The folks at EverQuest II have posted an article on one of the new features that will be coming to EQ2 with Game Update 52, player authored books.
One of the upcoming features for GU52 is a new system that will allow players to write and distribute their own books in the world of Norrath. These books look and act just like the current books in the game. You can hold them in your inventory or place them in your house or guild hall for other players to read.
These user-written books can be obtained from a crafter and will start out blank. Any player can write in a blank book, but as soon as you write the first word you become the author of that book. From that point forward, only the author may edit the contents of the book.
The book window will display an “Edit” button whenever you read a blank book or a book you have authored. Clicking the edit button will reveal controls that allow you to enter text and see the layout from page to page.

A feature every game should have.
Definitely a very inventive feature to add.
Maybe they should add a Bestseller list too? :)
See devs....it is possible to incorporate truly creative ideas into an MMO, it just takes a little imagination.
Well done EQ2 devs!
Holy crap! That's actually very similar to what I had suggested to them, instead I wanted a guest book for my house so people coming to buy stuff or visit could leave notes. :D
Very awesome!!
How much does SoE charge for each book? I mean in their RMT dollars.
It's user-created content, and by the sound of it I think it's the sort of thing where you walk up to someone and hand them a copy of a book. I'm sure it costs a small amount of in-game currency to purchase the book, but that's not much different than buying a regular book, I'm sure.
Finally, my Curt Schilling/Queen Bayle fanship will finally come to see the light of day!
Or maybe not...
The devs of EQ2 are actually really good on adding small creative ideas into the game,
My guild is currently working to move into a large fotress outside Freeport, there is a lot of fun and easy social functions of the game that makes it worth playing.
Very funny but you would actually be dissapointed to see what they sell there, most of it is furniture, housepets and social clothing. Nothing is really useful or affect the gamebalance.
Worst things are XP pots but since you get a bunch as veterans awards and the fact that levling is so fast nowaday (up to 60 at least) makes them just slightly useful for people with more money than time. I was not happy about them from the start but they never had any impact on me whatsoever.
The books will not be sold for RMT but you could make your living as a writer and sell them for cash. Still, I wonder if anyone can copy a book or just the author? Hopefully just the author.

It's not their own creative idea. It's an idea borrowed from Ultima online. You've been able to write your own books in UO since the day it was launched back in 1997.

Nobody said it was original. Only creative. I don't think there's ever been a truly original idea for many, many years...
