too bad. An mmo that i really hoped went to a hybrid model, instead they are just shutting it down.....

EDIT: in the first link Carrie says the contract ends and both Mythic and Games Workshop agreed to part ways.

I really hope a more competent company gets a license of the IP and makes a better version of it.

Just like SWTOR, WAR is one of the few mmos i really wanted to play but isnt worth the subscription in any way.

Damn shame....

I loved warhammer and would still be playing it if it had population.

Just goes to show you what happens when you roll out a product with so many massive issues.

RIP.

One of the few MMOs I was actually excited for before it was released.  I only left the game due to actual bad pvp'ers (people who disregarded capture points or flags and would rather play deathmatch during the scenarios).  Oh well.

It had it's hayday .. 800k players .. then under 100k within it's first year... then it fell off the radar as a game not worth reporting.. anyone know how many players it has currently?

Ah well .. thanks WAR for adding achievements to WoW and public quests to GW2 ... :P

I really loved my Sword Master. It was one of my favorite classes in any game.

I suppose this closure points to the fact that developers really need to "nail it" out the door or have enough money to invest in order to revamp things.

After launch it seems that Warhammer really couldn't gain any traction.

Game with massive potential but released with glaring issues and developed incompetently after launch.had a great time until the issues and lack of direction overcame the fun.

I'm surprised it didn't turn F2P with EA's starting to be favored  nickle and dime model TBH.

WAR was fun at first, but it was a shallow experience that really didn't offer the longevity that Barnett & Co. touted, and the game never really lived up to the potential of the IP.  Games Workshop have most probably been counting the days until the end of the license.

The devs own history (story) shows the reason for war's downfall. They worked more on concepts then the game. That will doom any I.P. I bought the collectors for this game on promises and promotions of what the game would have, in turn to see things removed totally from the game or not work at all. During this time, patches followed but the game went stale.

They didn't like the way pvp was going so they aimed the open world more to Q group fights (I believe due to the horrible net coding) and on and on it went. The only people that drove this game too it's failings are the exact people that worked on it.

Damm, but i can not say it was unexpected. Been playing since the beta and even have the massive CE sitting on a shelf. It was a flawed game sadly and it never really got the momentum it needed (partially due to Paul painting a very strong image of the game only to have to go in and remove stuff pretty much each month as the game got closer to the deadline.)

But it was really fun to PvP in and it had some nice ideas like the public quests.

This is one Shadow Warrior that will always value his time with the game, but the fact that i have not played it for over a year sort of speaks for it self.

This game had some of my favorite classes of any game as well - loved my Chosen and DoK.

Unfortunately, EA and Mythic stopped all real development on the game about 4 years ago.  It was doomed at that point.

I've actually been waiting on this announcement, just wondering when the contract for the IP was up.  There was no way it was going to be renewed, given the tiny bit of money the game is making.

Well this does in many ways make the DoW series and the Blood Bowl game the only really good games that had a GW license attached to it.

i remember me and like 6 of my Army buddies bought this games collectors edition and played it like madmen, only reason we stopped playing it as our main game was because we had a ton of other friends who were playing WoW still and we took a break from WAR to play Wrath of the Lich King.

We still played WAR on and off when we werent raiding or doing Arenas in WoW we found the WAR population was dwindling. I think with better timing, and better developer support this game coulda been a contender as one of the bigger MMOs but it seems like the company was only taking half measures with it, and sticking as closely as it could to WoW in design.

It is indeed sad to see this happen.. Very skilled people losing their jobs.  Hopefully the company has other places for them.  War was actually a pretty good pvp game.. It just needed more people.

Sad. I would play WAR if it had ever gone F2P. I bet a lot of people would have.

Man, you must not be into the actual table top side of things Warhammer. If so you'd know that the owners of games Workshop are trying to sell the company. That said you aren't going to see another Warhammer fantasy based MMO in the near or medium future. Maybe mid 2020s into 2030 IF MMOs in general as still around.

GW is cutting fat right now. They lent their IP to the recent Space Hulk game, if you can call it a game, and to the 40K MMO in production. That's it. Aside from that they have ceased production on their Specialist line of miniatures/games (Mordheim, Necromunda, Blood Bowl, Battle Fleet Gothic, Epic, Warmaster) and after the new year in 2014 and their obligated "run time" of the new Hobbit stuff, they are canning that line two.

You'd best latch on to the 40K one and pray it launches, cause that's going to be about it as far as anything new computer gaming wise with a GW license.
