You are fine leveling to 80 in pve / pvp. You can do the easier stuff at 80 without subbing fine. However at 80, to compete effectively in high end pve or pvp you will need to sub to be effective. AAs make a lot of difference. The game is a lot of fun for me. You will know how much you like the game well before 80.

AoC F2P is just extended trial if u want to do engdame dungeons/raids/pvp u need sub.

Btw Aoc is also most expensive MMO out there.

They charge sub + expnasion price (that u cant acces when your sub runs out even if u bought it) + cash shop + new DLC ( Turan content) and new DLC is coming.

BTW it is good game but my PC is having hard time with it since 2008 game perfomance is constantly dropping :( It worked better back in 2009 than it does now.

Nah it's 80 before you need the expansion to use the AA's, they can't be used until then. The normal trees can be accessed fine.

For a casual player AoC's F2P is ideal but as mentioned before it really needs a sub+RotGS to get the most out of it once you hit max level.

Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them.

Well one thing is for sure, there's a ton of new players ingame.

many shards/instances or whatever you want to call it in each zone.

as a f2p no matter how much you spend in their item shop, you will never have access to the siege, you will always have half of bag space and bank space..  plus there is a unremovable gold cap of 2g.

basically they are forcing you to stay pure f2p or sub.

the 2 gold limit isn't holding me back, and I've been a f2p player for a few months. In fact, I'm nowhere near 2g. I can't seem to find an active guild to play with. The "guild recruitment" section of these forums are outdated. Half of those are not ingame anymore.  4 classes only and limited bag space are more of a hinderance to me.

Coming from EvE where expansions are released for free, i'm not too thrilled about having to purchase each new expansion, especially if i am subbing to the game already.  As a single player game, this game is great for awhile but wearing me down.

Playing: BF3, Prototype and Skyrim
Hiatus: EvE
Waiting on: World of Darkness(sigh)

You can play up to level cap and not be underpowered at all, at least when compared to any average freshly dinged 80 out there. However, AoC has the alternate advancements (AA) that gives you several advantages and boosts, that you're supposed to level up once you reach the cap, and it's only available if you subscribe. Basically these are the big limits of playing F2P (in my limited experience).

Low bag space. You have 8 bag slots unavailable at all times, which is a lot considering your starting bag is only 16 slots, and inventory space is low in AoC when compared with other MMOs to begin with. However quest items and crafting items go into their own bag so they don't take space in your main inventory. You'll notice this at first, but less so as you level up and get money to buy the bigger bags.

Speaking of money, you're limited to 2g. It's quite a bit of money in AoC terms when compares to other MMOs, though, a basic mount will take you back 1g (25s for the mount, 75 for the training). You won't notice this until you're in the late 40's, early 50 levels, though but it becomes annoying. One way to get around it is to either create your own guild of one (or create it in an alt, you can make a second account for that) and store gold in guild bank that isn't limited. However, that prevents that character to join a guild, or if using a bank alt, you'll need to level him to 20 before you can create a guild. This also limits your ability to buy or make crafted gear at high level since some materials sell for over 2g in the trader (AH). However, if you do play to 80 and then subscribe, you won't really be any poorer than your average 80, any money you earn during your leveling above 2g is added to a hidden "bank" and deposited to you as soon as you subscribe.

Limited bank space. Your bank space is also halved, and unlike other MMOs, there's really no way to add more bank space. A bank alt could help this. Of all limitations, I'd say this is the most annoying, specially since anything you want to sell on the trader (AH) needs to remain in your bank for as long as it's listed.

Only base mounts. You can't get your fast mount when you reach 80 unless you subscribe (or buy in item store). That isn't that different from your average fresh 80, though. Most don't have the money to get one when dinging anyway.

Some dungeons are limited. This can be specially annoying at level 30-40, when the first dungeons open up but they're all premiun only. Stops being an issue as there are several other dungeons (including some that scale depending on your level) get available later. Once you reach level 80, you have a couple dungeons and 2 raids available, the rest are premiun. You can buy permanent access to all pre-80 dungeons on the store, bound to one character (so you'd have to get it again for an alt if you choose to). Once you reach 80, all premiun dungeons and raids are bound to time passes you can buy in item store that let you play them for a few days (IIRC 3 and 7 day passes). However they're not cheap, if you plan on raiding at 80, your best option by far is going premiun.

Your starting classes are limited to 4. You get your basic tank (guardian), melee DPS (barbarian), ranged DPS (demonologist) and healer (priest of mitra). The most interesting classes, though (IMHO) are the restricted ones. You can buy the other classes in the item store, but if you want to create characters using them, I'd suggest go premiun even if it's only for a month, check all the classes you want until you pick the ones you want, and when you go F2P again you'll be able to play 2 of them even if they're the restricted classes.

Phew.. that came out longer than I intended.. :)

The four classes are the real annoyance for f2p. Bear shammies / Heralds are some of the most fun characters to actually play (well once the bear shammy gets past 25). As far as guilds go, most recruit from the AoC boards ( http://forums.ageofconan.com/index.php ) down in the server section.
