City of Villains News - E3 Look Forward

Posted by Dana Massey on May 11, 2006  | 10 comments in our forums

Laura Genender finds out what's up with City of Heroes/Villains, including when players will finally get their wings.

Yesterday at E3 I had the opportunity to sit down with Matt Miller, Design Manager for CoH and Serdar Copur, Producer at Cryptic Studios. With Issue 7 just around the corner I had plenty of questions for the duo.

Issue 7, or I7, brings the City of Villains up to date with City of Heroes. Most of the content added is for the villain side, including 10 more levels of game play, a new 40-50 zone called Grandville, and new power sets. Both CoH and CoV players also have access to a slew of new costume choices and base items, and the new 40-50 PvP Zone, Recluse’s Victory. Note on costume choices, while wings aren’t appearing in I7, Miller told MMORPG.com that they will aiming to have them ready for Issue 8.

even in a big SG (rank #4 on the pinnacle server) the prestige costs and prices for some items are MASSIVE. In 6 months (or since CoV came out) our SG has been working hardcore on our base and the whole thing cost us a little over 12 million. However 1 large defence room (we want to place to defend out bases vault) is going to cost 6 million, rarely have our group ever made 200,000 prestige in a day so you are looking at 2-3 months for 1 small upgrade. They need to increase prestige generated or lower the costs. I run my main in SG mode 100% of the time and have 420,000 banked since November. Most normal guildies range between 150,000 and 250,000 and with a guild cap on 75 and most people having 1 or 2 alts, bases are seriously expensive.

Yea any info on the proposed scrapper and tanker powersets? They've been 'in the works' for months and months now. Scrappers and Tankers are the only AT's that have yet to see new powersets.

Oh and wings in I8? SWEET.

um, wings... i6/cov came out in halloween.  it's now may, 7+ months later, and i7 still has not been released.  so you're looking at MAYBE christmas if i7 comes out now, next year if not.

COx's saving grace was new stuff every three months.  made killing the same three mob-types a little less dreary.

now it's going on 7+ months between issues.  wow.  someone high up in the chain of command needs to be relieved of his/her duties and hire someone with a clue.

pvp in this game is laughable.  i6/cov only gave heroes pvp zones.  i7 will be the same.  won't be seeing tons of heroing until possibly i8.

pvp is like the super group bases and skills - an afterthought poorly done (sorry, skills are like lvl 50 content -- too difficult for the devs to do, so they ignore it).  poorly done even after these devs put things like this into test servers, where tons of players do the dev job of testing and critiquing a game.  shame the only thing the devs listen to is *this is broken, i can't use this attack at all* and ignore the non fanboi player comments.

i'm sorry, cox is still a game of vastly wasted POTENTIAL.  until you get devs that can come up with post-lvl50 adventuring; then, you've got a game that only fanbois will continue to enjoy.

the other thing is the sameness of the mobs.  is i7 going to add new mobs?  new mob TYPES?  i don't think bringing over differently dressed gangbangers to/from cov/coh is doing anything positive, just making the two games more alike and a grindfest for nothing.

i can't wait for another super hero/villain game to come out from say marvel or dc, or maybe something in a Spawn universe.  maybe THEY will get it right and listen to the customers, not just the fanbois.

i want to love this game.  i really do.

it's entirely too boring and same same over and again, the big reward you get at lvl 50 is to go make ANOTHER character and do the SAME EXACT missions/areas again, and again and again.  i honestly don't see how people have 4-12 lvl 50 toons.  that means they've taken out like 500 bazillion skulls, outcasts and hellions.   must have some macro that runs while they watch movies or something?

Your right on this one. CoH/V's patch cycle is indeed slowing down dramaticly. I7 will likely be out in a month, and thats more then 6 months since the last. Granted it does include a couple new zones and powersets. From dev quotes from CoV beta, it takes them a month alone to do one new power. It takes several months for a small team of artists to do an entire power set. Granted these new sets in I7 aren't actually new at all.

"pvp in this game is laughable.  i6/cov only gave heroes pvp zones.  i7 will be the same.  won't be seeing tons of heroing until possibly i8."

I'm not sure where you base this. I've pvp'd a lot since I6. Granted I'm not level 50 with my main yet. I7 does infact include a 40-50 pvp zone. Sure it'll take a bit for villains to get to 50 to compete, but not till next year lmao.

"pvp is like the super group bases and skills - an afterthought poorly done (sorry, skills are like lvl 50 content -- too difficult for the devs to do, so they ignore it)."

The announcement of the 'skills system' being dropped was a sour note for me as well. The game dramaticly needs something for players to do instead of fight, and the devs know it. Hopefully they'll figure something out by this time next year for I9 :p

Clearly your the type that see's the fun at the finish line, not during the race. I dont know how anyone could call CoH/V a grind fest. The only way it could become LESS a grind would be to name it WoW :p I mean if you think THIS is a grind, you should try games like EQ2 or SWG. Now THAT is grinding.

"i can't wait for another super hero/villain game to come out from say marvel or dc, or maybe something in a Spawn universe.  maybe THEY will get it right and listen to the customers, not just the fanbois."

I'm not a fanboi thats for sure, my account with CoH/V is random at best. One month I dont want anything to do with the game, another, I'm loving it. But I can tell ya now, any other super-hero type MMO that comes out wont have ANYTHING on CoH/V because CoH/V is just that much better then nearly every other MMO out there. Trust me, I've beta-tested or bought nearly every single major MMO since EQ and theres but a handfull in the same ballpark. CoH/V isn't perfect, what is? But it's damn fun.

Now I think your just ranting for the sake of ranting. I dont know about anyone else, but I haven't had to kill 500 bazillion skulls, ourcasts or hellions since about level 15. I did probably kill about 500 though :p But they died 5-10 at a time ;)

I am looking forward to try this new issue.  I am well aware this might be my end for CoV, or it might mean I will keep going on.  I dunno...but the wait become longer between new significant patches and I am still bruised all the way back to Issue 2!    I am feeling more and more like I feel toward old EQ, thinking about this game in a past tense (not that I master my tense in english anyway).

Still, this is the best MMO I have ever played, guess that's just mean how spoiled I am now!

The release seem to be alarmingly close to Heroes of Might and Magic V, which can be either a blessing or a curse, as it may delay the moment I will play it...but it can also give them more time to smooth some stuff...yet...I know myself...my interest is a LOT more focused when I am in the first wave of players, which never really happen in CoV or CoH...to be among the first few to do or attain something...well, there is some additional appeal there...yet...with Heroes of Might and Magic V...look like it won't be their doing this time that I don't experience it at release (still angry at CoV lousy release hehe).  Yeah I know to all folks...Heroes is available online...yet, I don't want to play on free-pirate stuff, I go the lawful way for games, especially those I looove in the past.  And so far the reviews are good, comparing it to the III, not to the IV, which is definitely a good point!  It is ironic that they give Heroes 1,2 & 3 freely with this new game...and not the 4, I know that they do that in the hope to sell more IV, but seeing that trash removed from the list only put a smile on my face...1,2,3 and 5!  4 just doesn't exist anymore!  *grin evilly*

I had finally made the jump to CoV(probably because of no new issues during that time) and was pleased with the graphics and some of the new ATs. Now having played CoV for a couple months, I do not feel that same happiness for an Issue as I used too. That feeling has steadily been diminishing since Issue 4. Bases did not add much for me so any new features added for them does nothing for me. Having played this game off and on for past couple years, I have seen SGs come and go, so the Prestige factor negates any enjoyment before I can even experience the bases. I want Issue 7 to revive something but I just don't see it after going to the test server and reading the comments in the forums.

I didn't realize it has been almost 7 months since the last issue, but that could account to why I only log in for about 20 minutes or less, then do something else. No, Issue 7 does not excite me.

And I am also looking forward to Heroes of M&M 5. I've wasted too many hours on those games and look forward to doing it again. :) Not to mention, I've yet to take the Oblivion plunge(still debating whether to experience on my mid-range vid card or wait til I've saved up for a high-range one) as that is another of my favorite series.

The only reason I've hung on so long is because I love super-heroes and CoX is the only game in town. The shine has increasingly dulled over time especially compared to all the other sparkly releases over the past few months and in the near future.

I think its time for a break until Issue 8 or the retail expansion in 2007 when possibly some real content will make it into the game.

I agree that I6 to I7 has been a horribly long time... many of my friends and SG members disappeared about 3 months in and will hopefully come back for I7.  To be fair to Cryptic, though, they might go back to their quicker, smaller releases after I7.  I sure hope so.  I want wings.  Now!
