Point and click allows everyone to play, while FPS allows some to play.

It would disappoint me greatly to see this turn out to be another SWG NGE Kinda game that keeps my whole family from playing it.

Here is the honest problem with that.... the nge was not the most difficult version of star wars galaxies to play. Actually the CU was with the need to macro almost required to compete even in pve combat. The NGE was point and click, especially after auto targeting was in place. The classes had about as much depth as the shallow end of a swimming pool. Crafting was easy as you no longer needed to have the best resources or anything to build server capped equipment. So people assuming that a non point and click game would be liek the nge should hope this is so. Even a 4 year old could play that.

The honest problem is, if the game is rated Teen, it is not meant for the whole family, it is meant for people 13 years or older. If you design it for an entire family, No one gets to "die", try explaining death to a 5 year old. And so in order to avoid boredom you need a dynamic and robust combat system that does nto simpley become who has more hp and who has better gear. While a straight "fps" system would also not accomplish this neither would a straight point click. thats why i think it needs to be an MMORPAG, (Massive multiplayer role playing action game) utilizing a combat system that will allow for the same boss fight to be radically different everytime, and makign the player actually have an impact on the outcome of their characters actions.

It IS meant for the whole family if I decide it's ok for my family to play it. I think you can explain death to a five year old by telling them the truth when they ask. The game is rated, I was warned. All Im saying is, my family can't play SWG anymore, and neither do the rest of the players that quit leaving that a game a barren wasteland. NOT because of violence, because of mechanics. Even a kid in a wheelchair can play point and click. If SGW is anything like that, we won't play it either. IF SGW starts out being FPS they will not have the problem SWG had but I don't think it can fall within the realm of MMORPG it is just another Planetside or Tribes. THATS FINE, Im just saying I wont play it and neither will most of my friends and family. We play these games together (4 CPUs in the house) Generally on friday night as PART of our family night. (Of course most of our toons are lvl 10 or lower LOL) We were all hoping to play this one for a change of pace because we like the show. If its FPS its NOT MMORPG its MMOFPS. Advertise it as such. But until the games release this is all speculation. Im osrry I mentioned SWG. I knew it was wrong when I did it. However, that game IS now fps and it is unplayable. I THINK thats because they took a point & click game and changed it entirely. Its like the game is in perpetual beta. I don't want another SWG, Planetside OR Tribes. I want a good game my family can play together. If SGW is not it, then so be it. We will pray for STO.

dude star wars galaxies is far from an "fps" they never put in collision detection or shot placement. SWG has an auto aim and auto attack now, in all honesty it is really no different than playign every other mmorpg. It is gear based and takes no skill. Look at it now, witht the exception of the barren wasteland you described your family could probably have a great time with the new content they put in, the new instances and space content could provide hours of fun especially if you get a gunship.

As for my reasoning on the game, if you make it to easy and gear based you will lose the same amount of players as if you make it fps, because the stargate IP is not that slow. What i saw in a video though looks to be somewhat like what i was thinking. through use of a cover system and such the action of the show is preserved and it doesn't become a circle strafe fest.

On a side note have you thought about tryign Pirates of the Carribean online, i heard that was a very simple game with a decent IP that your family might like.

After getting back on it a killing a coupla things I think you right and I see your point hat it auto targets and what not. STILL you have to have the cursor on a person to heal them and to fire the weapon. The ease of play is no longer there and WHILE great, the space combat has never been all that GREAT. If Stargate IS fps I wish it luck but we wont be playing it.  And Its not that we NEED a very simple UI, I don't think EQ2 UI is all that simple, but my  family CAN play that together. As I've said a kid in a wheelchair can play it and get the same satisfaction as I do. PLUS these games have  Millions (In the case of WoW which we  don't much like) of players. IT WORKS.

I will check out PotCO, we're not really into pirates and things but if the kids enjoy it than its fine by me

Yeah man, i can see your point, and your right that the cursor has to be on someone to heal in that game ( soemhting they are working on). And just so you know im not one to be an asshole about disabilities i had a friend of mine lose her arm in the line of duty, that used to play with me, we were able to make it work even with the NGE's system for a long while ( thank you commando the ultimate point and click profession) but eventually we switched to eve, since it could all be done with the mouse. Maybe this little insight will help you to understand my stance on SWG.

All that being said, if you are plannign on doing what i think you are doing ( forming your own team with your family) it could be easy to have everyone fill a role even if there is an action combat system, the tech specialist (Carter) i would assume will be more point and click than a soildier like teal'c or Jack.

Oh yes I think your right. We love the show so much we may give it a (albeut 4 games 4 subs a $300) try. But at that cost, its really hard to take a chance on something not all the family can play. But I will share your opinion with my family and we can think on it. TYVM for a new look on it.

My wound is deep... so is a well

i think this game should have FPS couse then you coul'nt just press tab all the time and once a sniper cath you in their sights you got a clear hs on him......

on many other Click and point or whatever you call it i just press tab all the time and we end up shooting or fighing each other in close combat...

until 1 wins when he got 100 hitpoints left from 2k hitpoints

i like FPS couse then you would always have to be focused:) and not just press some random buttons or just click on a guy then you character does the rest:( what a fall

but i guess it is gonna be like all mmo's.... never seen a MMOFPS anyone could point me towards one?

I am not a "kiddie", I enjoy mmo's and I enjoy FPS. I can't imagine a gamer NOT liking FPS games, unless you just suck at them.

On that note, even though I REALLY enjoy fps games, MMORPG's with FPS controls always bomb.  And I want SGW to suceed so let's keep FPS controls out of it ;p

this will most likely be like tabula rasa i cant se how this would work with clicking number 1 and 2 as it then it would require no skill whatsoever kinda makes the whole stargate thing pointless and my self i wont buy this game if its point to click and so wont many others i predict this game will fail

there has not been a successful mmo that has incorperated FPS style controls, and there won't be.

imagine this, you are lagging, trying to aim at a monster and your bullets are not registering because the monster is not where you are looking at.. sorry, but FPS controls in an MMO are ignorant, even age of conan's semi-fps ranger mode is freaking stupid.

Planetside worked quite fine with me. Since it didn't have the absolutely best graphics in the world it was a matter of toning down the settings to get nice, lagless play. It's hard to make right, but it's definitely fun.

This game will most likely be a Tabula Rasa/Rainbow Six: Vegas mix. I really can't imagine a shooting RPG with a point&click ability spam-fest at all. It takes all the fun out of the Stargate (multiple enemies, get behind cover, hold the trigger, spray&pray you don't get killed in the wave). One thing that's pointing in the direction of Tabula Rasa is that they said a LVL 1 player who'll make good use of tactics and cover will be able to beat a LVL 20 player for example.

I really can't wait to see this game. If it doesn't go the WoW way this will maybe be the first MMO for me that has monthly fee.

he said successful. planetside was hardly a hit.

FPS style MMO's are always a niche market. It doesnt fit in with the typical MMO gamer's playstyle. Why do you think Star Wars Galaxies is still dead ? That game is cleaner and has more content than it ever had, yet the 80% that left are still gone and nobody new has replaced them. They could bring back all the professions that they dumped and people still wouldnt come back because its a quasi fps game

Wrong.

You're fully *assuming* that people against it "simply lack the skill". That's a very presumptuous and, frankly, arrogant statement to make.

Some people, believe it or not, simply do not enjoy that kind of battle system in a RPG... how skilled they may or may not be at it makes absolutely no difference.
