Okay, so my wife and I tried EQ 2 about two years ago, but ended up stop playing due to the heafty system requirements. We had to play the game using near minimum settings, and honestly the game ran and looked awful. However, I'm building some new pc's for us so we can try some different mmo's, as we're quite tired of WoW. But Im wondering if the new pc's will be able to handle EQ 2 well, and hopefully allow us to see it in all it's glory.

Here's what I'm probably gonna go with:

AMD x3 Black Edition

4 Gig DD3 1066 Ram

ATI 4850 or Nvidia 250

What kind of performance can I expect out of that level of machine? I reallize I could get better hardware, but i'm working with a budget.

Thanks.

With these specs you will be able to run it at maximum settings, EQ 2 is 5 years old and your machine will be a little above gaming average so don't worry about it, you will be fine.

Alright, cool, thanks. Yeah, it is a pretty old game, but I seem to remember reading somewhere that SOE designed the engine and graphics and whatnot to last for years to come, so machines would be pushed to their limits trying to run this at higher settings. But I'm glad to hear my future machine will be able to handle it.

You should be fine with that. I run EQ2 on my laptop with an AMD 64 x2 (2.2ghz), forget the exact video card but the systems about 2 1/2-3 years old so its not top end, and only 2gb RAM on Vista, and I also run it on my work PC which is pretty similar to my laptop specs, though a slightly weaker gfx card. I do have to keep the settings fairly low, especially in some situations, but fortunately the game now offers enough performance/gfx options to allow you to tweak it just enough that you can maximize the stuff you do want to look a bit nicer, while turning down a lot of the unimportant crap that bogs you downa dn you dont really notice much difference anyway. If you do run into any issues, or just want to improve it slightly, i also reccomend getting software called GameBooster, by IoBit. It helps manage and turn off background apps and other stuff that you dont need while gaming to help it run with better fps & stuff all with the click of a button, and then when youre done just hit the switch to normal mode button and it will reactivate all the background & apps. I find the software really useful for some games, including EQ2, though it seems to have less impact on some games.

Also since you played 2 years ago, you wont run into some of the same issues as before. They have made some improvements to the engine and are continuing to improve with future updates. For exampel i believe they are updating to a new shader system which is supposed to help with overall performance while also making things look a bit nicer.

Spelling and grammar do matter.

I find your lack of real-life skills disturbing.

You should do fine with this.  I use:

AMD 7850 x2 Black Edition (upgraded from 4800+ yesterday)

4 Gig DDR2 800 Ram

ATI 3870

I stuck with a fast x2 instead of a quad because while EQ2 now makes some use of multi-core, it wasn't really built for it; you want your cores running as fast as possible.  I don't bother trying to max the graphic settings either, just going for a good look.  So it looks fine to me, and the slow-downs that I do encounter are most likely due to the fact that I play on the most heavily loaded servers: Antonia Bayle and Nagafen.

Oh and this: player shadows can now be run by the GPU instead of the CPU.
