Okay, last year, Lord of the Rings Online definitely pushed the line on how good an mmo can look. The graphics were and are superb. The game runs very smoothly and also offers a big range of compatibility to older computers.

But LoTRO, from the looks of it, had nowhere near this much success prior to launch day.

So then what is the difference?

In my opinion, the graphic violence (chopping off heads, and spraying blood) and the strong sexual content of the game are two big keys here to the sales figures here for this game.

Sure, the ability to participate in siege warfare is a nice feature.

Sure, the graphics look beautiful.

But also, the game looks to demand much more of a high end computer just to play it smoothly which is a huge negative.

I honestly think people wanna see blood in their games of this nature. WoW and LoTRO certainly don't deliver the graphic and bloody content that AoC promises in its videos.

And we all know how much sex sells. That's a no brainer.

So that's my question and my focus of discussion in this thread...

Are Sex and Graphic Violence the main reasons that Age of Conan has had so many pre-orders and likely had much better then expected success at this stage of the game? Why or why not?

I enjoy Conan lore and the combat system more than any other ATM.

Not a huge negative to people who have a computer that can easily handle its demands, no. But it would "seem" to be a big negative as far as sales are concerned. Think of how many people will check it's minimum requirements out in the retail stores, and put it back thinking "damn, maybe next year if I get a better computer" heh.

I firmly believe that if Funcom did not introduce nudity and excessive gore, they wouldn't have half of the playerbase they now have. Of course this is just my opinion, and to quote the Human Torch "Flame on!"

of course its not.  its basically people are so desperate for a decent MMO after they quit their old ones for whatever reason that any MMO with decent advertising (WAR, AoC) is gonna suck them in.  sure sex sells in RL but it hardly sells in this industry, you can get it for free off the net at any rate

in both the pvp beta and the open beta there was alot of, "OMG WHEREZ MY NIPPLEZZ" so i'm sure it has something to do with it.

also i would say that the combat system has alot to do with it. for me at least that is the draw and a faster pace battle.

There is plenty of graphics violence in AoC. There is no sex however, just top nudity.

From my point of view, I believe that people are more thirsty for something new now, than they've been some years ago. It will probably become more apparent when WAR is about to get released. AoC is kind of a wildcard. Too many good things and inovations from other games combined in a common roof but also too many chances of a failure, exactly due to that.

For the sake of the health of the gender, I hope if does well what has promised to be doing.

its the hype, media, I didnt really follow but didnt this game gone gold a while ago or something.

Going gold in software development is not the same as with the musical industry. In software development it just means that a master disc has been created and was delivered for mass reproduction, usually a few days (or weeks) prior to the official release.

Sex and violence is a cornerstone of the advertising industry and a staple of popular entertainment.

Is this poll meant to start yet another negative flamewar in an attempt to damage AoC by suggesting thats all it offers?

A blind moron can see this game dosent rely on sex and violence as it's content and that it's just window dressing.

Yes Sex sells and has for a long time, Also the combat system is different enough for those who think they have fps pwnin skills to just in with both feet. The fatalities and decapitation are also huge draws.

In the past mmorgps have been fairly bland in these aspects. The majority of the AOC Fan boys have themselves convinced this is the second coming in terms of games.

So in conclusion

Yes Sex and Violence in Video Games sell. Just look at the GTA series and it was the logical thing for this to transition into MMORPGs. Unfortunately the M rating won't keep lil Billy No friends from ruining everyones experience. I know 18 is old enough to play a Mature game. But IMO most 18yrs need as ass whopping cause the generation of 18yrs out there now are from the Parents that don't spank their kids.

So they don't have any respect for anyone. Thus they are legally consider mature but very immature socially.
