He wasn't a household name for his acting, he was a household name due to being Mr. Universe and a successful documentary called "Pumping Iron".

The movie isn't going to help gain subscribers unless Funcom advertises before the movie or on TV to try to tie them together.  At this point letting Conan fans know there's a F2P MMO is in their best interest, but I don't think they'll spend much on getting the word out.

Your arguments that you haven't proven:

a.) Schwarzeneger was well known at the time movie was released. And as you claim his fame came from being world champion in heavy lifting? You back this up saying you knew him and the people you hanged with knew him as well. Well you might, most people didn't. 

Today 1 out of maybe 100 people would know who is the heavy weight champion. 

If you ask people whose interest includes the subject that the documentary portrayed ... it is not a very well constructed argument, since we are arguing about the masses here. Sure, those people know about it, but they are a minority ...

I am a huge movie buff but I have never heard of this documentary? Why? Because it is off a subject that does not interest me at all. I am willing to bet that out of 100 random people maybe 2 will know this documentary

 

b.)  You claim that Conan was a huge hit and that it is a good movie. yet:

-it is rated 6.8 on IMDB

-it has not win a single oscar

IMBD box office all time sale. There is terminator, there is rocky, there is rambo ... all the greatest hits from that time. But Conan is not listed. Apocalypse now is not listed.

Why? Because these are cult movies, appreciated by movie enthusiasts but never made a colossal boom in public. I rest my case.

Arnold was famous in the USA when the first Conan was released.  A lot of it had to do with Lou Foringo on the Hulk.  It is hard to say why, but people just knew of him.  He wasn´t a famous actor, but people knew the name and knew how big he was and that he beat ´hulk´ in most bodybuilding competitions.

Sorry, but hate to point out that most good movies (as far as memorable) never won an oscar.  I think you are talking about ártistic´ when most of us are talking about movies that had ´normal´ people talking.  Conan had that effect..

Now, after having watched the movie, I'm doubtful that it will do much for the game at all. Ron Pearlman and Jason Momoa were both very good but the movie itself was a bit of a let down.

Not one that will stick in the minds of movie-goers in a positive manner unless all they were expecting was an average fare sword and fantasy movie using funky editing rather than a good script to give the illusion of pace.

If the movie was better, maybe. 

I'm sure Bioware has a wet dream every once in a while where George Lucas says that they've been secretly taping another Star Wars movie and that it's coming out in January 2012.

Really, there hasn't been any cross promotional stuff going on with the game (at least that I've seen). It seems unlikely that this movie will have a significant impact on playerbase. It's just not good enough to get people hyping on the Conan world enough to find Conan in other places.

At the end of one of the interviews with Funcom at one of the conventions this summer there was a comment they were off to do the shooting for the DVD of the Conan movie. No idea what it is there putting on it but I suppose that's something.

If I didnt already play AoC I doubt I would have went out and bought it after watching the movie though, it just doesn't impress.

MOVIE was horrid dont even bother seeing it ugh waste of money. LOved the old conans better 

I loved the movie.  I don't see what was so wrong with it.  I mean, it's nothing like the Arnold POS Conan movies, but it does have the feel of REH Conan.  I think I'm going to see it again.  In 3D.

i LoL'd by this.....movie was a pos nothing was good about it at all...only part i liked was when he was a kid. He didnt fit the role as a barbarian he was horriable. sense when does conan wear shoulder pads? everything was f'd up in that movie. Arnolds movies were 100x better and actually kept me entertained 

I disagree Timmy. I thought he was a good Conan. His use of the sword was not GCI. The guy knows his shit and is a great action hero. The way he rode a horse was very well done. His movements were not clumsy but rather graceful and the fight scenes were very well done. I have preferred a darker style like the watchmen but this Conan will lead the way for more.

I thought the movie was way too heavy on action and very weak in just about everything else. Well, not everything else. I thought Jason did  pretty well as a more panther like and powerful Conan as revealed in the REH stories. I think where this film fell flat was in the directing and writing. Both those are critical to a good movie, and this one came up short on both counts. Really too bad because all the key players did their job with enthuisam and skill. Under more competent directing and script writing it would have been a far better flick. Actors can only do so much with the material they are given.

The movie had no meaningful vision beyond staggering from one bloody encounter after another. You got to have more scope than that, even if the sceens are done well.

I don't see how this will boost AoC in any way. I never saw any reference to the game watching it in the theater. In fact if I hadn't already been a AoC player any connection between this movie and the game would never have crossed my mind.

 Same.  Obviously, Timmy disagrees with Robert E Howard's vision of what Conan is.  I'm sorry, but the only people let down by this movie, are ones who don't know the Conan character, which sadly includes 90% of the fans of the original (Arnold) movie.  And yes, we wore armor of various types, depending on the situation and what he could find, and yes, he sailed the seas.  Very, very true to source. 

Told you this movie was going to suck hard.  When I see previews that make me chuckle when it's not supposed to, that's a hint and a half a major fail is incoming.

Think its will boost it a bit but in general i doubt it will be much or they need to include some kind of flyer or whatever when you buy a dvd from it . Dont think they will do it since they have nothing to do with the movie outside that its the same ip.

From what I've read it is a violent standard action flick, but from my knowledge of the books, this is moderately true to the source, why anyone would go in expecting deep revelations from a Canon mvoie is beyond me, but the main critique I've heard is shallow characters...

New film doesnt even come close to capturing anything from RE Howards Conan.

Maybe the action, but thats it.

I'm sorry but, for me at least, this new movie felt far from Robert E. Howards vision and mood of the Conan stories. Yes it had barbarians and all the technicalities were there . Momoa was good I thought..but everything else was lacking. It wasn't terrible. Keep Momoa for the sequels but get a Director and some scriptwriters that can better adapt Howard's stories. Jason Momoa will be a hundred times better with a decent script/story. The man should be a star between this franchise and his ..mostly silent..but good job on 'Game of Thrones". I'm surprised I'm saying this because I never really cared for him on "Stargate Atlantis". Guess it was his character or the show. idk.

 I doubt it will do anything either way though, but if anything people going into AoC directly from the movie and with no past knowledge will likely be pretty disapointed. No harm to foul there though since you're just losing someone who wasn't playing to begin with.
