i never played it and am looking for a fantasy MMO. WoW, for some reason didn't click with me. So, i am thinking of giving this a try.

So, how is the community? Is it active enough? Also, what about the game's content updates, etc?

I just couldn't get into it but the free play option just got rid of the item restrictions so it is worth a shot.

I believe it is updated still with a fairly recent expansion.  I am looking forward to answers to this as well.

content updates are 3-4 times a year, like many mmos

the game is older so it's top level heavy

there's currently a welcome back promotion ongoing until oct 15 so it's more active than it usually is

Freeport and Antonia Bayle are both popular servers

if you want to pvp, goto Nagafen server but EQ2 is largely a PVE game

i think the EQ2 community is friendlier than many mmos

I currently have an EQ2 account and you can make a level 85 character until Oct 15. EQ-2 also has the absolute MOST content out of ANY mmo on the market today as a matter of fact. EQ comes in close 2nd. If you are looking for quantity in things to do then go with EQ-2. Great crafting system as well.

on a side note. The graphics are ok. The graphics engine however at high end settings can be quite unplayable. Set it to low to medium settings and you will be fine. Depends on the zone as well and all the loadables like Guild Halls. I have a high end computer and run it just under High settings. However right now I am not playing because I accidentally deleted my just made level 85 Necromancer. Bah! I can't undo it either... oh well.
