Posted by Keith Cross on Jan 29, 2009  | 22 comments in our forums

NCsoft has posted the patch notes for Deployment 16, which adds a number of new mechs, and expanded training ground, updated building appearance and more to Tabula Rasa.

D16 was implemented onto the Public Test Server and the following features will be available for your testing pleasures:

  • Added various mechs: AFS Mech, Orson, Angel, Vulcan, and Grendel.
  • Edmund Range Training Grounds has been enlarged, and newly available combat technology has been made available to recruits there.
  • New items have been added to the drop packages
  • All AFS buildings and structures have updated new looks.

Uh,  for a game shutting down in a month they sure are pushing alot of features and additions. I mean its great for the community still playing and all, but isn't it kind of a waste or resources, time and money to invest in something that you are going to simply pull the plug in 30 days?

Just my 2 cents.

Maybe there is a slight hope that they have seen the light at NcSoft HeadQuarters and go F2P and keep the game running.

Maybe the unexpected continuation of Hellgate: London has inspired them lol.

I think there are 80% chance they will turn it to a f2p game + item mall.

This would be an exciting news, and drag more players into the game

Did they do something like this with Auto Assault before they pulled the plug?  I'd certainly agree that this is a very strange thing to do for a game that isn't going to exist at all soon.

They might be planning on relaunching the game with a different business model, or selling it to some other company to run it (e.g., like how Microsoft sold Asheron's Call to Turbine).   Maybe they're just tying up some loose ends on features that were mostly done before they decided to shut down the game, in order to make the game more marketable.

They are probably just adding everything they worked on so far. I would imagine most of the stuff is extremely buggy.

If this game goes F2P it will be the best game out there for your money....

TR really was a great game that just didn't get the love it needed to be stellar.  I enjoyed the combat, the drops and teamplay.  I had a blast until my 30's and realized not to go on any further when it became a grind.  I just wish they didn't make this game level-based as it kept alot of my clanmates seperated from content.  RG did good with UO and the skill based system, it would have been interesting to see what he could have done with it in TR.

i think tabula rasa is another example of the following mmorpg rule.

its not the man that makes a great game.  its the man thats smart enough to hire raph koster that makes a great game.

i think everyone at this point can agree the only great parts of uo were ones that raph influenced.  his original swg design was brilliant as well.

general british just doesnt have him around anymore so he cant take credit for raph's design's and ideas.

if raph had been at destination, tabula would have had a VERY different outcome.

I don't really see the purpose of this either, nor do I understand why so many people still play a game they know is going to shut down.

Every game is eventually going to shut down, so why should anybody play any game?

The answer is, for the enjoyment you get out of it - today.

Ask the people playing Hellgate:London!

Because it's free? I might re-install it myself.

A new content patch with one more month before server shut down?

Either these guys are going to tweak the game to be F2p with a cash shop/ Game ads or they plan to sell this to another company.

If this game goes F2p they will take it down make it more cash shop friendly and relaunch a few months down the road.

TR would be the best F2p on the market if they did that to be honest.

I completely agree. I love this game and would love to see it live on in whatever form, but as you say, if it were F2P with a cash shop...it would utterly dominate. Fantastic observation!

You would think though that if they truly were going to eventually go F2P then they would at least annouce it.  Personally if it was going to stay open and be F2P then I would reinstall tonight.  As it is, even with it being free right now, I can not reinstall it since everything is going bye bye.

Of course if they suddenly say it is F2P and staying open with a cash shop?  Im all over it!    I could not bring myself to pay a  monthly subscription to this after a few months and I got bored.  If it was free though I could definetly see picking this back up.

I think the above poster might be right in that they probably have been working on this content prior to the anouncement that they game was shutting down and are just trying to release everything to players before the game goes down. On the flip side though the sheer amount of stuff they have put out in the last 2 months does give some hope that it may re-emerge after the shut down date as a F2P game with some sort of item buy in system.

Personally I have neer been a huge fan of TR. I played the beta and found that it got boring if I played it for more than an hour at a time. However since the game is now free for at least 1 more month I am going to give it another shot when it finishes downloading in an hour. And to answer one of the other posters questions as to why people play a game that is probably shutting down for good in a month, why the hell not? Its free!

Chances are they are shopping it around to various companies trying to find someone to help set the game up with a F2P model, and in the off chance they do find someone they want the game to have as much as possible to make it somewhat appealing.
