"Have fun storming the castle!"

I like the ideas behind the game but the graphics are soo dated. Like Horizons for me

While the textures and particle effects are dated, I still think the style of the game is a nice change from the norm. And of course, the game play MORE than makes up for the graphics in every way.
This is just one of those situations where you have to ask yourself what's more important, "flashy, make-your-computer-explode, graphics." or "dated graphics with game play that dwarfs any of the competition for the last 8+ years."
Of course, I'm biased so I'd go with the latter, hands down :).
Monthly events keep even the longest playing veterans with new things to do, and the random loot generated system (one of my favorite things about the game) which makes hunting much more exciting since there's always a chance of finding something new and improved.
Also, if pvp is your thing, the game features some of the most involved, skill-based combat from any game that I've personally played - and that's a lot. Since spells and other attacks can be dodged (unlike most mmo's) it requires a more perceptive eye, which really adds to the realism.
Anyway, I'm actually a fairly new player myself so I'm not really able to go into much more detail about the game, but I can tell you this: I've played close to 100 different mmorpgs, and I've always looked for a game that had all of those little things that made me want to stick around. Alas, every game I played left me feeling like something was missing. A tight-knit community? - Perhaps; an interesting character customization system? - Almost always haha; or maybe you'd like to find a game that had player housing that wasn't instance? - You bet I would :).

Well, after all the searching and grinding from game to game to game, I finally came across AC. I must admit, when I first saw screenshots for it I was a bit set back, but then again, I grew up on EQ so I was used to the old school look. So, although I didn't think I'd care for it (since I had never really heard much about it) I decided to give the trial a shot, and well, that was around 3 months ago ^_^. I haven't really had much time for playing lately, due to RL issues, but that's the beauty of AC - it doesn't require a huge time sink to play it. You can play when you want for as long as you want. Grouping isn't something that's required by most builds in the game, and if grouping is something you'd like to do, just join an active allegiance and you'll more than likely have plenty of nice people to help you get started. The community in AC (at least on pve servers) shines like no other.

Anyway, I hope this information helps you or anyone else who might be considering AC. I certainly don't regret my decision for a second and I only wish I had tried it many, many years earlier.

Just give the 14 trial a go, find a nice, active allegiance (For servers, Frostfell is the most active pve server, and Darktide is the one FFA pvp server of the game if that's your thing, but it's very cut-throat and most of the people are rude to newcomers) and just try to enjoy the depth and lore of the game.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

(Oh, and btw, I suggest picking Frostfell as your starting server. It's the most populated pve server and it has an excellent community. There's also quite a few people who pvp as well, towards the higher levels so you'll still be able to have some pvp once in awhile if your so inclined. DT (the pvp server) is something I'd recommend waiting until you're familiar with the game to play. And keep in mind, it has a much different and arguably worse community on it. Of course, it all comes down to what you like.)

"Have fun storming the castle!"

Thanks alot for your time and effort put into the post. Really speaks to how much you care for the game to write that much in the defense of it. I am downloading the trial now and will put me graphics reservations aside lol  thanks again.

Anytime :). It might take you some time to really get into the game but once you learn the ropes, it's a blast. And if a mage character is your cup of tea - even better ;). Mages are a ton of fun in both pvp and pve. They're arguably the most involved and challenging to play. Plus, with the amount of different spells in the game, it's a lot of fun. Melee's are great too but they get a bit repetitve at times. I say give em both a try for good measure.

I also recommend that once you get in-game, you ask in the general chat if someone would be willing to take you in as a vassal. There are many friendly people in the game that are usually more than willing to help a new player. Just let them know about your situation and I'm sure you'll be part of a great allegiance in no time.

Good luck and have fun :).

Well, every class is important and each has it's strength and weakness but mages are just a heck of a lot more fun imo. Also, they're much more survivable, so if you plan to solo a bit I'd say they would be the best choice.

You should search "Asheron's call" on youtube and watch some vids of the different builds in action. The mage was always the most entertaining to watch for me, atleast when it comes to pvp.

Sorry I haven't played AC for about 3-4 years now and I have being considering comming back, however I saw your post here and had to correct you on one thing.  The real beauty about AC is there are NO classes, your character is your own creation from the very begining.  YOU choose the skills, YOU decide what your attributes are, YOU choose where to put your XP to properly fit your build.  In the end like I was you could be a Specialized Sword/Melee D, with Creature and Item magic.  Or you could be the guy that can practically jump over houses, with a Specialized jump skill....either way the only correction I wanted to give  you that alot of people miss is that your characater in AC was your own design.  Sure people followed guides after they were created but in the end everyone could make different choices.  Heck I remember my old Guild Leader "Super Beast" was the only character I knew of that was in his later 100s level wise but had NO magic at all.  He was amazing at PVP and he lead full raids and quests for us with that character.  Nothing like watchin him buff up, he would put on his armor and jewlery and poof those were his buffs...LOL   Ahhh the good old days...DAMN IT NOW I want to play again....geeshh.

Have fun with the game and remember your character isn't a set design he/she is your design.

Sorry, I should have used "build" instead of class.

I'm still experiencing side-effects of class based games I guess hehe.

ROTFL, no kidding, awww the freedom of AC, how I miss it, one of the only TRUE Sandbox style games to exist.  It always had something to do, and a different way to experiment...man I miss that game, I think I might reactivate my accounts...LOL
