I've recently started playing AoC again as a free player, but I was wondering what the better deal is...

With a "free" account once I buy everything I want, I never really have to pay another dime. But this could possibly add up to hundreds of dollars depending on how much I want, but it could also only be a few months subs worth.

On the flip side, if I sub I get access to everything but will have to continually pay which could also add up depending on how long I want to play.

Which is the better deal?

*Assuming you are starting from scratch and don't have old characters*

Unless you are dead set on playing one of the characters not allowed by the f2p you should level to 80 as a f2p player.

Once there and if you really like the game it is essentially mandatory for you to become a sub player if you wish to play after that.

I should mention that unless they have altered how their content purchases work for f2p you will be renting much of the available content at end game.

You are also cut off from AA leveling which plays a massive part in your PVP effectiveness and also in your high end Khitai PVE and highest raid tier capability.

It is a very generous system in terms of content from 1-80 f2p (you don't have to spend anything and still comfortably level to cap, missing some optional dungeons on the way)  but if you wish to progress at end game a sub will be necessary.

I don't PvP in AoC, and I don't like raiding so I guess I might as well stay F2P.

But you can't even purchase the AA feature as F2P? That's kinda lame.

It sounds like F2P will be perfect for you.

They list that there are items that enable AA point gains for sale in the shop, but I'm not sure if it's a permanent toggle or a time limit type potion. (as much of their store is set up, Ie. dungeon access in the store is on a timer)

The AA leveling is a pretty epic grind (apparently there are more viable ways of earning a lot of points in shorter times, but it's still pretty daunting so paying for a bit of time would not be financially viable)

In short their item shop is set up more to goad you towards being a subscriber than say a Lotro where both subbing or buying what you use are viable.

I guess I'll just live without AA.

Although I didn't know how their F2P dungeon access worked, but I don't really run many dungeons wither so I guess I could just pay if I ever feel like doing one.

I think I should be able to make a one time payment for dungeon access but I guess it's like you said, they want to push people into subbing.

Anyways thanks for the replies.

I'm pretty much just playing this til TOR or TSW comes out so I'll get whatever I can out of it for free.

The way it is set up really will serve you well. The AA's really aren't that important for what you have in mind, and it is probably the most content heavy F2P game on the market for the purely free player.

It was my first MMO and I always find myself going back to it for a couple months here and there.

I hope you enjoy it :)
