The Chronicles of Spellborn was a fantasy MMORPG developed by Spellborn International and published by Frogster Interactive, Mindscape, and Acclaim. The game focused on quests as the main method of character advancement with the intention to avoid traditional level grinds. Players could select from the two races of Human and Daevi and choose from the three class archetypes of Warrior, Mage, and Rogue, with several sub-classes to specialize in.
Players' characters' skills became more powerful with leveling up, although players could only choose from several skills at a time to utilize. There were 1,000 quests for players to complete in addition to storyline quests that advanced the game's plot. Special Ancestral Quests moved individual character arcs forward and allowed players to step into Spellborn's history.
The Chronicles of Spellborn featured fluid combat with a first-person targeting system and combo sequences to execute. Players could also learn skills of other archetypes at the game's upper levels, and weapons in The Chronicles of Spellborn were customizable with interchangeable sigils. Originally a subscription-based game, The Chronicles of Spellborn later adopted a free-to-play model. The game was shut down in August of 2010.
Playdom only recently acquired the publishing rights to The Chronicles of the Spellborn from Acclaim. Earlier this week, a server outage caused many to wonder if the game had been shut down for good.
