and I think it brings a lot of people in. Even in beta stage this game was better than the most f2p games (if not all). Also current players will have more victims to play with ;)
This is quake with swords and spells with a built in gamespy... and they wanted you to pay monthly for it. Heh....
Wonder why they had to switch. It certainly isn't a MMO. Why its even listed here is beyond me. Its a FPS with matchmaking software built in.
yeah, no idea why it is listed here - perhaps it is a legacy thing, or perhaps having an auction house etc makes it an MMO ... i don't know!

Well, there is a full functional economy for one, and the city is MMO in the same way Guild Wars is.
It's really very similar to Guild Wars but without all the crappy PvE stuff, and far more intense combat. If you have ever enjoyed pvp in an MMO you should give this game a try, there is also the 2 week free trial going on.
Anyway, the whole payment model confuses me now. So basically, the trial now becomes a permanent and ongoing one, instead of 14 days? And if you want to play the game decently, you need to buy ingame gold? What happened to the monthly fee? Does that still exist?
Besides, why does Auran market this game as free to play now? Didn't they market it as free to play right from the start?
They call it Free to Download, Free to Play now. It was "only" Free to Play like GW from release.
Basically, now you don't have to plunk down $50 like the rest of the suckers,.err...I mean "customers" did since launch. But you will have to buy your gold and skills from the item mall to keep up with the cheaters,err....I mean "paying customers".
I wonder if this means places like Walmart will pull the boxes from the shelves? I'd be seriously upset if I paid for something only to find out it was a free download.
Yeah, right. Auran ain't gonna tell anyone to stop selling those boxes until the very last minute before the "free" part becomes official. And they'll probably forget a few afterwards. After all, the RMT bit on a game with nothing but "You smacked me, I'll smack you" going for it won't last very long. In 6 months ( being very lenient here ) this game will be a memory. Unless Counterstrike or Unreal Tournament are making you pay money for ammo nowadays.
Maybe you should ask yourself : Why did they choose to make it F2P? Too many people playing it? They already made enough money on it ?
Heh, I don't know a whole lot about Fury, but as a business major I have never heard of making "enough money" on anything

The key reason to create a new class of player is that in this game, the more players the marrier. Less queue times, more balanced matches, more people to talk too. Since release and even before this has always been the biggiest problem limiting the fun in the game, and they also have a fair amount of space on the servers for these free players.
So the free players cost then nothing, and they will potentially buy the game when they realize it's alot of fun.
Also, if you guys read the article a bit more, you'd see that there is going to be 3 classes of players: Chosen, Hero's and Immortals, one for each amount you paid. So the game will still be sold in stores, and people buying it will still have great value. The key limit to the totally free accounts is that they can't trade with anybody at all, and they get less gold and loot then Heros from matches.
Also, the price of the game was dropped to 30$. Overall these guys really know what they are doing and probably among the best develloppers of all MMOs.

So basically, the new payment lower class will get a heavily gimped eternal trial. What I don't understand: why didn't they just keep the old 10 day trial?
I'm pretty sure you still get the old trial for hero if you want, just after it's up you can go back to Chosen and play for free for as long as you want.
Ha I knew from the first time I played in Beta this would go Free2Play eventually.
Actually it only releases premium status, nowhere does it say you will actually buy items,gold and skills from an item mall, similar to games like Tibia and Runescape.
Try reading the part I highlighted in green in my last posts. Also, they've been selling gold and skills from the beginning, even when they were charging for the box.
Every free-to-play game's slogan should be:
