I really wish you would stop making these videos. I hate to be so negative, but so far in both LOTRO and now DDO you seem to miss the point of what makes these games unique. In DDO it is all about coperative PVE in instanced dungeons.  Something you clearly didnt try in your first few hours of play or whatever. Perhaps if you at least spend a day playing these games THEN going back and making a video it wouldnt seem like you were completely talking out of your ...well.... whatever =/

Well the combat system is wht has kept me playing so long, and if it wasn't for that and the community, I would have left long ago. The game is stale, old, and 'dumbed down' too much at this date to 'grab' me if I was to happen by it for the first time today.

And each update just pushes it further away from what makes it unique.

Anyways, glad you enjoyed your time, hope u give it a month or so and see what makes it unique(Even now).

Shouldn't a solid amount of time be invested in a game before offering it up for review? Running the tutorial and giving us the *basic rundown of the game* serves no purpose other than to show basic functionality, not the true meaning or uniqueness of the game and what it really has to offer.

Unfortunately the *basic rundown of the game* is not actually what the game is about nor are some of those ideas you discussed even true.

Example: Elves are not faster.

Just my curious comments.

@Asketes It's not a review of the game, it's a basic 1st impressions video, showing basic gameplay footage with some generic info on features etc.

As for your words on elves not being faster, everything is coming from the DDO website m8, I'm just trying to show new players or people who are interested in the game some really basic gameplay and some features they might encounter when they first enter the game. So what's wrong with that?

@AtmaDarkwolv, thank you for your kind words, I'll actually be playing DDO more because I really enjoyed it, and maybe down the road make some more videos.

All the best,

Ripper X

Nothing has changed in the combat that I have noticed.  Can someone tell me what exactly was changes in the combat system as opposed to a few months ago?  Did I miss something?

@redrip

I saw the "Our Rating" and all that. It is highly unfortunate the DDO website is misinformed (maybe even situationally ironic?).

I see a lot of people giving to-do videos based solely on the tutorial. I always thought it would be so much greater to spend a few hours and then make your intro video. You'll see a little bit of the game for yourself and have something more to offer to your audience; much more so than every other youtuber with a videocamera.

Make sense? Show them how you obliterate kobolds in Waterworks or Hobgoblins in the STK chain. You could still condense it down to a 5-7 minute video, but you would be able to really talk about the game from slightly stronger point of view.

Reading my previous post, I apologize as I came off as a bit of a jerk, wasn't the intention.

DDO is a great game up to the point you have to deal a person at Turbine.  The game is nice, and different, the service is attrocious and rude.

After a while it sounded like Sean Connery on a radio station was telling me how to play/see DDO.  Informative to a basic standard but this seems to be a series to jump people into the game that never played it not educate them with a novel.  Well done just pump up your volume a bit next time a little too low.

Yes, the combat is ddo IS the selling attribute of the game, it always was, and (if its not changed more) it always will be.

The issue is that from a 'first step' point of view, someone whos taking what the official site gives, and 'playing' from that, will have a skewed and often, misleading impression of what the game is.

This is why i suggest u give it a month or so, fully f2p, since even f2p will get to 'experience' what the game 'IS' and have a better grasp of 'what to do'

After that, if it still has you(which it prob will, ddo is still that 'one unique' game out there) spend some time on the /advice channel and/or on forums to know where to go, what to do, what NOT to do, etc ;D

Like i said, this is the opinion of someone whos played the game a long time, is getting bored of it, but I can still see why I'm still here. As 'bad' as the game is getting now(with the power creep, changes that were not needed or wanted, etc) it's STILL the best choice out there.(And ive played a LOT of games.)

Heya :)  Glad to see that you enjoyed the little bit that you experienced. Funny watching you move around that space - I think that represented about 15 to 30mins of game playing time from what I could see. Interesting to hear from you as this was my first MMO (1.5 years ago and barely able to manage WASD) and you have played many, many, many MMOs... Hope you have time to see more of DDO to get more than just a first impression.

And I will make a point of looking at what other MMOs you report on :P

The cooperative gameplay is definately nice, but cooperative gameplay is not unique xD

Especially not to MMOs....

What makes this game unique is the fact that it provides amazing combat without being some kind of arena game.

One thing about the game is you don't really get a good look at it until you leave the noob area, Korthos Island. That island is good for getting your feet wet and getting some initial gear, but it isn't until you start tromping around Stormreach where you really start hitting the better quests and loot.  You can also do crafting, which has been evolving over time. There is the basic crafting where you could add minor boosts to items, but now there's a Beta system that is going to allow you a lot more flexibility in creating custom items.

Another thing not mentoned is that some races and classes and quest packs need to be unlocked by spending Turbine Points (TP). You can buy those with real cash or farm favor to get free TP.farming favor can be time-consuming though.  That being said, there is some good free content and quests out there. While premimum content is constantly being added, they have been occasionally adding more free content.

Turbine has found a very nice balance between free play and pay-to-play options. There is enough free content to keep the game interesting and the premimum content is nice. A cool option for players is that the premimum members can buy quest passes to allow a friend without that adventure pack to be able to play that content for a while. Also some things are unlocked when your reach certain overall favor levels. For instance, Drow are one of the first things that can be unlocked with total favor.

This is my first MMO and I do plan on playing it for quite a while. I have invensted money into it buying content as I go. While you can get a subscription that unlocks all the content while active, the pay as you go option has the advantage of once bought, its unlocked forever. Though the subscription option (VIP Account) does allow you to get into new quest packs a bit earlier then the Premimum or Free-to-play players.

Oh one more thing, If you already have a Lord of the Rings account or Just a DDO account, you can contact Turbine to get a key so you can create an account for the other game and have those accounts linked.

Why would you do this? Well, if you have a premimum account one one game, then with linked accounts, you get listed has having a premimum account on both games. This gives you a few plusses such as having an additional character slot and some limits removed. You get this even is you only spend cash on one game and not the other.

I think a review of DDO should include noting how broken the game is and how regularly the code breaks.  At the present time two key parts of the game are broken as a result of the last game update.

First, greensteel crafting -- which is the top level of crafting for most players -- is broken.  This crafting system has been in place since June 2008 but broke with the latest update.  It took almost a week before Turbine acknowledged the code was broken and it has been nearly 2 weeks since then with no fix in sight.

Second, the new beta crafting system is broken for handwraps.  Now, we could give some slack regarding a beta system but there is evidence (posted on Turbine's DDO forums) that handwraps have not crafted correctly for at least a year.

Before giving your game recommendation -- and especially before giving an 8 -- you might want to report on just how routinely Turbine's development staff turns out broken code.

As a long-time DDO player I've never seen an update or new module release that was not broken in some way.
