In Age of Conan, Poitain is the zone where you can find the most abundant supply of resources and build Guild Keeps. Wild cattle, bulls, pigs, and dogs wander the countryside for your hunting needs; their skins are a key resource for Armor crafting. When gathering materials of lumber, cotton, metals, and minerals, you must be prepared to watch your back; occasionally, several NPCs will spawn to keep you from gathering the resources. These claim jumpers, farmers, druids, and miners typically spawn around the player's level that is doing the gathering. Poitain is also your best place to find trainers for artisans, craftsmen, and gatherers.
"...the tall rich grass waved upon the plains where grazed the horses and cattle for which Poitain was famed. Palm trees and orange groves smiled in the sun, and the gorgeous purple and gold and crimson towers of castles and cities reflected the golden light. It was a land of warmth and plenty, of beautiful men and ferocious warriors."
The Hour of the Dragon, by Robert E. Howard (1935)
The same coachman that provided your transport to Poitain can also take you to the Wild Lands of Zelata. This countryside is named after a witch, who at one time had advised Conan. Zelata now lives in the southern mountains; she has clues to your condition and may be able to offer you assistance. The settlers see her as the source of their troubles. It is up to you to discover the truth? Your coach will drop you off in Tesso where you will quickly learn that dark forces have run the residents out of many of the neighboring villages. The Wild Lands are the easternmost frontier of Aquilonia where bold men attempt to tame the wilderness and bandits or worse prey on the weak; these villains frequently clash with Aquilonia's forces. As you work to uncover the mysteries of these rolling hills, you will run into advance forces of the Nemedians along the southeastern border who recently tried to depose King Conan. Dark Beasts, corrupted by sorcery most foul, now prowl freely through this region driving all the surviving settlers back to Tesso. Perched in the mountains to the east is the Sanctum of Burning Souls; scouts have been lost in this area and few men return without stories of abominations that harried their exploration.
"The going grew rougher, the scenery more rugged, steep grassy slopes pitching up to densely timbered mountainsides.
Without a word she led the way, the great wolf trotting at her side, the eagle soaring above her. Through deep thickets and along tortuous ledges poised over deep ravines she led him, and finally along a narrow precipice-edged path to a curious dwelling of stone, half hut, half cavern, beneath a cliff hidden among the gorges and crags. The eagle flew to the pinnacle of this cliff, and perched there like a motionless sentinel."
The Hour of the Dragon, by Robert E. Howard (1935)
From the south gate of Tarantia, and a short trip further south along the road, you can take another coach to the cold mountains of Cimmeria and Conarch Village to continue your adventures; Conarch Village is the home of Conan's Clan. Otherwise, the docks offer passage on waiting ships to return you to tropical Tortage or the demon-haunted dunes and deserts of Stygia, a nation a secrets, lies, and dark magics, heir to the evils of ancient Acheron.
