Roma Victor is due to launch at the end of this month. Today, we have seven new screenshots from this game. Well... If I ever feel like returning to my Atari 520, then this is what I will get. But I don't.. so I wont. I have worked with 3D Studio max as pure entertainment. Built some mechs for Bad Karma in its days, did a few commersial banners for FASA interactive to use on gaming sites, but purelly as entertainment, not professional in any way... 10 years ago... I could do better graphics than this. Easy. I have not installed my 3D Studio in five years now, but I am sure I could install it at this moment and without warming up, beat this graphics (Look avatar, last thing I did... about 5 years ago)

And you PAY those guys?!! Amazing. I say fire your modellers, then hire a few 14 year old hobby modellers and they will do better for free.

Making great graphics, and making low poly models that will allow people to play a game with others from around the world in one world without a slideshow is a completely different thing.

And as far as the, "You pay these guys" comment, very few people are payed at RB.  And those that are (maybe 6 people), are payed what you'd expect to make as a student worker.  You have to have a passion to work on something like this for as long as these people have...and do it for free or very little.  (All the directors have never got a paycheck from this game since 2000, including the president KFR)

We may not be pretty, but we've got content.  If people can get past their eyecandy needs, they'll find quite a game here.  And by all means, dont believe this is how it's always going to look.  You think we're going to have our graphics guys (2) do nothing after release?  ;)

I am sorry, but the "low polygon" discussion is not even up for grabs. I know all about low polygons, when I played around with 3D, one of my tasks were to build an Archer (mech) with 500 polygons or less. I did it with 499, it was extremly close to original drawing, then I added 180 polygons to create the 40 missiles in its missile bays to animate a full missile salvo. It STILL looked better than this... I am pretty sure you have passed 500 polygons for a human model, animations today use a whole lot more polygons than ten years ago when I was doodling. That is kinda why I added my timeframe...

I know graphics is not everything, but I sure wish people would stop using polygons as an excuse for bad talent. It works on people that do not know anything, but its a darn insult to peoples intelligence.

It is nice to hear that you work for free, it explains a whole lot more about why it looks like it does. But do you not even feel yourself, that maybe it might be an idea to tell those modellers to step up a notch? It is 2006 now. Little big adventure (1997) had better graphics than this, and it ran on computers that would fit in todays wristwatches. Be honest to yourself and your future clients... You CAN do better, if you just focus on all parts of a game, even the visuals. The question that really hang out there is: Do you even WANT to do better? Does not seem like it.

Anyway, enough from me. I am sure you will find your costumers on your chant: "It might look bad, but... We got gameplay... promise". And for some, that might be enough... I just get a bit sad when people are satisfied releasing inferior products, just because they can't be bothered to think about quality.

Horrible graphics, and graphics do matter.

But more concerning is the revenue system which promotes elitism by selling in-game coin directly. So whoever pays more will have more and be more powerful.

If you dislike this game so much why waste your time complaining about it? im sure you've got better things to do, like, play WoW or SWG. the "better" games. WW2 Online has poor graphics but that hasnt stopped thousands playing it for many years now, and the gameplay is not to be found anywhere else, its got realistic damage models and everything and requires more brains than brawns to capture towns. I think this will be the case with RV, its giving us a type of game we havent seen before. I dont expect money will fulfil every needs for a player, money cant make a hut magicaly appear can it? not every resource can be bought off vendors, you still need crafters, money makes life alittle easier on the player in certain areas of play(hire NPC guards etc) thats all.

Why waste time complaining about it...blah, blah, blah...easy. Because the game is here for public review and public comment. Therefore, people are entitled to comment on it. It's fair game, like every other product featured on this site. Pretty damned simple.

Are you trying to say that only people who love this game to death should comment on it?

For the mere fact of crucifixtions, it gets at least a 6 in my book.

I typically turn most gfx down so me persoanlly coupld care less. I model too as a hobby, they look ~500 poly.  If that keeps the lag down hey im happy

Bottom line is: If it isnt fun it will fail. So we'll see.

Personally I like the graphics for some reason. I hate the cartoony look of WoW, maybe it's the textures which seem high resolution in RV. These graphics make the game feel 'real' to me and there are plans that your diet (yes you have to eat in this game) will change the appearance of your character. The trees and in future the ground textures are done by SpeedTree http://www.speedtree.com/html/speedtreert.htm so those look very convincing. Don't forget that this is supposed to be a simulation so there is only so much artistic licence allowed.

Anyway, it's the gameplay I'm looking forward to most of all. Open PVP with skill based combat, realistic (and complicated) crafting system - build pretty much anything, no-subscription - buy as much or as little gold as you like, hireable guards/workers/merchants. Then there's the very rich backstory and lore :P There's so much realism built in to this game which sets it apart from the other 100 or so on this site.

It's exactly the game I was looking for.. at first I've been worried about the graphics, too.
But I think they'll be quite ok... let's wait for release and test it.

I love the complexity of the crafting system, the realism and that it's now "r0xx0r ub4r" wtf game like many of the others.

I'm in the same thought process as you hYpe.
I've played the games with the supposedly amazing graphics, and it's the same with MMOs as it is with FPS in my opinion; they've sacrificed the hours spent on story, content and gameplay in aid of hours spent on the lovely graphics.
So be it, some people need to pretty graphics to make it ok to grind on the same mob spawn for 12 hours.

As far as I can remember reading (I hope this isn't breaking the NDA), the floor covering is turned off at this point, because RB got offered a better floor covering system than what they'd developed. And so they're working with that new system now for release. Thus the pics have no floor covering.
And floor covering, thick grass, shrubs etc, makes a whole lot of difference to the look of the environment imo.

I know the models don't look like the almight EQ2 plasticine models, and I don't give a toss.
As long as the gameplay is not rigid, and I can be a true doctor of sorts, I am 100% all for this game.

Time will tell of course. I refuse to get hyped about a game until well after I've played it nowdays... hehe.

You're more than welcome to check the renders.  http://213.208.119.110/news/media/index.php?type=2&start=0  We're definately not lacking in tallent.  Although being only part time, I'm sure he'd like to spend more time on RV.  And of course we want to do better...I dont know why you'd be implying that we dont...Hence my last paragraph in my previous reply.  "Inferior" is an opinion, what is inferior to one person is superior to another, we can see both sides in this very thread.  You're more than welcome to sit back and wait for the game to look better (unless you're not intrested at all in any part of it), as it obviously will, but with no instances like most modern MMORPGs, and nowhere near their payroll, I'm afraid we'll never match their eye candy level...we'll just have to focus on gameplay instead.

Why are people still complaining about Roma-Victor? I would like to say that the new pictures you see are not in high-res and none of effect are on.  This happen to alot of MMORPG games. You wont see it goodie  eye candy like Kanoth says for now since they are currently getting RV working and fixing everything to get GAMEPLAY work cause its important then once everything is taking care of then the graphic will be all turned on and increase to max which it might be not reallly eye candy (uncertain) but be very close.

ALL GRAPHIC PICTURES YOU CURRENTLY SEE ARE CURRENTLY TURNED OFF, ETC..NO EFFECT. NO HIGH RES. LOW RES It will be all turned on in time and you'll see a big different.

They fix the game, add stuffs in-game, bug fix, etc. then they will turn it on. thats how i see it.

So onces everything is done then they will turn it all on from high-res realistic, all effects on, etc. as it will be different graphic. It's take time so please be patient.

Gameplay is important.:)

Why do this? Why short-sell a product like that? That's nuts. It's like trying to sell a car with only three gears and telling prosepctive customers that they'll get the full five gears in a few weeks, but try and like what you see now...

No, it doesn't make much sense.

Anyhow, I hope you're right. I hope I order and download the game and find out what you've just written wasn't the words of a hollow shill. I really do.
