Scripture is only as ambiguous as our ignorance of it allows it to be.

So I came across this when I was browsing the Hero's Journey Council Forums:

As a third avenue of loot diversity, Simu has opted for the idea that your weapons and armor should grow as you do, and so has crafted a system that will allow your weapons and armor level up as you do. You can make your armor lighter, more resistant to damage, more durable, change it's appearance (I am led to believe), or a number of other things. Also, your weapon can be made to have other benefits: hit harder, swing faster, and upgrading them can even unlock new abilities for you to use!

This was in response to a post of mine I made about the loot system. The underlined portion of the text is what I had suggested several months previously. Originally, I suggested that guilds in this game be able to craft 'guild armor' which would level up in its effectiveness as your level increased as well. This would act as an incentive to wear the guild armor because I believed that guilds of players should look somewhat uniform in their dress - like soldiers of a particular kingdom. It looks like they may've picked up on this part of my idea. I wonder if they went any further...

We've known about this for a long time, actually. I believe they have an article up here on MMO from last year where they talk about how everything is upgraded. Could be in the IGN stuff, I don't remember.

But I do like it. You find that sweet look, and you can keep it while still making it better. Then if you find a better one, you can switch all your enhancements to the new one without losing any of your nice benefits.

Yeah. Maybe we just happened to have the same ideas at the same time. I was talking to one of the community relations people on the Council forums about this several months back, and he basically told me that I thought the same way as 'them' on the issue I brought up about guild armor. Items leveling up is an interesting idea, but as to how their implementing it I'll have to read up more on it.

Granted, we have discussed the improvements to equipment, but this suggestion goes a bit futher.  At any rate, there are two issues here that are of interest.  One is the crafting of the armor and the other is how it ties into the Guild.  At this point in our development I don't think we can address either of these issues.  This is mostly because we don't plan to release any details on crafting at this time.  However, the idea of crafting some form of Guild specific armor is certainly one to keep in mind.

I think it would also be great if the players had the option to adjust the "look" of their own equipment.  For example, put your Guild colors/symbol on existing equipment.  I know, this is a fairly obvious idea, but not all games offer such options yet.  I would expect most players would prefer to simply adjust the look of their own gear, and make it easy to change back.  For example, wear a tabbard over the  armor temporarily during some Guild event.  Take off the tabbard afterwards.  On the other hand, if a Guild brings in a lot of new -- low level starting -- players, I could see those players making use of Guild crafted armor until they found something else they prefer using.

On the third hand . . . if our system does make it easy to "grow/improve your equipment", you could say that Guild crafted armor might just be flexible enough to keep the new player happily using it for years to come as it grows/improves right along with them.  Of course to what extent that will happen just depends on how good the armor is and how easy it will be for the player to improve that armor to meet their needs and keep them satisfied and using it.

That being said, yes, we do read and consider what the players post.  Of course I can only speak for what is posted over on the Simutronic's forums, although I know a number of staff do read the posts here and on other message boards.

Thank you for your input.

I have been posting this idea for years on the boards of a dozen games. And it's not original to me. People have been wanting this since the first player in the first mmo got an item they liked and did not want to part with.

If HJ implemented this, it would be great. Of course, there actually has to be a game to implement it in, not just an engine licensing company.

LOL, true enough!

Of course, if there is no Hero's Journey, they wont need people like me and I'd be out of a job!

Simu is not just an engine licensing company.... They've been in the MMO business longer than most through the creation of MUDs. Besides the fact that their games have been text only, they are the most free and open games I have ever played. You could do so much in DR. Heck, you could randomly braid grass or carve a branch into a walking stick, weapon, etc. Very entertaining and fun games.

Currently: Playing EVE Online
Previous: FFXI, Dragonrealms, sad little stint in WOWland.
Awaiting: Fallen Earth, Hero''s Journey, Tabula Rasa, Age of Conan.

MMORPG designs will never be successful while MMORPG designers are unsuccessful.

How about having armor and weapons level, but people don't.  Just like in real life, if you think about it.  You can have bad-ass gear, but without it, your still just a 1st level whelp hiding behind shiny plate armor.

Technically not, actually..  People do build muscle and become better able to defend themselves and do things even without equipment.

I have to admit, when I heard about this design decision I was very excited. In fact it is genius, I cannot believe nobody else thought of it. This is the only way to keep everyone looking unique through the life of the game. I think crafters and players will both love it and it will add a lot to the diversity of the game world.

I think instead of having just one type of armor for ur guild there should be different kinds. depending on what class u are, and ur rank inside the guild so that when u pass by someone ur armor (the color or a glow or something about it) will be like HEY HE IS CAPTAIN RANK. just a idea it would be pretty cool.

I think this idea cames from a MMO which was cancelled...Ultima 2 or whatever his name was.

Listening is a double edge sword...if you listen to the wrong peoples, then you get the wrong features in.  This feature is good IMO, but displaying that devs listen or not is not necessarily good per say...

After all...SoE was listening to FoH and AL for soe long...and we all know what changes they manage to get in...
