I think with anything that gets any kind of attention will see an increase. So I would have to say yes older players who have not played for awhile or maybe even new players will prob sub when the movie comes out.

It will depend on the marketing they put into the movie and the game.

Kinda have the feeling the movie wont boost AoC player base but if they are smart and release it on blueray or dvd that comes with 14/30 day key it might boost the game.

That's a really good idea. The theatrical release should also have a trailer or something before the movie starts. 

The poll should have a "maybe" option.  There was talk out of Funcom of coordinating marketing with the film.  This could be a trailer or a little handout with a f2p code or something else.  Ultimately, I think any boost will be dependent on how well the movie is received by audiences. 

IMO not that much depends on advertising in movie. I think the biggest factor of boost will depend on how sucessful the movie is. 

I think "Conan the Barbarian" (1982) is not a very well known film. (maybe because it is a film? :) )Sure, it is a cult film but as such it is only known to movie enthusiasts. The IP was never introduced to the masses. 

While "Conan the Barbarian" (2011) is a movie. If it is made right it will be a blockbuster. And everybody will want to be The conan. So masses will try AoC - same as with SWTOR and Lotro, speccialy LOTRO is known to have a substantial base of LOTRO fans that never played MMO before it.

And I mean no on a long term basis. Fact is AoC is a potentially great game made mediocre by the joke of an MMO company that develops it. Sure, some Conan fans will probably get fired up by the movie, check out the game, but then imagine it...

...they love Tortage (as we all did the first time) and then they get out into the world and the mediocrity starts and when it comes to reaching for the credit card will they actually do it? I think the film fans will probably drop out at this point.

Now don't get me wrong, I am a Howard/Conan fan and I played the game from lauch and for quite a time subsequently and I am sorely disappointed that it didn't turn out to be the awesome game I thought it could be. So I'm not bashing AoC here, I am criticising the lack of ability I see at Funcom to make it what it could and should be and I reckon any new players will see it too, after a time.

I seriously think that it's the other way around. Everyone who has tried/played the game will certainly feel an interest to see the film.

I believe that that number could be between 1.500.000 to 2.000.000. Add all the Conan lovers that do not play pc games and all the fantasy movie lovers you got a huge number there....So the tickets will get a serious boost...

The film by itself does not show anything biggie...Won't affect people in a way to make them go play an online game....at least not the same way the opposite way

F2P is the model of the future. It is a way to make more money.

I believe short term it could boost the player base, after a few months they will leave.   I just don't see folks staying long term in this game with so many other good games coming out. And i fyour like me your going to skip the conan remake, as I just don't like the actor.

I think it will bring some new players in.  If Funcom advertises at all in connection with the movie, it might even bring some people completely new to MMOs in.  How many will stay around and spend money might be a different story. 

One more thing, though, since the game went unrated, would advertising it in the US be tricky, or is that just box sales in stores?

Hard to say. 

I know I picked up the Conan paperback and while there are place names in it that we'd recognize, they'll mean nothing to any new potential players.

I was surprised that in the back there wasn't an ad for the game, just the original REH stories.  I'm actually thinking the movie types won't be coordinating with F/C.  F/C's best bet would be to hype the game seperate from the movie once it comes out.

Hopefully, the f2p option coupled with hopefully a good Conan movie makes AoC more successful. I have been having fun on Deathwish in the lowbie brackets. 

It won't hurt, and if the movie is a popular hit it will raise  interest in the Conan IP. I think the movie will bring in more players, at least to check it out. After all it is FtP now so there would be nothing for an interested PC gamer to risk. After seeing the movie and being pumped over Conan there are only two good options for getting more Conan action, read Howard's stories or play AoC.

 wow. Really? (not being sarcastic).....Just about everyone I know (nerd or not and spanning different ages) has seen the Conan Film from the 80's. Maybe they don't know Robert Howard created Conan but they know Swarzenegger played him in a film they watched. I was there when it originally released and the theatres were jammed packed and sold out....for just about every show that weekend. Granted they didnt show the same film in 8 theatres of the multiplex back then..lol. I think more people are familiar with the character/film than you realize.

That being said.....if the hype machine is fine tuned and this new movie (and I agree with the "film" / "movie" distinction) is decent...then people might stumble into AoC if they are already inclined to play MMOs. Like others have said a smart marketing connection between the two can only help.

I think it will get them more unlimited trial players (F2P), but I don't know how many of those will actually let the Visa sing its song.

The game is still remarkably similar to RotGS release, which is quite astounding seeing how long ago that was. It's truly ironic how the only thing FC seems to have going for them is the new B&G server set, which is PvP intensive, seeing how they've themselves ignored the whole part of PvP for so long.

I think the B&G servers will start fading soon as people hit 80 and realize they just don't want to re-grind every single thing.

No, because the movie is going to suck hard.  They'd be better off doing a tie-in to the 1982 movie.  At least it had one of the most epic soundtracks in movie history.
