I had a joke in my bio and got accused of selling in game items. Permabanned without so much as an investigation or warning. 1 strike and you are out. If they'd have checked the logs they'd have seen that I've never sent items to other players, only my alts. -Viz |

well, serves you right even if you were joking about it and had it in your bio. I applaud the GM that banned you.

Unless you violated some obscure EULA section, you didn't deserve to be banned. That's not justice.

I agree with the ban. If they allow such a BS excuse, then those who are really doing it will be able to say it is just a joke. This applies to other area of life. Such as joking about a "bomb in a US airport". Or jokingly yelling fire in a movie theatre. |

Originally posted by FreddyNoNose This is nothing like a bomb threat in RL. 1. It's a video game 2. There was no threat implied 3. since I wasn't actually selling items, I didn't break the EULA. No items transferred to any character outside my account. I did nothing wrong except make fun of Turbine's inability to police their game. -viz |

Turbine appears to be one of the companies that's at least trying to take a stand against RMT, and w/o knowing exactly what you had posted in your Bio its hard to say if you deserved it or not.....
But if anyone could have thought that you were trying to sell gold or items from what you said, then you deserved the ban. You don't actually have to sell something before they can ban you...just shouting it in open chat is reason enough......even if its a joke I'm afraid. Hmm while I don't think it's amusing to joke in that way, I don't feel the GM's had enough reason to give a perma-ban. Perhaps a serious warning would have sufficed. Sometimes turbine can get ban-happy.

It's always hard to tell if people who come here crying vengeance for being banned are really telling the truth. I've played countless games and MMO's online and I've only been banned once from anything and that was the NCSoft forums for posting a link to a Hacker site. I even posted along with the link that I was against Hackers and what they do to gaming, but the fact I provided a link to such nefarious activities, I was banned. No warning, banned. Granted, it was just forum access, but the story goes, there is no gray area between right and wrong. So if buying/selling gold is as big of a no no in MMOs as it is. I wouldn't even talk about it in game, even jokingly. If what you say is true, I am sorry you felt the full force of the MMO gaming law, but you probably stepped too far over the line for Turbine to even bother warning. |

Unfortunately, I have to agree: people who don't get involved with this sort of stuff (keep their nose clean, in other words) don't get banned. People to whom "bad things happen," tend to (no surprise) have rather elaborate explanations for why they were innocent of the act of which they are accused. This is nothing like real life, of course....contending you were wrongly accused of drunk driving after serving time, for example or losing your license is a real serious affair, but it's funny how people to whom this happens tend to actually have a problem, that's usually pretty obvious....also funny how people who don't drink never, ever get wrongfully accused. Soooo.....operating from inferred contexts like this, it's hard not to figure that, regardless of what you claim or thought of your bio info, it must have been pretty alarming, such that a ban was in order. Sure, maybe you didn't do anything.....but I can guarantee if you really, absouletly were innocent that this wouldn't have happened. Current MMOs: Rift, Tera, SWTOR, DDO |

How can you get banned and the spammers and gold farmers keep on going, and going, and going. Perhaps you can appeal, but Turbine is very unresponsive to its customer base, so I wouldn't hold my breath.
PS - what did you say?

They are a bit heavy handed, tho. My friend was joking around and said, "My alt is ksajdlkasjdsqlkj and I have tons of plat for sale!" In guild chat, amidst a discussion. I know, I know, out of context that might sound really bad, but he never traded or did such things. He had been in the game since beta. He was saying it amongst 5 close friends, but 1 guy who was new to the guild reported him. If they had checked the logs, which I really feel is important, because people can make up ANYTHING, they'd see it was a joke.
He was banned until like 2028. I've seen people almost get banned for putting, "Tommy the Rogue is a lover with Sammy the Paladin" for 2 minutes. By the time the GM asked him about it, it was not even there. I mean, bad taste, inflammatory, etc, yes, but bannable forever without a warning? I don't think so. People say far more flipped things in groups and public chat. These probably aren't good examples but as I mentioned, they are known for being a bit heavy handed. Reviewing the logs would be a good place to start and then ban accordingly if the person deserves it. Have a winner and don't go on a game over! Does your avatar make you powerful in real life?
