A Tale in the Desert News - Myrmecology Mini-Game

Posted by Keith Cross on Mar 10, 2009  | 3 comments in our forums

The folks at A Tale in the Desert have announced the addition of a new technology mini-game revolving around the world of ants.

A Tale in the Desert IV is an MMO based in ancient Egypt, where citizens
strive to build a perfect society. The game features a large number of
systems (mini-games), also called technologies: Cooking, Mining,
Blacksmithing, Ecology, Glassblowing, Wine Making, Beer Brewing, and much
more. Each of these systems is quite complicated, and requires Egypt's
citizens to work as a whole to figure it out.

Today, eGenesis Inc. is glad to announce the release of a brand new
technology, involving a system different from anything Egypt has ever
seen: Myrmecology (Ants!).

Since this is a new concept in A Tale in the Desert, we are not able to
say much about it without ruining the fun of the Egyptian people who are
currently trying to figure it out. Everyone is however welcome to join
Egypt in exploring the world of the ants and contributing to unlocking our
Myrmecology tech.

This is why I hope an independant game such as Darkfall does REALLY, REALLY well.

Sooner or later, companies will notice other projects such as this, that don't have mass appeal but are worthwhile gaming pursuits nonetheless and can be quite viable financially, if given an infusion of capital by a dedicated base.

Smaller companies like this need other small companies to succeed, regardless of genre, to further innovation.

I hope this company can stay afloat long enough to see the tides change in the MMO world from "bigger is better" to "smaller is smarter".

These ideas look really good in an MMO, and can only be expanded on in a positive manner.

Good luck with your new concept, ATITD!

I keep returning to ATITD. I've played briefly in all four (yes four now. MMORPG.com should update from ATITD III to ATITD IV) tellings. My problem before has been the endless grind for basic resources. That keeps getting better however, which means a lot more time can be spent working on all the different challenges than in the first or second telling.

The major strength of ATITD is all the various game mechanics. Each new resource or test introduced got a different mechanic. It varies from simple "click a button to pick", through large cooperative efforts where many players must dig for stones or stir a cement vat together, to complex mini-games where real player skill is required or competitive games where it is you against the other inhabitants of Egypt.

I've watched the global chat these past couple of days when the commonity as a whole is trying to figure out how these new mechancs introduced with Myrmecology works. It's the first time I've been around when something brand new has been released and it shows a cooperative community like I've never seen before in a MMOG.

I'd strongly recommend MMOG addicts to give ATITD a try. It's a small download and got a free trial and while it is something different in the MMO world, it still got all the fundamental stuff: Nice setting, character development, challenging solo and group content and a chance to actually affect the game world .

That was the only thing prevented me to play longer than the trial.

Have you tried the 4th telling? The UI has been improved a lot since it started, much better now. You should give it a try :)
