Charging for this in any way shape or form is robbery. Interesting idea, but it's own limitations hold it back.

Good, if you're willing to put up with its quirks. Doesn't get much developer attention these days.

A very interesting game that is sadly ruined largly by poor design decisions and being very very unfriendly to new players. Starting out you can only make the most basic things, and to move onto anything above banging two stones together. (Even that to a degree as well.) Requires you travel to schools to learn how. That may not sound bad, but those schools take nearly a week of real life time (Actively playing) traveling over the game world to find. So you will spend a week (I remind you of actual playing time.) running over a massive landscape before you can really even start to play the game. Great concept, terrible implementation, and S...L...O...W starting out.

While the lack of combat makes this seem a lot different, you have all the basics of a good MMO: Character development, solo and group challenges, coop and competitive gameplay and a chance to actually influence the world

I used to play A Tale when it was free way back when it was just "A tale in the desert I" Since then it's improved big time with a lot more stuff to do and a lot more players. I had fun for a few weeks playing the game, upping my skills, and traveling around. As well, the community is pretty good from Day one and still through today. Nice people, at least the ones i met.
Unfortunately, the game is all about skill-building and nothing else. There is no violence of much, which is a nice change.. but after a couple weeks of grinding it really gets boring and sometimes frustrating. If the game was free, I would HIGHLY suggest it, but unfortunately it isn't and in my opinion.. while a good game.. isn't worth the monthly.

ATITD is an indie MMO and that makes it better in some respects than others. I'll start with the bad though - It is run by ONE man called Teppy. Everyone else volunteers. Whether this is because he can't afford to pay them or because he's greedy is unknown (however, it does say how much people love this game.) He had the vision to start this unique project, but he doesn't have the organization or the common sense to pull it through. Whether he truly cares is a mystery as well. His actions over the years have disappointed a lot of paying customers. Why do they stay? This post from the forums summarizes this succintly: "Yeah, ATITD is a fantastic and unique game. I'm an explorer primarily, like to build stuff, and I enjoy the occasional art test (when inspiration strikes, anyway). I really like the idea of self-goverment-- being able to pass laws that change the game world and so on, and the idea that the world is a blank slate with a few basic rules for people to work in and with systems to discover. I think it's great that there's a chemistry system hidden out there for people to discover as technology is unlocked. I like the art tests, even with their limitations. Heck, I LIKE the limitations-- pushing those boundaries is where the interesting stuff happens." This game takes "community" to a whole new level!
