No, you are correct. Gamers should know what "going gold" means by now, in reference to games. /facepalm

From the way I have seen the term used before it seemed to be in reference to the game being released. I wasn't aware of a defintion. Only context clues. Forgive me.

The term is rather vague but refers to the practive of having to release the game for replication.

Almost all media are finished when they are shipped to the reproduction company. Wether that is LP's (where I think the term originated) or movies.

Oddly enough, games nowadays don't have to be finished, as they can be patched.

From what I've read, it will be huge : ). White Dragon in Harbor, Warforged Titans walking the streets, Raid Bosses fighting against each other, etc.

The announcement:

End of Beta Party! Monday, August 17th 7:00 PM – 12:00 AM Eastern!
We’d like to thank our Beta testers for their participation in the DDO Unlimited Beta on Lamannia! Beta has come to an end and the world will be brought down until after launch, but this is
only the beginning of the fun in DDO! We’re not going to let Lamannia go quietly into the night … we’re throwing a party on Lamannia for our beta testers!

* Have you ever wanted to have a drink with a Beholder at the bar?
* Ever wondered if the White Dragon likes to take a bath in the harbor?
* Who would win in a fight: the Pit Fiend, the Maralith, or you?
* How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tasty ham?
* What does Warforged Titan Rockem-sockem in the streets look like?
* Just what crazy XP boost will the devs set on Lamannia tonight?
* How many monsters can we spawn before the server starts to cry?

Find out all these things and more at our End of Beta Party on Lamannia Monday August 17th from 7:00 PM to at least 12:00 AM Eastern (-4 GMT)!

Join us as we cause havoc on Lamannia and shut the server down in style with all sorts of wacky antics. Be there to say goodbye to Lamannia until the next update is ready for preview after launch. This will be your last chance to spend your beta Turbine Points before the store is cleared, so come try out every hair dye color or try to spell your name in ethereal rest shrines. The Turbine team will be there to celebrate our leap forward to launch DDO Unlimited in September.

See you on Lamannia!

Actually you are all wrong, going gold for a game means exactly this.

Going Gold: A game that reached it's sales quota by selling a certain amount of copies either in pre-order if the game has not released yet or actual in-store sales after release.

It can also be based on players that have current accounts which in DDO:EU is the case since it's free to begin with and they are basing Gold status on the current amount of beta testers in it now.

I believe it actually refers to when CDs first came out the master copies were gold.

Your reference to gold is in relation to copies sold gold/platinum, etc. Two different things.

Guys, read the official announcment about this

"DDO Unlimited Goes Gold!"

"Hi Everyone-

What a summer it’s been! Everyone here on the DDO team has been working like crazy to get DDO: Eberron Unlimited ready for launch. Today, we are pleased to announce that DDO Unlimited has "gone gold,” meaning that we are locked in with final release versions of all components!

For the last several weeks, we have been rigorously testing all parts of the DDO service. We did everything possible to hit our original August launch date, but unfortunately we found that some added software tuning and additional hardware was needed to hit our launch targets at our desired quality levels. Last night we hit a major milestone as we passed our launch readiness test on all game and service components!

With that news, we are ready to announce that the game is ready for launch and we are coming to the end of our beta for DDO Unlimited. The last day of beta will be next Monday 8/17.

We would like to express our huge appreciation to our beta community for helping us get DDO Unlimited ready for our launch! We couldn’t have done it without you! We will do a final event on Monday night to let us have one last celebration before we go dark for a bit. As an added thank you, we will also be setting a 100% xp boost on Lamannia from now until the end of Beta.

Our team has already been working hard to get the live servers ready for launch. Over the last 2 weeks we have successfully upgraded all of the game and database servers on the current worlds to handle expected increases in load. Hopefully, if you’ve been playing on live you’ve already noticed the improved performance from this hardware alone. More optimizations are coming in the DDO Unlimited build, so we expect even better performance when we launch!

There are a lot more announcements and launch details still to come in the next few weeks. Please keep checking DDO.com and our forums for more news as it becomes available.

We hope you are as excited about the launch as we are! There are many great things ahead for DDO Unlimited. This is just the beginning.

-Fernando."
