You are new to DDO.
You have some experience with the D&D ruleset and know to research and plan your build. You create your character and start running solo quests to get your feet planted and a feel for the game. The quests are instanced but well-designed and create an immersive atmosphere. You are enjoying it. You enter a difficult quest. You narrowly defeat a small camp of Kobolds in a heated battle. You spring a trap but jump out of the way just in the nick of time. The riddle at the end is engaging and you have it solved within a few minutes. You are excited when the quest rewards you with 300 XP and a +1 weapon. Suddenly you get a party invite. You are now in a party with 5 other players. They all have helmets and glowing weapons. You say hello but get no reply. You enter the instance. Your party members impatiently race through the quest. You do not have time to listen to the DM or even figure out what is going on. You struggle to keep up and get lost a couple times. Your party members finish the quest and, one by one, quickly leave the group. You are bewildered but excited about the 3,000 XP and surprisingly good loot. Motivated and ready for more action, you pick up where you left off on the solo quests. You enter a quest and set to work. But things are different this time. The mobs take too long to kill. A trap incapacitates you as you hurry along. Annoyed, you med in the tavern and return to the instance. The riddle at the end is a nuisance. You finally finish and are presented with a mere 300 XP and a crappy +1 weapon. Unsatisfied, you open the LFG interface and try to find another twinked party to leech. |

You hit the nail on the head with that +1 weapon. I try to play only with my friends, newbs like myself (to the whole mmorpg thing), and like minded players. The game is monotonous and repetitive enough without having to run after people shouting out every trap, secret door, mob, etc, telling you when to do what (heal, shrine, stay back!, etc.).

Oh wow very well written! Too many people on alts make it hard to enjoy the early game. Luckily I play with OTG and real life friends so we can slowly stalk thru the dungeons and enjoy the game for what it is... a hella good dungeon crawl! |
